SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Pride Live, the online pride parade and festival, kicked off a day-long event today featuring elected officials, community organizations and businesses.Because of the pandemic, organizers took the historic Pride Parade march through Hillcrest online -- sdpride.org/live/ -- and began at 10 a.m. with a slide show of photos from 46 years of the parade, which started in 1974. The San Diego Women's Chorus followed with a virtual singing of the national anthem. An interfaith blessing, with clergy from various denominations, gave their blessings.In 1994, the San Diego Women Motorcycle Riders first appeared to officially kick off the parade, which usually had about 350,000 participants and 200 pride floats, along with 400 volunteers.This year, about 12 motorcycles from the group took off from the site of the Hillcrest pride flag at University Avenue and Normal Street. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulkener gave a few opening remarks, saying, "We can work and lift each other up and get through this pandemic. We stand united in our battle against bigotry and hate. I wish all of you a happy virtual parade.''The winners of the 2020 Spirit of Stonewall Awards, announced at a rally Friday evening, were honored. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes.The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted Monday to place two ballot measures on the March 2020 ballot, including a hotel tax hike that would fund a convention center expansion, homeless services and infrastructure improvements.The tax increase proposed by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer would raise the city's transient occupancy tax from 10.5% to as high as 15.75% in certain areas of the city, which supporters argue would reap an estimated billion over 42 years.The funding would allow the city to purchase a parcel of land adjacent to the convention center that is currently owned by Fifth Avenue Landing. Once it purchases the land, the city would expand the convention center by roughly 400,000 square feet, from roughly 800,000 square feet to about 1.2 million square feet.RELATED: Hotel tax increase proposed for San DiegoThe land cost is expected to be roughly million, part of an estimated allocation of .5 billion for the purchase and convention center upkeep and marketing. Roughly .8 billion of the initiative's remaining revenue would fund the city's homeless services and shelters, while 1 million would be allocated for repairs to the city's network of roads."This is a measure that is being supported by the lodging industry and is willing to tax its own customers to ... help support homelessness in our community and to help with our infrastructure," San Diego Tourism Authority COO Kerri Kapich said.Voter rights groups and several council members urged that the measure be placed on the November ballot in lieu of the March primary ballot, when turnout is expected to be lower. "The administration shouldn't be in charge of choosing who is overseeing the administration. This ballot measure will help ensure this important position is truly independent."Under the proposed measure, the Audit Committee would recruit and choose three candidates for the city auditor position. The council would then choose one of the three candidates to serve as the city auditor for a pair of five-year terms.Since the position was established in 2009, the city has only had one official city auditor, Eduardo Luna, who served nearly all of his term before leaving for a similar position with the city of Beverley Hills in October 2018.Sherman, the Audit Committee chair, proposed the measure after Faulconer appointed DeeDee Alari, a deputy director in the city treasurer's office, to the position in July. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate rose to 3.3% in June, the first increase in the rate since March, according to data released Friday by the California Economic Development Department.The county's unemployment rate rose from an adjusted 2.7% in May to 3.3% in June. The unemployment rate had steadily declined for much of the year's first half, save for a one-tenth increase from 3.5% in February to 3.6% in March.3.3% in June. Despite the unemployment rate increase, the county's total nonfarm employment increased by 7,100 jobs, from 1,510,200 in May to 1,517,300 in June. Month-over-month farm employment stayed steady at 9,000. Multiple industriesshowed month-over-month job gains in the thousands, according to EDD data.The leisure and hospitality industry added 3,400 jobs from May to June, the most of any industry in the county. Much of that increase, per the EDD, was due to businesses like casinos and hotels bulking up their staffs for the summer. The construction, government and manufacturing industries also showed month-over-month gains of more than 1,000 jobs.Despite the month-over-month increase, the county's unemployment rate remains below last year's June rate of 3.6%. Nonfarm industries added 25,700 jobs from June 2018 to last month while farm employment dipped year-over-year from 9,700 to 9,000.The professional and business services and educational and health services industries added 8,000 and 7,400 jobs, respectively, far and away the most in the county year-over-year. Construction, manufacturing, leisure and hospitality and government jobs each increased by 2,400 jobs or more as well. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police today were investigating the death of a man found lying in the middle of a Rancho Bernardo road.Dispatchers received a call about 11:55 p.m. Thursday from a person who reported seeing a person down in the road near the intersection of Cresta Drive and Sonora Road, just south of Rancho Bernardo Road, San Diego police Sgt. Michael Stirk said.Firefighters responded to the area, found the man and pronounced the victim dead at the scene, Stirk said.Investigators were attempting to determine if the man was hit by a car or suffered a medical emergency, Stirk said.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office was called to the scene and will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.Anyone with information regarding the death was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. 839
