SAN LUIS OBISPO, Cali. – It’s harvest time on California’s Central Coast and winemaker Jean-Pierre Wolff has seen a big drop in production since last year. “This year, the harvest is below average,” he said. “Some of my older vines did suffer from salt toxicity and have been steadily declining.” Wolff owns and operates the award-winning Wolff Vineyards. He says climate change is affecting his grapes and that he has the records to prove it. “Absolutely, I have my lab book where I describe extensively the harvest and the sugar levels of the grapes,” he said. “So, definitely I see these changes.” Wolff says the changes are linked to extreme weather like longer droughts, hotter summers and milder winters. “I’ve been farming here for 20 years,” he said. “Years ago, I didn’t have to worry about sunburns on my grapes, now I do.” Less rain means more reliance on irrigation, which Wolff says is cutting into his and other wineries’ bottom lines. “If you take the Central Coast, which is defined from the Bay Area to Ventura County, 86% of the water use is from ground water extraction,” he said. “So clearly, that’s not sustainable if we have to offset.” At nearby California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, they have a growing viticulture program. Cal Poly professor Federico Casassa, Ph.D. says climate change is altering wine agriculture across the world. “Heatwaves are extremely pervasive not just in California but in Australia, in South America, and increasingly in Europe as well,” he said. Despite the impact, Casassa says climate change doesn’t mean doomsday for the wine industry. “My point is global warming and climate change are a reality,” he said. “But the effect that we see on grapes is not only due to global warming, it’s due to the fact that we grow better grapes." Now, Casassa is teaching better and more sustainable practices to viticulture students saying sustainability is not a destination but rather a journey. "Climate change is here and global warming is part of climate change,” he said. “But we are going to adapt.” Adapting, just like Wolff is doing. “I’m sort of here trying to beat the clock so to speak,” he said. To help protect his harvest, Wolff is now replanting a big portion of his vineyard and watering them with a new type of subsurface irrigation. “Instead of irrigating above ground through this drip line I connect with a little spaghetti hose and this pipe goes 3 feet below ground to the root zone,” he said. And while he might not be able to change the climate, Wolff does plan on changing his practices. 2608

When it comes to mental health, it's important to have help in an emergency. But what about a place to go before it reaches that level? “People may not even know what the problem is but they know that something isn’t quite right so if they call a ‘warmline’ they're going to get somebody on the other end who is nonjudgmental who will listen to them in a way that maybe family or friends aren’t able to,” says Tom Hill with the National Council for Behavioral Health. So what is a "warmline”? Think of it as a pre-crisis call if you're having a problem or just feeling off. Some people may find themselves feeling especially off amid the holiday season. Someone on the other end of the line can provide emotional support. They can also connect you to a peer coach or support group, a mental health agency or general resources that can help with everyday life. Warmlines are helpful for those living in rural areas. Sometimes, it can be someone's first contact with mental health services. “Warmlines lift barriers and there still exists a lot of barriers for people talking about problems that they're having that they keep to themselves,” Hill says. “And if we keep it to ourselves, we don’t get better.” More than 30 states have their own warmlines.Several of those can also take calls from anywhere in the country. An unofficial list of warmlines by state can be found on 1387

A Buffalo Public School student’s mother wants answers after she says her son’s teacher dragged him down several stairs. “She was dragging him down the stairs by his knees,” said Tasha Dixon. Dixon says she didn’t witness what happened but someone else did, prompting an internal investigation by the district. “I had received a call from the principal and she said my son had been involved in an incident.” She says her son Malik is in a 611 class, which is for special education students. She says Malik also has a disability. “He asked her to go to the bathroom and she told him no because she felt he didn’t need to go. He sat down and she insisted he move so she took him by the legs and thumped him down a couple stairs.” Dixon says she met with the school principal, who she says indicated an eyewitness came forward to administrators about what happened. During that meeting she says she was told since it happened in a hallway, cameras captured the event, however; she was not allowed to see the video because it is property of the district. “In a closed meeting she said it wasn’t a good video,” Dixon said. “How can you have the audacity to touch my son?” A spokesperson for Buffalo Schools says the district did a month-long investigation and found the claims against the teacher unfounded. The teacher returned to school Friday, more than a month after the incident. Dixon kept her son home from school Friday. We asked the district to see the video. Our request was denied. A spokesperson tells us that’s because the video involved children and personnel matters. 1589
