LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Kids are heading back to school, and in order to make sure they're successful in the classroom, doctors say their success is dependent on the amount of sleep they're getting.According to Dr. Jose Colon, a sleep specialist with Lee Health in Florida, it's important to make sure kids not only get the proper amount of sleep every night, but making sure they get into a routine a few days before they're back at school."If we're sleeping in for a longer period of time, which we commonly do sometimes during the summer, we're delaying the exposure to the sunlight and that alters your own natural melatonin, making it so that you have this predisposition towards staying up later," Colon says.He also says set a specific wake up time for kids no later than a few days before they start school. In order to help them get to bed earlier, help them get relaxed by avoiding electronics with LED light."You don't have to walk around the dark with your eyes closed, but doing what you can to minimize artificial lights is going to help your melatonin naturally come out," he says.If kids can't avoid technology, Colon says there's a setting to lower the LED light on most devices. Also, taking a warm bath at night can help kids get to sleep, according to Colon. He says the body will become naturally warmer, but the temperature will drop after leaving the tub. That drop in temperature will help cool the body, which ultimately helps with sleep.He also says adding a few drops of lavender in the bath can help."Lavender oil has been shown to decrease cortisol, which is our stress hormone, and it's helpful for sleep," he says.Still not sleeping? Colon says there are a few at home remedies to try."Melatonin has been studied in children with ADHD, Autism, neurodevelopment disabilities and even with people with migraines and it's been shown to be safe and effective," he says.Colon says to purchase the melatonin with a "GNC" label. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Church-goers in La Mesa attended a service Sunday even as a truck that crashed into the building Wednesday remained wedged in the structure. The large tree-trimming truck crashed into the side of the San Diego Taiwanese Presbyterian Church Wednesday. According to a witness, the crew in charge of the truck was working on the 4400 block of Harbison Avenue around 1:30 p.m. when the vehicle began rolling down a hill. RELATED: Tree trimming truck crashes into La Mesa churchVideo shows the truck start to roll before someone in a bright orange shirt begins to chase the vehicle, but is too late. Fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time of the crash, though the church says several children and volunteers were close by at the time, calling it a miracle that no one was hit. "We all watched helplessly as there was nothing we could do," Rob Engquist, a witness, said. "Turns out they had gone out to reposition it, moved their wheel chalk out of the way, don't know if the parking break was set or what happened, but the truck was going down the road on its own."A witness also told 10News that the truck was originally headed for a home next to the church but hit a curb and careened toward the church instead. 1260

  

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One thing Ernie Togerson, VP for Teague Insurance, and his partner knew when COVID-19 hit, was they wanted to help."We were talking about it and said I really want to do something in the La Mesa community because we're in the La Mesa community." What they didn't know, was how long they'd be helping, for."When we were at 20 weeks the head nurse said 'I never have to worry about folks calling in sick Thursday nights because they know they're gonna get a meal'," Togerson said.23 weeks later, they're still giving free meals to Sharp Grossmont's Intensive Care Unit every Thursday at 8 P.M. on the dot. "We get a chance to talk to them and ask how it's going." COVID hit home for Togerson, his son's an ICU nurse in Michigan. "I told my son we want to do something he said 'bring them meals for the night shift because the day shift gets all the love, and the night shift gets the leftovers'."All of the meals they donate are from restaurants that Teague Insurance covers. While feeding nurses, they're also helping local restaurants, many hit hard from the pandemic.So far, Teague has given out over 300 meals for frontline workers since the start of their efforts. "They say it makes a difference to have someone out there saying thanks for what you're doing." 1297
