White House officials and House Democrats said Friday they’re no closer to a deal with on a stimulus package, a week after extended unemployment benefits expired.While the White House said they believe a compromise can be made on some issues, the two sides remain far apart on funding state and local governments. Many states and municipalities are struggling due to decreased revenues and increased costs amid the pandemic.There is also disagreement among the parties, including Senate Republicans, on unemployment supplements as unemployment figures remain over 10%. From April into July, unemployed workers received an additional 0 unemployment supplement on top of standard unemployment benefits. But many Republicans grumbled that the supplement gave incentive for workers to stay home amid the pandemic.Generally, however, if an employer calls an employee back to work, they're no longer eligible for unemployment benefits.Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters on Capitol Hill Friday that he is going to recommend executive orders addressing student loan payments, evictions and unemployment supplements. Currently, federal student loan payments are frozen into October. Also, protection ended last week on evictions.President Donald Trump told reporters late Friday that he plans on signing the order "by the end of the week." But Trump said he expects there will be legal challenges to his order. Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said that there is broad agreement on some issues, such as funding for schools to safely operate amid the pandemic. Previously, the sides also said there is agreement on providing Americans with ,200 stimulus checks for the second time this year. But Mnuchin and Meadows pointed the finger at House Democrats for not compromising on the unresolved issues.“Just to hear the comments from Senator Schumer and Speaker Pelosi saying they “want a deal” when behind closed doors, their actions do not indicate the same thing,” Meadows said.Meanwhile, Democrats pointed the finger back at the White House for not reaching a compromise.While the White House suggested that it would be okay with a partial stimulus package, Democrats are calling for a more comprehensive bill.“We’re asking them to be fair, to meet us in the middle, not to have a my way or the highway attitude, which they seem to have,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said. “We can really get this done, because there are some areas where we didn’t come to an agreement on many things, but we narrowed our differences.”Both the House and Senate have adjourned for the weekend. 2622
While President Donald Trump has pushed hardline immigration policies and vilified undocumented immigrants, his private club in New Jersey has employed people who managers allegedly knew were in the country illegally, The New York Times reported Thursday.The Times found two women who say they entered the United States unlawfully but were employed at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.Victorina Morales, a native of Guatemala, told the newspaper she had crossed into the US illegally in 1999 and was hired at the club in 2013 as a housekeeper using phony documentation.Another woman, Sandra Diaz, who's from Costa Rica and is now a legal resident of the US, said she was also undocumented when she worked at Bedminster between 2010 and 2013, the Times reported."We have tens of thousands of employees across our properties and have very strict hiring practices," Amanda Miller, a spokeswoman for the Trump Organization, said in a statement provided to CNN. "If any employee submitted false documentation in an attempt to circumvent the law, they will be terminated immediately."The Times noted there is no evidence that Trump or Trump Organization executives knew of the two women's immigration status.However, the women told the newspaper that at least two supervisors at the club were aware and took steps to help them avoid detection and hold on to their jobs.Diaz claimed to The Times that "there are many people without papers" and said she had witnessed several others hired though they were also undocumented.The attorney for the two women accused their supervisor at Bedminster of not only knowing about their undocumented status but also abusing them and threatening to have them deported."While working at Donald Trump's estate in Bedminster and interacting with the President and his immediate family, my clients and others were repeatedly subjected to abuse, called racial epithets and threatened with deportation," said Anibal Romero in a statement Thursday."Ironically, the threats often came from the same supervisor who had employed them despite knowing their undocumented status and even provided them with forged documents," she added. "This toxic environment was designed to intimidate these women, leaving them fearful for their safety and the safety of their families."Morales told The Times that she understood she could be fired or deported by going public with her story. According to the Times, Morales has applied for protection under asylum laws and is exploring a lawsuit claiming workplace abuse and discrimination. She also claimed to the newspaper that a housekeeping supervisor at Bedminster made insulting comments about her intelligence and undocumented status.The Trump Organization "did not comment specifically" on Morales or Diaz when asked by the Times.Trump's campaign was buoyed by his harsh stance on illegal immigration and promises of a border wall paid for by Mexico. Bush, is emerging as a consensus candidate to succeed Jeff Sessions as attorney general, two sources familiar with President Donald Trump's thinking tell CNN.A third source familiar with the process said if Trump offered the position to Barr, he would be willing to accept.Trump's consideration of a new attorney general comes during a critical time for special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, of which the next Justice Department chief will inherit oversight. Barr, 68, has previously offered mixed opinions about the investigation, having praised Mueller but also publicly criticizing political donations made by several members of his team.The Washington Post first reported that Barr is the leading candidate. While many have people lost their jobs over the past few months, for some people, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a scenario that made it easier for them to find work. Lashaunda Garner is one of those people.“In my situation I was out of work for 16 years,” said Garner.After nearly two decades, Garner found a work-from-home job at the start of the pandemic.“As soon as I got the job, I was like ‘oh my gosh, I can do something past my disability,’” she added.Garner suffers from severe PTSD and anxiety, which makes it difficult to work in a traditional work environment.“In my case, there are certain sounds, certain smells and things that trigger your depression and when I am at home, I can limit those things,” said Garner.While work-from-home options were previously limited. During forced business closures and stay at home orders, the U.S. saw a surge in work-from-home jobs, especially call center positions.“The pandemic struck, and all of the call centers had to send their agents home. This was worldwide. This was something that never happened before,” said Alan Hubbard. “Some of the agents that were sent home in India, the Philippines and China didn’t have the physical infrastructure in order to do those jobs.”Hubbard is with the National Telecommuting Institute (NTI), which helps people with disabilities work from home. In Garner’s case, it had already helped her setup a home office and everything needed to work from home when the surge happened.“You hear people say, ‘you aren’t your job’ right, but for a lot of people, that is how they identify themselves,” said Hubbard. “That they are working, that they are productive. That is the opportunity that we try to provide.”Garner is just one example out of many people with disabilities who have been able to find work-from-home jobs and thrive in that environment over the past few months.Since the beginning of the pandemic, NTI has had a significant increase in companies come to them for help finding workers. They have four times as many available jobs to fill and have actually been able to place nearly 200 people in work-from-home jobs in the last six weeks. When, typically, it places about 50 people a month.“That is what the pandemic has done. It has opened up this opportunity for these folks,” said Hubbard.Hubbard is currently working with a dozen companies looking to hire another 240 people.Lashaunda is thriving in her current role and hoping her story inspires not just other people with disabilities, but the millions looking for work right now.“Do the best you can and fight for what you want,” said Garner. “It may take you, hopefully not 16 years, but you will end up getting it.” 2681

We've grown accustomed to all things virtual and it seems our pets are used to it too.“It really highlights the value of something like this and it also really highlights where society is living. Even before the pandemic, turned to google, turned to the internet first. It's our first step in almost everything,” says Dr. Sarah Machell.Machell is the lead veterinarian for Vetster, which provides on-demand virtual care for your pet.“Consultations, meeting pet owners in their homes, where they are with their pets, and helping to address urgent and preventive care health conversations to them,” Machell said.She says the company, which launched in October 2019, wasn’t formed because of the pandemic, but they certainly evolved at the right time."The veterinary clinics themselves are feeling a really heavy surge with the pandemic. It’s a pretty crushing situation for them. We already as a profession had some staffing challenges, not enough veterinarians for how many pets and pet owners there are,” Machell said.Pet owners, she says, often have a hard time getting an appointment. Or they have to wait in their cars with their animal outside of their clinic. And, according to Vetster, 50% of pet owners don't even have an established home clinic.“There was a poll recently that showed 37% of American households welcomed a new pet into their home during the pandemic. Pandemic puppies are a real thing,” Machell said.“I think it offers a great addition to the tools I have at my disposal. Telehealth can be used very much the same way,” said Dr. Douglass Kratt, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The AVMA serves roughly 96,000 veterinarians across the country. They've been through a lot this year, adjusting to new norms, like all of us. As in human medicine, they've had to perfect, or initiate virtual options.“It doesn’t replace your veterinarian. What it does is help your vet better serve you and your family member,” Kratt said.Kratt admits there are some obvious challenges.“I can’t hear if your dog is coughing, I can’t listen to the heart and lungs via telemedicine so that wouldn’t be amenable,” Kratt said.He says, however, it's effective overall, and especially worthwhile if it's with your established vet. But if you don't have one, Vetster and other businesses like it aim to help.“There are so many pets and pet owners who sometimes sit on things and aren’t sure if they need to go into a clinic, really appreciate that piece of mind in the middle of the night that no, you don’t need to pack yourself up and get into a vet clinic. This is something you’re okay to wait until the morning,” Machell said.And she says they're prepared to help all animals from pocket pets to exotic and large animals.
