(KGTV) - City planners in Encinitas are seeking public input about the creation of 10 new pedestrian train crossings.The city currently only has six legal crossings, though much of the train tracks are unobstructed and can be crossed illegally.“Safety is one of our utmost concerns,” said Diane Langager, principal planner with the city.She said she has been working on the crossing project for about two years. In addition to safety, she said the city wants to make the area more accessible by walking and biking.“We’re doing everything we can to increase multi-modal transportation in the city,” she said.They have identified different locations where crossings are possible but want input from residents to see what their priorities are. 766

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - The oldest tree at North County’s San Diego Botanic Garden is finding new life as a work of art.The Eucalyptus cladocalyx was planted 100 years ago at the Encinitas garden. It had to be euthanized last year because it was leaning and posing a threat to visitors, officials said.Artist Erwin Young “Mitch” Mitchell IV took the 30-foot stump and transformed it into a replica of a baobab tree. He expects to be finished this week."The Garden is a wonderful place, not only to visit, but to create such a great endeavor there is fantastic - I appreciate the opportunity," said Mitchell. "It is the first time I have ever changed a tree into another tree. (KGTV) -- One of San Diego's few remaining glassblowing studios is on a mission to preserve the art and keep the glassblowing tradition strong for generations to come.“I believe we have to preserve 6,000 years of history," said James Stone, owner of Stone and Glass in Escondido.When Stone opened his shop in 2001 there were 21 studios in San Diego; today there are just four left.He says running a shop is difficult and expensive, but well worth the effort.“The knowledge is hard fought for, hard fought to know how to do this. (KGTV) - A set of triplets took sibling rivalry to new heights in this year's spelling bee at O'Farrell Charter School.Seventh graders Miguel, Maya and Mia Brizuela finished 1st, 2nd and 4th in the school competition, respectively. Miguel advanced to the County-wide bee, held Thursday at Town and Country Hotel in Mission Valley."I'm very good at grammar, so it's really easy for me," says Miguel, when asked how he managed to win. But he also admits he got help from his sister, Maya."We were going back and forth, back and forth. And then, finally, Maya just decided to give up because she said that she didn't want to go to the county," he says.Maya confirmed the story that she let her brother win."Like, 1% of me wanted to win," she says. "But I have stage fright. I didn't want to go up there in the auditorium and spell words in front of a lot of people," she says.But it's Mia, who finished 4th at the school, who believes she's the best speller of the three."I felt like I needed to raise myself to their level of spelling," she says of her finish in the competition. "And I like to correct their grammar a lot."The three say they practice by holding mini-spelling bees at home, where their parents give them words to spell. They also study for 1-2 hours each night before bed.Now that Miguel had advanced to the County-wide competition, his sisters say they'll be there to cheer for him."He's my brother, I love him," says Maya. ERLANGER, Ky. -- Police shot a suspect outside a bar in Erlanger, Kentucky on Wednesday night after the suspect pointed a gun at the officers, according to Kentucky State Police trooper Charles Loudermilk.Loudermilk said two officers from the Erlanger Police Department had been pursuing 40-year-old Dexter Helton, of Florence, over an active felony drug warrant and located him inside Peecox Bar and Grill at about 8 p.m. He fled on foot out the back door of the bar, drew a firearm and pointed it at the officers, at which point an officer shot him. "This action caused a life threatening situation for the officers involved and they were forced to discharge their firearms," Kentucky State Police said in a news release. Helton was airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with "critical injuries" after the incident. Neither of the Erlanger officers were shot or injured. Identities of the police officers involved have not yet been released. Investigators are reviewing footage from the officer's body cameras. Authorities also seized a witness's phone who had posted a video of the moments after the shooting on Facebook. Surveillance video from the bar will also be analyzed, Loudermilk said. Kentucky State Police will investigate the shooting, Loudermilk said.  1359
