SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new plan is calling for more than 170,000 new homes across the San Diego region over the next decade. The San Diego Association of Governments says the region needs 171,685 housing units by 2029 to meet demand. On Friday, its board approved a plan that divvied up those units across the region's 18 cities and unincorporated county based on a formula of job growth and access to transit. "We are in the midst of a housing crisis. It's time to act. Doing things the same way is not going to give us a different result," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. The debate at the SANDAG meeting lasted about four hours, with some of the county's smaller cities saying the plan gave them an undue burden they could not meet. "It is impossible," said National City councilman Ron Morrison, who is not on the board. "Our urban reserve is the weeds behind the backstop in the little field. There is no place to build."National City's mayor Alejandra Sotello-Solis supported the proposal. Most of the homes, 107,901, will go in the City of San Diego. Chula Vista will be responsible for 11,105; Imperial Beach will add 1,375; Coronado 1,001, and Del Mar 163. Del Mar Deputy Mayor Ellie Haviland voted in favor of the plan, though she said she didn't know where those 163 homes could go. "If we are pushing housing away from transit and away from jobs, then that is not going to work with the regional transportation plan we are trying to build," she said. Del Mar Councilwoman Terry Gaasterland, who opposes the plan but did not have a vote, noted Del Mar added 20 housing units in the past 10 years. The board initially voted down the proposal, but Faulconer then called for a weighted vote based on population - getting the necessary votes to pass.Coronado, Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach, Poway, Escondido, Santee, Solana Beach, Vista, El Cajon. The county representatives split their vote. The plan now goes to the state's Housing and Community Development Department for review. 1999

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report is shedding light on what the typical million home looks like in San Diego. According to Zillow, million in San Diego can buy a single-family home that has 2,410 square feet, four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. Families in Chula Vista can get more for their money, where million can buy a 3,890 square foot home with five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. RELATED: City fee could be making rents higher in smaller unitsIn contrast, the same amount of money in San Francisco can only buy a one bedroom condo with less than 900 square feet. On a slightly lighter note, million can typically buy a 1,900 square foot, three bedroom, two bathroom home in Los Angeles, Zillow reports. In the U.S., the typical million home is a detached single-family house with about 2,200 square feet with four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. "Owning a million home was once a status symbol, but now, due to escalating home prices, it feels closer to the price of entry for homeownership in parts of the country,” said Cheryl Young, senior economist at Zillow.RELATED: Study examines San Diego's 'affordability crisis'That million price tag will go furthest is El Paso, Texas, where million will allow buyers to purchase a more than 7,000 square foot home with five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A member of the Phoenix Rising has been suspended for six games after reportedly using a homophobic slur against San Diego Loyal SC player Collin Martin.According to the USL Championship, Junior Flemmings was suspended for six games and has received an undisclosed fine in the incident.San Diego Loyal players walked off the field in protest after the slur was used during the September game.RELATED: San Diego Loyal SC walks off field over alleged homophobic slur"Listen, when we're all on our death bed, nobody's going to remember if we beat Phoenix 3-1 at home ... no one's going to remember that. They will remember that they stood up for something that they believed in and they supported their teammate and they supported what's right in the world. And that to me is what matters more than anything," Loyal coach Landon Donovan said. "I love soccer, I love this game, it's meant so much to me. I love competing ... but, you can't claim that you have these values if you don't act when it really matters.”Martin came out as gay in 2018 while with the Minnesota United.RELATED: San Diego Loyal SC forfeits point due to racial slurThe slur was used just one week after San Diego Loyal said it would forfeit the point it received because of a racial slur used in its game against LA Galaxy II, after the club says midfielder Elijah Martin was the victim of a racial slur by an opposing player. 1423

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local college professor says her a electric scooter ride ended painfully after the scooter turned off in the middle of the ride.Jenny Mahoney, a professor of biology and kinesiology at Point Loma Nazarene University, was with three friends on scooters in December, headed to December Nights in Balboa Park. She says her friends were on Bird scooters, while she was on a Lime scooter with plenty of charge. The ride came to an end two minutes along Harbor Drive near the airport."I was in the bike lane and went from full speed to a dead stop," said Mahoney. She says the screen went blank as the scooter shut down. She remembers her body slamming into the handlebars and was then thrown off the scooter."A lot of pain. I wasn't able to breathe. Got the wind knocked out of me," said Mahoney.Mahoney says one of her friends crashed into her. He got up and carried her out of the bike lane. She suffered a broken bone in her hand, and a sprained wrist and ankle."You assume when you're on these scooters and following all the safety rules rules, you're going to get to your destination safely, but that didn't happen," said Mahoney. The question now: Has it happened before? Mahoney filed a claim with Lime before hiring attorney Evan Walker. Walker tells 10News he just got another call from a Seattle tourist whose wife remains hospitalized in San Diego from a similar incident with a Lime scooter."My understanding is that there have been numerous complaints of a similar nature made about these devices and that Lime is well aware of these complaints," said Walker. In late February, Lime issued a warning to riders of a technical bug that caused sudden excessive braking, usually downhill. Lime says in those cases, the scooter didn't shut off. While Mahoney doesn't know if those cases are related, she doesn't believe her incident is the only one. "I want them to take responsibilities for these injuries that are occurring ... and I want people to be aware, it's not as safe as they think it is," said Mahoney.A Lime spokesperson declined to talk about Mahoney's incident but issued the following statement: “Our entire global fleet has now been fully updated with the final firmware fix that appears to have eliminated occurrences of excessive braking, and we continue to closely monitor the issue to ensure it is categorically resolved.” 2375
