SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Veteran's Day hundreds gathered at the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial, honoring those who've selflessly served and sacrificed for the nation.Wayne Thompson, who served in the Navy for 30 years, says he attends the Mt. Soledad ceremony every year.“This world would be a lot different if we didn’t have the people that are on this wall. If they didn’t give their lives for the people in this country," said Thompson.Thompson did three tours in Vietnam and now suffers from health complications due to Agent Orange. He's had 11 seizures but says he would serve all over again if asked.“I kept wanting to serve, I don’t know, I just felt like I was doing something for the country, it’s hard to understand, but you get a fulfillment out of serving somebody," said Thompson.He says he's grateful for those who served before him and those serving now.Col. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council unanimously approved David Nisleit as the next chief of the San Diego Police Department.A search committee interviewed candidates and took public comment on the hiring before announcing Nisleit as the top candidate February 1."SDPD is poised to enter a new era of excellence," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer at the news conference. Faulconer will conduct Nisleit's swearing-in ceremony Tuesday morning.“Dave Nisleit is a San Diegan who cares deeply about making our city better and keeping our neighborhoods safe,” the Mayor said in a statement Monday. “He is someone who holds himself and his officers to the highest ethical and professional standards. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year marks 75 years since many turning points in World War II, including the end of the war on Aug. 14. Now, the men and women who served are in their 90s and many say despite the time, they remember exactly where they were the moment they found out the war was over.“We were told you’re just going on a flight, and we were told you don’t have to, the wars over,” said 93-year-old Navy veteran Al Hansen.“The war ended and they let us all, gave us liberty for the day,” remembered 94-year-old Navy veteran Don Hubbard.RELATED: WWII veteran honors D-Day anniversary with world-wide bell ringingTo commemorate the day, the USS Midway held a ceremony.
