At the age of 22, Purdue University graduate Andrew Hoyler accomplished his goal of becoming a pilot. But in doing so, his debt took off. He took on 4,000 in student loan debt. “It was tough to look forward to the future, just because 4,000 clouding over your head is not something that anyone wants,” he says. As a new pilot, he brings less than ,000 a month after taxes. Yet, less than two years after he graduated, he's been able to pay off more ,000. “Looking back, it's crazy that it's already come this far and that I’ve been able to pay off this much, but it hasn't been without sacrifice,” Hoyler says. Those sacrifices include living at home with parents, skipping out on vacations with friends and using a large chunk of a ,000 signing bonus to pay down his debt.“It was a little rough putting most of that towards the student loans,” he says. “But here today, I'm happy I made that decision and didn't go out and buy a new car.” Hoyler says he also uses his tax refunds to help pay down his debt. It's something anyone who gets a refund can do, whether it's for student loans, car payments or credit cards. “For many Americans, the biggest windfall they get all year is a tax refund, so this time of year, that is a great opportunity to really take out a big chunk of your debt,” says Arielle Oshea, a personal finance expert with NerdWallet. Oshea says for Americans struggling with debt, taking small steps like cutting cable, skipping eating out or not going shopping can add up.“Small amounts seem like they're going to be a drop in the bucket compared to your debt balance in many cases. But when you add them together and you make a cut here and make a cut there, and you maybe bring in some extra income, all of that adds up and it can very quickly lead to you being able to make bigger payments on your debt every month,” Oshea says. As Hoyler proves, small sacrifices can lead to a big payoff. 1940

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - With intricate, meticulous designs, one look and you’d think Newport News resident Karen Freidt has been baking for years."I've never cooked this much in my whole life," she stated. The recent NASA retiree turned pie sculpture, is turning heads with her new and very detailed hobby. She says the calling to create came to her in a dream."Something woke me up and it was like September 3rd, on your way home, out of your name into your color," she described. So Karen says she wrote down the dream in her phone. "One one of the things I thought about is how can I help others with my art ," said Freidt. After battling pneumonia and being confined to her home during COVID-19 she whipped up a few the tasty treats and posted the edible art on Facebook."The first two pies I posted on Facbeook went viral within a couple days," she said. Within a few days her creative crusts grabbed the attention of Anna Sui, one of New York City's most recognized fashion designers."First thing I said, was how can I confirm this is really you," she stated. "I found out she wanted to use the pies in New York Spring Fashion Week."It took Freidt more than 15 hours to make the pie fashions now garnering national attention."She used the pies prominently in her media, I was shocked," she said. But Freidt hasn't forgotten those here at home. She's already raised more than ,000 for the Peninsula Food Bank, auctioning off her decadent designs."It makes me feel we are all in this together, and the world is so much smaller then you realize," said Freidt. To donate to the Karen's cause for the food bank, click here. WASHINGTON COUNTY, Minn. -- Authorities in Minnesota have charged former police officer Derek Chauvin and his estranged wife, Kellie, with multiple counts of felony tax evasion.Chauvin has been thrust into the spotlight after a cell phone video showed the officer arresting George Floyd and pinning him down with a knee to his neck. That caused Floyd to lose consciousness and the 46-year-old man was later pronounced dead.Floyd's death caused protests across the country demanding action against police brutality.Documents from the Minnesota Department of Revenue show investigators started building their case in June. Documents show the couple did not file their tax returns for 2016, 2017 and 2018. The Chauvins' 2014 and 2015 returns show they did not accurately file taxes.Records account for incidents that led to these charges, like Derek not reporting or overestimating money made as security detail for stores and bars around town, and Kellie not reporting her income from her photography business.Prosecutors say they bought a BMW for more than 0,000 and registered it with their Windemere, Florida address. They showed up to the dealership with Florida driver's licenses. They avoided nearly 0 in fees by paying Florida taxes instead of Minnesota taxes. During an interview with investigators, Kellie told them it was cheaper to register the vehicle in Florida than Minnesota. When asked by investigators why she didn't file returns, Kellie said "it got away from her."According to authorities, they under-reported their income by more than 4,000. Between the taxes the Chauvins owe -- the late payment and penalty fees, fraud penalties, and interest -- the couple owes the state government nearly ,000.Scripps station WFTS in Tampa previously reported that questions had been raised about Chauvin's voting record, after records show him voting in Orange County in-person in 2016 and 2018. He did not claim homestead on his Windemere property, but did claim the tax break on his home in Oakdale, Minnesota in 2018.
