SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A new study shows that young adults are seeing a spike in deaths from liver disease related to binge drinking. It's especially dangerous in California, where high alcohol content drinks are popular.The study, published this month in the British Medical Journal, says that the number of 25- to 34-year-olds who died annually from alcohol-related liver disease nearly tripled between 1999 and 2016, from 259 in 1999 to 767 in 2016, an average annual increase of around 10 percent.It cites binge drinking as a leading cause, because of rising rates of alcohol consumption between 2002 and 2012.It's especially bad in California, which the study says was among the top five states for those types of deaths.Local experts say the kind of alcohol we drink may be to blame, as craft beers tend to have higher concentrations of alcohol."If someone was having highly concentrated alcohol, then they're consuming more drinks per hour," says Dr. Rohit Loomba, with the UC San Diego Health Liver Center. "That will have detrimental effects on the liver, for sure."The CDC recommends no more than 1-2 drinks per day for "moderate" drinking. Binge drinking is defined as 4 or more drinks over 4-6 hours. Loomba says you may hit the "binge" point in fewer drinks if what you're having is stronger.For example, a Bud Light has just 4.2% alcohol by volume. Craft beers often have 6% or higher, so one craft beer may be as much as 2 or 3 other drinks."That quantity of alcohol intake over years definitely will contribute to higher risk for liver disease," says Loomba.He says people should ask themselves four questions to determine if they are drinking too much:1. Have you ever cut down on drinking? 2. Would you be annoyed if somebody asked you to cut down on drinking? 3. Do you feel guilty after drinking excessively over a weekend? 4. Do you need an "eye-opener" in the morning to get to work?Dr. Loomba says if you answered "yes" to 2 or more of these questions, you should talk to your doctor to discuss treatment.He also says obesity combined with alcohol can lead to more severe liver problems and even death. People with diabetes or who are overweight multiply their risk of the disease."If you're obese, you not only should restrict your alcohol, but you should try to lose some weight as well," says Loomba.The study says the financial crisis may have led to more binge drinking in the past decade, as young adults turned to alcohol to cope with financial stress. Researchers found the rise in alcohol-related deaths overlaps with rising rates of binge drinking from 2002 to 2012 observed across much of the U.S.The good news, according to the study, is that many liver diseases are preventable and reversible."Once you stop alcohol use, you can reverse complications related to it in the majority of cases," says Dr. Loomba. 2882

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — As we work to manage the pressure of the pandemic, a new device could take away some of the stress.San Diego State University (SDSU) engineers, biologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and public health experts have worked together to develop a wearable device to detect early, remote detection of lung function abnormalities.“Knowing the current status of our health, I think that will give a lot of benefit," said Kee Moon, a researcher, and professor of mechanical engineering at SDSU. The size of a Band-Aid, the wearable device contains medical-grades sensors, collecting more than 4,000 data points per second. Placed on a person’s chest, it monitors heart and lung health, looking for problems in real-time.The device can detect abnormalities in the lungs before a person shows COVID-19 symptoms, alerting doctors before there’s a true emergency and hopefully preventing hospitalizations.By monitoring heart health, users can also get a better sense of their stress levels.“Understanding the level of stress you’re getting is important, as important as the other physical health monitoring," said Moon. Moon was already working on the technology before the pandemic to monitor other health conditions like asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, and lung cancer. But COVID-19 accelerated and pivoted the focus of the research.The team hopes to license the technology to a company that can produce and sell the device, likely at a price of around a few hundred dollars.“Seeing that would be a tremendous joy for me," said Moon.Moon is hopeful the wearable could be sold next year and that it will continue helping patients after the pandemic is over, delivering a sense of control in a time of such uncertainty. 1740

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A calm overnight allowed firefighters to make progress against a trio of massive fires burning in Northern California. But they are girding for the arrival of a weather system Sunday that will bring high winds and thunderstorms that could spark new fires and fan existing blazes that already destroyed nearly 1,000 homes and other structures and forced tens of thousands to evacuate. On Sunday, President Donald Trump said he approved a major disaster declaration for California on Saturday after speaking to California Governor Gavin Newsom."We're working very closely with the governor and very closely with a lot of great state representatives and local representatives. And we'll take care of the situation," Trump said on Sunday. Trump added that the federal government had already deployed over 26,001 first responders, and personnel to battle the wildfires.The fires surrounding the San Francisco Bay Area were started by lightning strikes that were among 12,000 registered in the state in the past week. Types of elder abuse include: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, neglect, or financial abuse. The county sees about 450 cases a year of criminal elder abuse cases, according to Paul Greenwood with the Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit of the District Attorney’s Office.  The District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Unit prosecutes crimes against seniors, as well as addresses the special needs of elderly victims. They meet with seniors to teach them how to protect themselves, train bank and credit union employees on protecting financial assets of elderly customers, and train first responders to be aware of issues involving elders.  The National Council on Aging? said approximately 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced some type of elder abuse. However, knowledge about elder abuse lags behind the fields of child abuse and domestic violence.
