SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday afternoon, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department tweeted that convicted sex offender Cary Jay Smith has left San Diego County. The tweet added, “It is always our goal to keep our communities safe.”Smith had been staying at a motel around the 78 corridor which caused concern for North County community leaders. “I just don't feel good about this situation,” said Melanie Burkholder, candidate for CA State Assembly's 76th District. “This is a very sick individual. He does not need to be roaming the streets,” she said Monday morning. The Orange County District Attorney's Office says Smith claims to have killed three boys and molested 200 others.San Diego County Undersheriff Mike Barnett spoke to ABC10 News on Sunday night. “He liked to be referred to while he was in the state mental hospital as Mr. RTK, which is rape, torture, kill,” he said.It was last Tuesday when he said the CA Department of State Hospitals released Smith from Coalinga psychiatric facility without any restrictions under Megan's law, meaning he is not required to register as a sex offender.Deputies say he's served his time and is free to go where he wants. Before arriving in San Diego, the 59-year-old went to Orange, Corona and Lake Elsinore which sparked outrage in Los Angeles. In an effort to avoid any violence, San Diego deputies did not share his exact location but offered reassurance he was under 24-7 monitoring. The Orange County District Attorney's Office said Monday that its waiting for answers from the Governor’s Office as to why the state released him from the hospital and why the CA Attorney General's Office reportedly revoked his sex offender registration requirement in 2005.Monday, the Attorney General's Office referred ABC10 News to the Department of State Hospitals which said that it couldn't release information because of patient privacy laws. 1889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Parents aren’t the only ones trying to figure out the new school year. Teachers are in the same boat, also dealing with the emotions of not being able to go back to the classroom right away.ABC 10News is following four teachers throughout the new school year, as they navigate the ups and downs this strange time brings.Dawn Harrison is a first grade teacher in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. Teaching is her passion."One of my favorite things is the lightbulb moment when they’re in the process of learning something and it clicks for them and you’re there to witness that click,” Harrison said. “I love their hugs. I love hearing about their day.”That personal interaction is gone for now with teachers preparing to go virtual for the new school year. For Harrison, with no biological children of her own, she views her students as her own children.“It’s devastating, not to get their hugs, their wanting to hold your hand, even the tugging on your shirt,” Harrison said.On top of the emotional connection, there are other questions when it comes to teaching first grade. “How am I going to teach six-year-olds to read via a computer? How am I going to teach them to think mathematically through a computer?” she asked.Harrison’s challenges are different than what her husband faces. Rick Meads is a teacher at Eastlake High School. With the older students, they are much more technologically savvy. “They’re going to be a lot more easily adapted,” he said.He teaches digital media, drama, and theater. He, along with so many other teachers and students, felt the sadness of having to cancel big school events. “The worst part was we were supposed to mount a major production at the school with the theater class and we had to cancel that. That was very disappointing for a lot of the kids,” Meads said. With the Sweetwater Union High School District starting Monday, Meads is preparing to adapt all of his lesson plans. For his classes, like drama and theater, he is going to focus on writing for the beginning of the school year. “In the past, we have written full-scale musicals [and] we’ve done plays,” he said.Kelly Martin is a sixth grade teacher in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. She also faced unique challenges going online with her students.“With adolescents, it’s a little different. Nobody wants to turn their camera on. No one wants to talk in front of anyone, everyone has their hoods on, so getting them engaged is a different challenge,” Martin said. All the teachers are struggling on when it is safe to go back. “I think there is a misconception that teachers don’t want to go back to school. We all want to go back to school,” Martin said. With roughly 3,000 students at Eastlake High School, Meads sees the challenge of how to keep students social distant. For Gina Chavez, a fourth and fifth grade teacher in the South Bay Union School District, she wants to know that students and teachers will be protected.“I want to know that we’re provided with PPE (sic). I want to know that we are going to have our classrooms sanitized,” Chavez said. She wants parents to know that there is a lot going on behind the scenes that many people don’t realize. “I’m in the middle of an eight-week course helping me to get better at teaching online,” Chavez said.“Somebody recently told me they’re calling it a ‘Coronacoaster’, and I think it’s really a good expression of how we’re feeling,” Martin added. 3463

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Padres all-star pitcher Kirby Yates will be out of his comfort zone Sunday night when he and his wife, Ashlee, host a night of stand-up comedy. The event will raise money and awareness for a cause very close to the Yates' heart: Epilepsy. One night in 2018, the couple was asleep when Kirby heard Ashlee begin making strange sounds. It went from that to a seizure. She was pregnant with their second child at the time."It's the first time I'd ever been involved in anything like that," Yates told 10News. "It's hard to see your wife, she's pregnant with our son, and you have feelings that you've never had before.""He was definitely terrified," Ashlee said. "I obviously don't remember it, but I just know he had a very hard time with that."After a myriad of tests, Ashlee was shocked to be diagnosed with epilepsy. "I didn't know it was random and can come at any time or age," she recalls. When searching for ways to cope with the diagnosis, Ashlee turned to one of her favorite things: Stand-up comedy. She had performed at clubs before, but began integrating humor about her condition into her act. "That was actually my outlet. As soon as this happened, that was the first thing I did. I was like, I need to do something drastic to deal with this and I don't know what those options are," Ashlee said. "I like to make people laugh. I like to have fun, so this seemed like a good fit."That led to the decision to host "Comedy for a Cause", which will take place Sunday night at the American Comedy Co. in the Gaslamp. Ashlee will perform with two other well-known San Diego comedians. Kirby and several of the biggest Padres stars will be in the crowd. They also will likely be the biggest targets for the comics' humor, "I know they're big Padres fans, so I'm sure they've been following the season and have some good jokes," Ashlee said. "I did suggest a roast on Kirby.""I told them they can roast me as much as they want and it's fine," Kirby responded. "I enjoy a laugh and I can take it pretty good."Ashlee tells 10News that the show is close to a sell-out, but there are still a few tickets available. 2138

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Portions of San Diego County are gearing up for more dry, windy weather as a red flag warning and potential power outages loom.According to the National Weather Service, the warning goes into effect from 4 a.m. Monday through 10 p.m. Tuesday for the mountains and valleys. The agency says east winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour are expected, with gusts up to 50 miles per hour and isolated gusts up to 60 miles per hour.RELATED: Check your local forecastHumidity will also be low, with values around 10%, the agency said Sunday.“Any fires that develop will spread rapidly. Outdoor burning should be avoided,” the National Weather Service said.SDG&E warned customers to prepare for the red flag warning, adding that it has alerted about 50,483 customers that they could be without power starting Monday night and lasting until Wednesday, depending on the severity of winds."Our crews remain on high alert and stand prepared to respond as needed to the next round of Santa Ana winds expected to impact our region. With our customers just now recovering from disruptive Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) due to the last Red Flag Warning, we hope Mother Nature will be kind to our region in the coming days and weather conditions improve," the company said.SDG&E customers in several areas of the county already endured outages last week after the first round of high winds. The company said that the last of the approximately 70,000 customers who experienced outages had their power restored on Saturday morning. 1545
