SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Prosecutors Friday announced charges against 10 alleged members of a San Diego auto insurance fraud ring, who are accused of buying damaged vehicles and staging car thefts in order to collect more than 0,000 in fraudulent claims.The defendants -- four were arrested this week, while a half-dozen others remain at large -- are accused of buying already-damaged vehicles with high mileage, then submitting false damage or theft claims, defrauding a dozen insurance companies in the process, according to prosecutors and the California Department of Insurance.Investigators allege the suspects filed about three dozen false claims over the course of four years, with 56 vehicles used in the alleged scheme. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sixteen new cases of COVID-19 were reported Saturday by San Diego State University, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,064 since Aug. 24, the first day of instruction for the fall semester.The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Friday.Of the students living on campus, 380 have tested positive and students living off campus totaled 663 positive cases, health services said. A total of eight faculty or staff members have tested positive and 13 "visitors," people who have had exposure with an SDSU-affiliated individual, have tested positive.The information is based on cases reported to Student Health Services by an individual or by a public health official. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric officials announced a campaign Wednesday to publicize job openings and recruit as many local candidates as possible to support the region's ongoing economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.SDG&E has continued hiring new employees amid the pandemic, not just to fill positions that have opened up due to attrition, but also because the company and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 465 adopted a joint plan earlier this year for new multi-year hiring, training and apprenticeship programs.These programs are designed to help develop a highly specialized and skilled workforce to complete critical infrastructure projects needed to enhance wildfire safety, upgrade natural gas pipelines and expand the electrical vehicle charging infrastructure needed for zero emission transportation, officials said.The latest job openings are posted at sdge.com/careers.The recruitment awareness campaign will begin on Monday with the first of a series of chats with company recruiters on SDG&E's Instagram channel. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian near a Logan Heights intersection.The crash happened around 8:50 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 25th Street and Imperial Avenue, east of Interstate 5 and south of state Route 94, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.A man, whose age was not immediately available, was walking westbound in the left-turn lane of Imperial Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle heading eastbound on Imperial, Buttle said.ABC 10News learned the victim was dragged several yards; the driver of the suspect vehicle, described as a silver or gray two-door sedan, fled the scene without stopping.No description of the driver was immediately available.The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the officer said.
