The separation of church and state has come under much scrutiny during this election season.At Zion Baptist Church in Denver, Pastor Rev. Frank Davis is encouraging members of his congregation to vote with faith.“My faith is voting what the bible says about right and wrong, about what the bible about a good neighbor,” he said.While leading a prayer service, Rev. Davis addressed issues ranging from race and religion to prophecies and politics.“America cannot be great with the division that it shares,” he said.A recent survey by the PEW Research Center shows nearly two-thirds of Americans want religious institutions to stay out of politics.Some churches, however, are still getting involved.During this presidential election, members of Zion Baptist Church are stepping outside of their house of worship and helping voters on the ground level.“As a faith-based entity, as a Christian entity, we believe that we are guided by principals that are really higher than day-to-day politics,” said Gwendolyn Mami, one of many members of Zion Baptist Church volunteering their time during this election by providing voters free rides to polling sitesVolunteers are also picking up and delivering ballots to those unable to do so for themselves.It’s a different kind of church service and comes at a time when there are questions nationally about both voter fraud and voter suppression.“This is a very strange time in which we are living,” Mami said. “There is a lot of confusion there is a lot of misinformation.”While Zion Baptist has a long history of political and social involvement in their community, Rev. Davis does not try to sway voters to match his own political views“I have never stood at this pulpit and given anyone a persuasion,” he said. “I will not do so even in this crucial election.”It's an election Rev. The United States has more than double the rate of premature overdose deaths of at least 12 other countries, according to a new?study.The research, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, says that there were an estimated 63,632 drug overdose deaths in 2016 in the US."The U.S. has the highest death rate due to drug overdoses for both men and women (35 deaths in 100,000 men and 20 deaths in 100,000 women) in 2015, more than double those of any other country in our study," Yingxi Chen, one of the researchers and a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute, wrote in an email.Mexico had the lowest rates: 1 death per 100,000 men and 0.2 deaths per 100,000 women.The researchers also found that the United States had the second-highest increase in drug overdose deaths: 4.3% per year in men and 5.3% per year in women, Chen said. Only Estonia had a higher increase.Norway was found to have the biggest decrease in drug overdose mortality for the whole population. Decreases were also found among men and women in Mexico, Spanish men and Danish women.Researchers "looked at the trends and patterns of drug overdose deaths among people age 20 to 64 years in 13 countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development?between 2001-2015," Chen said.These countries were Australia, Chile, Denmark, England, Wales (the data for these two countries was combined), Estonia, Finland, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and the United States."I think it reinforces what we know about the United States but also points out some of the contrast in terms of the ways other countries have dealt with similar issues," said Caleb Banta-Green, principal research scientist at the University of Washington Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute, who was not involved in the research.Banta-Green and the researchers both point out that opioids play a part in the high levels of drug overdose deaths in the US.The study describes US opioid deaths as "triple epidemic waves," starting with prescription opioid deaths in the late 1990s, heroin deaths beginning in 2010 and finally deaths due to synthetic opioids, which include fentanyl.Other countries have found solutions to high rates of opioid-related deaths, according to Banta-Green, who cited France, which was not included in the research."When France got rid of the restrictions on prescribers using the medication buprenorphine, their national mortality, opiate overdose mortality rate dropped 79%," he said.Buprenorphine is a drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration that can be used, alongside behavioral therapies and counseling, to help with the treatment of opioid addiction. It is the "first medication to treat opioid dependency that is permitted to be prescribed or dispensed in physician offices, significantly increasing treatment access," according to the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.Banta-Green believes that creating better access to substance abuse disorder treatments, along with a better national understanding that these are treatable medical conditions, would help reduce the number of overdose-related deaths in the US. This includes giving more people access to medications that could help treat and manage opiate addiction."That's really fundamentally what I think we need to take away from these data finding is that there are solutions, other countries have them, and we are not doing the dramatic things that we need to be doing," he said. 3565

The Sinaloa drug cartel, once run by one of the most wanted men in the world, El Chapo, has made its way to Northeast Ohio. It's a drug-trafficking ring moving large amounts of drugs from Mexico onto the streets."I don't think people understand how significant and embedded it is in Northeast Ohio," said Keith Martin, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of Cleveland's Drug Enforcement Administration. Authorities recently found a stash house in a Maple Heights neighborhood and another on Cleveland's west side. "The unfortunate fact is the drugs on our streets come from somewhere. Coco plants don't grow in Cleveland. Poppy plants don't grow in Parma, they come from somewhere else. They are, increasingly, in almost every case, the drugs are coming from Mexican cartels," said Justin Herdman, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. A three-year long DEA investigation, dubbed "Operation Loaded Deck," focused on taking down the local arm of the notorious Sinaloa cartel. During the investigation, authorities seized large quantities of heroin, cocaine and fentanyl, some of which were concealed in hidden compartments in cars. The drugs were moved across the U.S.-Mexican border and transported in these cars outfitted with secret traps. "Often times they'll go to great lengths, whether they've constructed a trap in a vehicle or a natural void in the vehicle," Major Gene Smith with the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.Just as astonishing, Cartel members were hiding in plain sight the whole time, even taking in a Cavaliers game — courtside."These aren't street-level dealers, they were dealing in massive quantities and, in return, huge amounts of cash," Herdman said. By the end of the investigation, 29 kilos of cocaine, eight kilos of heroin, a kilo of fentanyl and four pounds of marijuana were seized, along with nearly 0,000, guns, vehicles and dozens of cell phones. Operation Loaded Deck ended with 19 people sent to federal prison for their roles in the drug trafficking organization. 2115
