WILMINGTON, Del. – During a year-end address, President-elect Joe Biden warned that country is far from emerging from the coronavirus crisis.“Our darkest days in this battle against COVID are ahead of us, not behind us. So, we need to prepare ourselves and steel our spines,” said Biden in Wilmington on Tuesday. “As frustrating as it is to hear, it’s going to take patience and persistence and determination to beat this virus. He said the bill is a good next step, but more funding will be needed in the coming year.“I have said all along, this bill is just a first step — a down payment — on addressing the crisis we’re in. We have a lot more work to do,” said Biden.Biden also took the chance to express sympathy for the many American families who are struggling financially and emotionally as they celebrate the holidays in isolation amid the global pandemic.“With over 320,000 lives lost to this virus, Jill and I send our prayers to all of you facing this dark winter with an empty seat at the dinner table where your loved one used to sit, talk, and laugh,” said Biden. “Our hearts go out to all of you who have fallen on hard times through no fault of your own, unable to sleep at night, weighed down with the worry of what tomorrow will bring for you and for your family.”Like for Thanksgiving, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is encouraging people to celebrate the end of year holidays at home with the people you live with. Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu.“Like we did over Thanksgiving, we all have to care enough for each other that we have to stay apart just a little longer,” said Biden. “I know it’s hard, but we have a long way to go.”Biden also encouraged Americans to continue taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus as the nation ramps up its vaccination efforts.“We need everyone to mask up, stay socially distant, and avoid large gatherings,” said Biden. “And we need to work in a bipartisan way. That’s the only way we’ll get through this.”Biden himself received his initial dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, shortly after his wife did as well. With Congress debating the next economic relief package, American workers are set to lose additional unemployment money at the end of the week.The crisis has affected all sorts of workers, but one particular group is less likely to be able to recover – the older workforce.AARP found 30% of older workers lost jobs or income because of COVID-19.Research from the Great Recession found it takes older Americans twice as long to get back into the workforce. If they do, they almost always never end up making the money they used to.AARP is also concerned businesses might be reluctant to hire older workers because of the increased risk to the virus.“There’s now five generations for the first time ever in the workforce, so having that diverse age will actually help in bringing products and services to the market that appeal to a wide range of age of people,” said Susan Weinstock, VP of Financial Resilience at AARP.Prior to the pandemic, businesses were looking to recruit older workers because of their unique soft skills: being empathetic, calm under pressure, and a good listener.Multigenerational workforces tend to be more efficient, productive and have fewer errors and absenteeism.“Think about something that happened at work when you are 25 and then when you are 55 and something similar happens you have some perspective you can bring,” said Weinstock.AARP has resources specific for older workers affected by the pandemic, including a jobs board with a lot of remote work for those concerned about going to work in person. 1543
While there are still questions about whether trick-or-treating will happen in 2020 and how neighborhoods will make it possible, there is no question Americans like their Halloween candy.Sales of Halloween candy and chocolate at grocery stores are up 17 percent over 2019 so far this season, according to the National Confectioners Association. Total sales, including online purchases, is up 13 percent year-over-year.The National Confectioners Association, NCA, represents manufacturers and suppliers of sweet treats, gum, mints and chocolates.Their research showed chocolate is driving the increase. Halloween chocolate sales are up 25 percent over 2019 so far. The NCA released data over the summer showing chocolate was the treat of choice of Americans during the pandemic, with sales increasing five percent March through August over the same time period in 2019. Sales of premium chocolate during that time was up 12 percent year-over-year. Ferrara Candy, which makes Sweetarts, Nerds, Brach’s Candy Corn, Gobstoppers and more, said Halloween sales bring in about .5 billion in sales. In an interview with Axios, CEO Todd Siwak said their company learned a lot from the drop in sales for Easter. This was also the time many stores were closing because of lockdowns to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Even as shopping has picked up a little, they have made some changes.“As the frequency in-store is reduced by the shopper, so fewer trips but bigger baskets, we wanted to make sure we were there presenting the opportunity to consumers,” Siwak said. He added Ferrara Candy created more individually-wrapped confections and got product to stores earlier to extend the selling season.There are still about three weeks until Halloween, and the industry expects sales to increase. Siwak says about 60 percent of the sales for Halloween candy happen in the last few weeks before the holiday.The NCA data also suggested Americans are getting more excited for Halloween in 2020. While many businesses shut down temporarily due to COVID-19, zoos and aquariums couldn’t fully close because animals still need to be taken care of.However, with little to no visitors during what’s normally the busiest time of the year, some are facing tough times and getting creative.“It’s a lot of work,” said Patty Wallace, an Animal Keeper at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.“We feed all of them about three times a day, about 40 pounds each of grass hay, about six pounds of grain per hippo, and also some fruits and vegetables for training and nourishment. So they get lots of variety,” Wallace explained. That’s just the hippos, which are part of a new exhibit the zoo opened during the shutdown.“Opening a brand new exhibit is normally hard enough,” said Bob Chastain, the President and CEO of the zoo.With large groups and traditional presentations considered unsafe, the zoo pivoted. “Now, what we do instead is we’re grabbing random people and taking them back behind the scenes, letting them help us with the everyday things we’re doing,” Chastain said.Letting kids help feed the hippos and other animals, up close and personal.“We are trying to adjust and we would like to share our hippos,” Wallace said. “But because we don’t want crowds, we do it in small bursts.”Back in spring, zoos and aquariums were told to close.“All of them have had a period of two to four months of closure. Some are still closed,” said Dan Ashe, President and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. AZA is a nonprofit that represents over 240 of these businesses.“When they’re closed they’re not really closed, because they have to continue caring for the animals,” Ashe said. That’s what makes zoos and aquariums unique.“The essential ingredient in success is a guest,” he said. Even with no guests, the work doesn’t stop, which has put some in financial distress. “We have had some that have been on the verge of closure.”Ashe said about 20% of its members are in a weak financial position, so zoos got creative to keep guests interested. “The San Antonio Zoo started with the idea of a drive-thru zoo,” Ashe said.At Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, they made use of social media. “Our social media team, like many around the country, really ramped up,” Chastain said.Now as they begin to reopen their gates, they face a whole new set of challenges. “Almost every zoo in the country had to revamp and figure out how to do timed tickets, because it was one of the major requirements,” Chastain said.Timed ticketing, one way traffic, cashless exchange -- these were all concepts zoos and aquariums had to adapt to.“All over the zoo there are marks that help people stay away from each other,” Chastain said.Even with sold out tickets, the crowds are nothing like they used to be. And many fundraising events had to be canceled or postponed with new capacity limits.“Our guess is for the next 12 months, we won’t have those large crowds,” he said.But families continue to come to see the giraffes, look at the penguins, or feed Zambezi and Kasai, the hippos.“It’s been a challenge, but a lot of fun,” Wallace said. 3105
