SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Researchers at the UC San Diego School of Medicine released a study Friday looking into loneliness in elderly adults, and found it can be overcome in a variety of ways.The researchers noticed what appeared to be an epidemic of loneliness among adults in senior living or retirement communities, and sought to identify why. According to the study, 85% of the interviewed residents reported moderate to severe levels of loneliness.Dr. Dilip V. Losing spouses, siblings and friends can be difficult at any age, but as contacts from younger years dwindle, Jeste said he found that many residents found making new friends difficult and not as fulfilling as those with whom they grew up. I'm not afraid of it. I used to climb mountains. I want to keep moving, even if I have to crawl. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The remains of a 33-year-old Marine killed last week along with three fellow Miramar-based servicemen in a helicopter crash in Imperial County will arrive in San Diego Saturday in preparation for funeral services.Gunnery Sgt. Derik R. Holley of Dayton, Ohio, and his crew mates were taking part in training exercises near El Centro when the CH-53E Super Stallion they were aboard went down for unknown reasons on the afternoon of April 3. The cause of the crash is under investigation.Holley's body will arrive at San Diego International Airport late Saturday afternoon, then be transported via a military procession to a Mountain View- area mortuary, according to Laura Herzog, executive director of Honoring Our Fallen, a support group for families of military casualties.Also killed in the accident were Lance Cpl. Taylor J. Conrad of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; 1st Lt. Samuel D. Phillips of Pinehurst, North Carolina; and Capt. Samuel A. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County schools are allowed to reopen for in-person teaching starting Tuesday, a day after a flurry of businesses throughout the county resumed indoor operations.Tuesday marks two weeks since San Diego County was removed from the state's COVID-19 watch list and nearly three weeks that the county's case rate has remained under 100 cases per 100,000 people.Remaining below that metric has paved the way for K-12 schools to reopen for in-person teaching, but many districts are expected to take a cautious approach to reopening.Schools that choose to reopen must follow state guidance, including mandatory face covering usage for students in third grade through high school, increased cleaning and disinfecting practices and implementing a six-foot distance requirement, where possible, in classrooms and non-classroom spaces.On Monday, San Diego County businesses including movie theaters, gyms, museums and hair and nail salons resumed indoor operations, with modifications, under newly issued state guidance. Restaurants, places of worship and movie theaters are only allowed up to 25% occupancy or 100 people -- whichever is less. Museums, zoos and aquariums are also required not to exceed 25% occupancy.Monday night, the county implemented a new policy that restaurant patrons sitting indoors must wear masks at all times, except when eating or drinking. Outdoor patrons may still remove masks while not consuming food or beverages.Gyms, dance studios, yoga studios and fitness centers may operate with 10% occupancy. Attached property sales rose 8.8 percent from 820 in September to 892 in October.The increases are a minor rebound after SDAR data showed sales of single-family homes and attached properties fell 25 percent from August to September.Monthly home prices dipped slightly for both single-family and attached properties. Single-family prices fell 0.4 percent from 7,000 to 5,000 while condo and townhome prices fell 2.7 percent from 9,000 to 8,000."The temperature of home prices seems to be cooling, which may lead to a period of calm for the rest of the year," SDAR President Steve Fraioli said. "However, the strength of the economy and the strong job market remains great news for buyers and industries related to real estate."Year-over-year increases show significant declines in listings sold and increases in home prices. Single-family home sales fell 16.8 percent from October 2017 to October 2018, from 1,977 to 1,644. Year-over-year condo and townhome sales fell 15.3 percent, from 1,053 to 892.Sale prices rose 6.3 percent for single-family homes, from 7,000 in October 2017 to 5,000 in October 2018.
