SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified School District's Board of Education approved million in safety upgrades this week.The upgrades will be expedited for installation as well, and include things like security cameras, fencing, locks and gates, and notification systems."We proposed several significant changes that were adopted by the Board of Education at its meeting this week. These changes include fast-tracking several security upgrades at school sites. They also include a move to an 'options-based' model of handling actual threats," a letter to parents from Superintendent Cindy Marten said.RELATED: DA: Nine minors charged in recent threats to local schools"We were impressed this week with the determination our students showed in refusing to allow mass school violence to become accepted as the 'new normal.' We share their determination and we are inspired by their example," Marten added.A date was not given as to when the improvements would be issued.Since the Parkland, Fla., school shooting in February, there have been at least 19 cases of school threats in San Diego County. So far, nine juveniles have been criminally charged in the cases.Marten said in the letter that parents have been reaching out since the Florida tragedy to offer suggestions to safety procedures at the district's schools.The district also focuses on improving school climates for students venerable from becoming disconnected from their peers, according to Marten. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University is celebrating yet another MVP athlete on one of sports' biggest stages.Wednesday, former SDSU baseball ace Stephen Strasburg was award the 2019 World Series MVP award after the Washington Nationals won Game 7 against the Houston Astros.As special an honor as that is, the award also means SDSU has two former players that have been named MVP in their respective sports — in the same season. In June, former Aztec star and then-Toronto Raptor Kawhi Leonard was named the NBA Finals MVP. The pair of postseason MVP awards in the same season are a first for the university. 625

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams.
