INDIANAPOLIS — In a constant battle to keep your private data secure, Apple is hitting back, keeping people out of your phone. But it’s bringing up a major issue for law enforcement in Indiana. When it comes to solving crimes, often a key piece of evidence is stored on a cellphone or a computer, and police are constantly trying to stay ahead of criminals. But as more people and tech giants are concerned about security, some of those new security features and encryption are stopping police from solving crimes. In 2015, Apple was in the spotlight after they refused to unlock an iPhone for the FBI after a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California. At the time, investigators said potential key clues of other possible terrorist attacks could be on the phone. Apple refused to help unlock the device. In the years since, a new device called GrayKey that law enforcement could use to crack iPhones was developed, and they've been using it ever since. "[GrayKey] can plug into iPhones that historically, in general, have what we call 'brute force' on them,” said Steve Beaty, a digital security expert.The September release of Apple's latest operating system, iOS 12, shut down the ability for that special device to work. The result left investigators scrambling. “Apple's fighting these guys pretty hard, has been a bit of a chess game," Beaty said. The Indiana State Police and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department have the ,000 GrayKey device. Both agencies say they only use the device as part of ongoing criminal investigations after a search warrant has been issued by a judge. But even with a warrant, Apple’s latest operating system for iPhones has shut down the ability for the GrayKey to work. Investigators are concerned that they won't be able to solve some crimes because they can't get key pieces of evidence off a new iPhone. "So for the time being, I don't see it being more than a chess game where there are going to be advances made on either side,” Beaty said. “And I don't think there's going to be a definitive ... ‘checkmate’ in the foreseeable future."WRTV asked both ISP and IMPD if they have had any cases where the device hasn’t worked. Abandoned, charred vehicles cluttered the main thoroughfare, evidence of the panicked evacuation a day earlier.Most of its buildings are in ruin. Entire neighborhoods are leveled. The business district is destroyed. In a single day, this Sierra Nevada foothill town of 27,000 founded in the 1800s was largely incinerated by flames that moved so fast there was nothing firefighters could do.Only a day after it began, the blaze that started outside the hilly town of Paradise had grown on Friday to nearly 140 square miles (360 square kilometers) and destroyed more than 6,700 structures, almost all of them homes, making it California's most destructive wildfire since record-keeping began.Nine people have been found dead, some inside their cars and others outside vehicles or homes after a desperate evacuation that Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea called "the worst-case scenario." Their identities were not yet known."It is what we feared for a long time," Honea said, noting there was no time to knock on residents' doors one-by-one.With fires also burning in Southern California , state officials put the total number of people forced from their homes at more than 200,000. He worked side-by-side with neighbors all night, using a backhoe to create a fire line, determined not to lose his house this time."I lost my home in 2008, and it's something you can't really describe until you go through it," said Knuthson, who battled flames eight feet or taller as strong winds whipped hot embers around him. Some were forced back by clogged roads, but all of them eventually made it out, some in dramatic fashion.On the outskirts of Paradise, Krystin Harvey lost her mobile home. She described a town rich with historical charm, until a day ago."It was an old country town. It had the old buildings lined up along the walkway," she said. "Almost all businesses were locally owned and included an assortment of antique shops, thrift stores, small restaurants, two bars and lots of churches."Harvey wondered if the town's traditions would survive. The town was famous for the discovery of a 54-pound gold nugget in the 1800s, which eventually prompted a festival known as Gold Nugget Days. The highlight of the festival is a parade that features a Gold Nugget Queen."My daughter's going out for the gold nugget queen this year," said Harvey, then she paused. "Well, it's been going for 100 years, but we don't know — there's no town now."People in Paradise, like so many in California, have become accustomed to wildfires, and many said they were well prepared. They kept their gutters clean, some kept pumps in their swimming pools and had fire hoses. But the ferocity and speed of this blaze overwhelmed those preparations.Drought, warmer weather attributed to climate change and home construction deeper into forests have led to more destructive wildfire seasons that have been starting earlier and lasting longer.Just 100 miles north of Paradise, the sixth most destructive wildfire in California history hit in July and August and was also one of the earliest. Called the Carr Fire, near Redding, it killed eight people, burned about 1,100 homes and consumed 358 square miles (927 square kilometers) before it was contained.Paradise town Councilmember Melissa Schuster lost her 16-acre Chapelle de L'Artiste retreat, a posh property with a chapel, pond and pool. It's been a while since Austin Rick was in the spotlight but after a Facebook message he posted last week the former country music singer's name is making the rounds again."I decided that I want to shine a light on the monster that is Kirt Webster and I want to hopefully give a voice or at least some confidence and prevent anyone else from becoming his victim in the future," Rick said. Rick moved to Nashville in 2008, the then 21-year-old says his relationship with Webster Public Relations CEO Kirt Webster began in good spirits but things changed and ultimatums were given. "I can make sure you're never broke again, all kinds of these things, but you have to do what I want you to do and you have to follow in my way," Rick explained. Soon, Rick said the incidents began. "He said to me I want there to be fireworks in your career but there has to first be fireworks between the two of us," he said. During one incident, Rick said Webster feared he'd back out of an opportunity to be in Playgirl magazine. "In order to prove that to me I want you to strip down naked right now in front of me. So I stripped down naked in front of him. Then he says come here closer to me and he starts performing oral sex on me," explained Rick. He said Webster continued to reach out to him for years, even sent text messages as recently as this summer. Through a spokesperson Webster denies the allegations saying, "as a single adult, Mr. Webster has had multiple relationships over the course of his professional life, all of which have been consensual.  This includes a brief relationship with Mr. Rick.
