OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Students at El Camino High School have a chance to put their stamp on pop culture. They're designing shoes for the Vans Custom Culture competition.El Camino High School is one of just 500 schools in the country to be picked for the contest. More than 200 students submitted designs at the school, but only two will advance to the national competition.Sophomore Isiah Duran is one of the students whose design was chosen."I basically did what I thought was Oceanside," he says. "The pier, sunsets, the beach."The students could make designs based on two categories, "Local Flavor" and "Off the Wall.""It resonates with the younger culture," says El Camino Art Teacher Diego De La Luz. "It resonates with activities that range from biking to skateboarding and really just the Southern California vibe which Oceanside is all about."The winner will receive ,000 for their school's art department. Vans will also endow a scholarship for a student from the winning school to attend the Laguna Art Institute.De La Luz says the students will decide how to spend the money at the school if they win. He adds that ,000 would provide a big boost to the art department, especially as districts tighten their budgets and art programs are often among the first to be cut."Having that opportunity for the cash prize would cushion some of our artistic ambitions for the students," says De La Luz.Students say it's pretty amazing to try and design for a company they already love."I'm wearing Vans right now," says Junior Aymee Locke. "If I had my own design on a shoe and I get to show that off to everyone, I would totally do that. I think that's super cool."The schools have to turn in their designs by April 16. Public voting takes place from April 22 to May 3. The top 5 designs will be announced May 6-10 with the winners announced sometime between May 13 and 17. 1892

Nothing, not even the COVID-19 pandemic, will stop Santa from delivering toys to good boys and girls every Christmas Eve — and nothing will stop the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) from tracking the big guy's flying sleigh. This year, NORAD launched its 2020 Santa-tracker website, which will be updated regularly throughout the month season with new Holiday-themed games, music and videos. The Santa tracker is live now, and can be watched live at any time on Christmas Eve at NORADSanta.org. "Thanks to the dedicated men and women who keep a watchful eye over North American airspace 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. NORAD tracks everything that flies in and around North America. On December 24, we also have the special mission of tracking and escorting Santa,” said Major-General (Maj.-Gen.) Eric Kenny, Commander of the Canadian NORAD Region. “Utilizing the North Warning System's powerful radar and satellite systems, we are able to see into the North better than ever, allowing us to track Santa more precisely, ensuring he has a safe trip through North American airspace.”Visitors to the site will be able to track Santa's progress as he makes his rounds to homes across the globe.Last month, NORAD said that it would still be tracking Santa this holiday season despite COVID-19 staffing cutbacks. Though the command's Santa Tracker Hotline, 1-877-Hi-NORAD, will still be active on Christmas Eve, not every child will get to speak to a live volunteer and will get a pre-recorded message instead. However, children will still be able to track Santa via social media pages, Amazon Alexa, Onstar and a new mobile app that is available for download now on Apple's App Store and Google Play.According to the Associated Press, NORAD has been tracking Santa every year since 1955, when Col. Harry Shoup of the Continental Air Defense Command took a call from a child who dialed a misprinted department store telephone number looking for Santa. 1967

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Oceanside officials are closing beach parking lots this weekend in order to limit holiday gatherings as the county sees a rise in coronavirus cases. The city says beach parking lots west of the railroad tracks, with the exception of certain Harbor lots near the Harbor Village, will be closed from Friday at 8:00 a.m. through Monday, July 6, at 8:00 a.m.The city will also close all public parking lots in the downtown area west of the railroad tracks and all public parking lots in the Oceanside Small Craft Harbor, except lots 1, 4, 5, 8A, 8B and 9.RELATED: Crowds expected as San Diego beaches remain open this 4th of July"With Los Angeles County beaches closed, San Diego County State Beach parking lots closed, and several Orange County beaches following suit, it was deemed prudent to close Oceanside beach parking lots for the holiday weekend in order to minimize crowded conditions, limit gatherings, increase physical distancing, and slow the spread of the coronavirus," the city said in a statement. There will also be no fireworks displays in Oceanside or at Camp Pendleton on Saturday. The decision comes after San Diego County enacted several measures this week to slow the spread of the coronavirus, including a restaurant curfew and limits on bars. Statewide, San Diego County is the only Southern California county not under new measures to suspend indoor activities in certain businesses and all bar operations.RELATED: San Diego County not named to state's watch list, but leaders warn it may happen soonHowever, local official warn that the county could be added to the state's new mandates as soon as Monday.Despite this, the county has said that beaches will remain open but cities will have the option to close them for the weekend if they chose."With COVID-19 cases rising in the County, it’s essential to take measures to break the chain of transmission in our region, and each of us has a role to play. Please refrain from gathering with those outside of your own household, and wear face coverings when you leave your home and are within 6’ of others," the city added.RELATED: New restrictions placed on bars, restaurants in San Diego County amid coronavirus 2216
