TOKYO, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Sunday that Japan is ready to reconstruct relations with China in cultural, economic, political and other areas, the Jiji Press reported."This year marks the 100th anniversary of China's Revolution of 1911, and next year will be the 40th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese relations," said Kan at the first session of the "China-issue" advisory committee, organized by the Japanese government and attended by personages from economic, cultural and academic circles."On this special occasion," Kan said, "Japan is ready to rebuild relations with China in various areas such as culture, economic and politics."According to local media reports, participants at the meeting put forward suggestions such as "China is a promising market in the economic area, and ties with China are thus of great importance" and "people-to-people exchanges need to be promoted in areas of culture, sports and arts."The committee is scheduled to submit the final advisory report to the government in mid-April.
BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's railways transported about 77.34 million passengers during the fifteen days (Jan. 19 to Feb. 2) before the Spring Festival, the Ministry of Railways said. The figure was about 9.5 percent higher than the same period last year and set a new record, according to a report posted on the ministry's website. There were an average of 5.16 million passengers per day, up 448,000 from the same period last year. On Jan. 29, passengers topped 5.78 million, setting a new record for daily transportation before the Spring Festival, the report said.In the fifteen days before the festival, about 4.80 million passengers left Beijing, 8.39 million left Guangzhou and 5.69 million left Shanghai, while year-on-year growth and those leaving Guangzhou rose the most, up 15 percent year on year, said the report. The ministry said challenges still exist as more snow and rain will hit southern China after the Spring Festival, when passengers are returning.China's busy Spring Festival transportation season runs for 40 days and is calculated in two phases: 15 days before the Spring Festival and 25 days after the Spring Festival, the report explained.

WELLINGTON, May 22 (Xinhua) -- One in every eight women giving birth in a New Zealand hospital last year was Asian, local media reported Sunday. In the country's most populous city, Auckland, 5,149 Asian women gave birth, more than double the number of 15 years ago, the New Zealand Herald reported.Last year was the first year in the city when more Asian women gave birth than indigenous Maori women, who registered 5,015 births.Citing figures from the government statistics agency, Statistics New Zealand, the report said the majority of women nationwide who gave birth last year were still of European descent, accounting for 43,965 of last year's 63,897 births. But more women of other ethnic backgrounds were also becoming mothers, including those from the Middle East, Latin America and Africa.Auckland University head of obstetrics and gynaecology, Professor Lesley McCowan, said the increase reflected New Zealand is an increasingly multicultural society.
BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Computer sales declined in the first three months of this year for the first time since 2009 worldwide.PC sales fell 1.1 percent in the first quarter to 84.3 million worldwide, according to tech research firm Gartner Wednesday, well short of its forecast for 3 percent growth. The dip was the first since the second quarter of 2009, when most of the world was still in the grip of economic turmoil."Although the first quarter is traditionally a slow one for PC sales, these shipment results indicate potential sluggishness, not just a normal seasonal slowdown," said Gartner, in a statement.Consumers select IT products at an IT fair named "Sham Shui Po computer festival" in Hong Kong, south China, Feb. 15, 2011. The eight-day IT fair kicked off here Monday. Some 600,000 people are predicted to visit the fair.Weak demand for consumer PCs was the biggest drag on the market, according to Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa."Low prices for consumer PCs, which had long stimulated growth, no longer attracted buyers," Kitagawa said."Instead, consumers turned their attention to media tablets and other consumer electronics."After Apple's second-generation iPad was released in February, many consumers either switched allegiances or simply held back from buying PCs, according to the analyst.Japan was a particularly weak spot, with PC sales falling 13 percent in the quarter, as people focused on getting back to normal after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami rather than spending money on new technology.
PARIS, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Heavy-load launcher Ariane 5, carrying two communication satellites GSAT-8 and ST-2, lifted off at around 22:38 p.m. Paris time (GMT 2038) on Friday from Europe' s Spaceport in French Guiana.Built by Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Company, ST-2 will offer Ku-and C-band relay services across the Middle East, Central Asia, India and Southeast Asia to the ST-2 Satellite Ventures joint company of Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (SingTel) and Taiwan' s Chunghwa Telecom Company Ltd..With a weight around 5.1 tons at launch, ST-2 was separated first around 27 minutes after the lift-off.
