SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's rattlesnake season year-round in San Diego but now is the time they come out in full force due to warmer temperatures.San Diego Animal Services says the number of urban sightings this April is higher than this time last year, 94 versus 87. However, for the whole year, sightings are down compared to 2017.Rangers at the Mission Trails Regional Park say hikers should not panic if they see a rattlesnake on the trail. They even recommend taking a picture if you're a safe distance away.RELATED: What to do in the event of a rattlesnake biteRattlesnakes common throughout Mission Trails are the Southern Pacific and Red Diamond. Each can be several feet long and can strike about half their body length.Hiker and volunteer guide Daryel Stager recently spotted a five-foot Red Diamond rattlesnake eating a possum."I thought it was pretty cool, I don't usually see them with prey they've killed," said Stager. "They want to be left alone and get some rays - like going to the beach."Experts recommend keeping dogs leashed so that they do not startle a rattlesnake off the trail.  1112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's a disease that kills nearly a half million people a year. Mostly children. But painstaking work right here in San Diego is bringing the world ever closer to ending malaria."After you've been doing it for a while you get a little bit tired," said PhD student Madeline Luth, as she works over a microscope, "You're hands get a little bit shaky."She's part of a research team at UC San Diego involved in tedious, precise work."I'm using my syringe here to separate out a single mosquito," she said, "to isolate the thorax which contains all of the malaria parasites." Malaria is a parasite spread by mosquitoes; making the insect the deadliest organism on the planet -second only to humans. Millions of people -primarily in poor parts of the world like Africa- are made sick by the parasite every year. And hundreds of thousands die."What we're trying to do is interrupt the process so the infection never takes hold in your liver.," said Dr. Elizabeth Winzeler, who heads up the research team at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. "So you never develop any symptoms of the disease".Dr. Winzeler says here team has tested more than a half million compounds against the parasite. And is now about to release hundreds of promising mixtures to researchers around the world. "They can take the recipes and the information that we've used and start their own anti-malarial drug development," says Dr. Winzeler.The open door approach with no intellectual property protections, is made possible by billions of dollars in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is also a necessity since the vast majority of those new drugs will save, are too poor to pay for medicine. The venture is purely to save lives. "We're doing this for the good of humanity, says Dr. Winzeler, "And I think everyone is on board with this idea." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local gym owners are faced with another difficult decision as San Diego County moves into the purple tier, the most restrictive of the state’s classifications of COVID-19 spread.Under the new regulations, gyms may not operate indoors, meaning those who cannot operate outdoors will be mandated to close.The restrictions take effect Saturday.RELATED: County moves into California's COVID-19 purple tier“You want your members happy. You want your staff happy. You’ve got to put food on your table. And you’re trying to do the right thing, you’re wearing a mask and you’re indoors, so it’s going to be just an unbelievable, worrisome time,” said Bryan Welch, general manager of the Point Loma Sports Club.Welch said the new restrictions will not have a significant impact on his gym because the Point Loma Sports Club had already moved 90% of its operations outside. But he said he empathizes with gyms that do not have usable outdoor space or a cooperative landlord.Even some gym owners that can move outside may not choose to do so. They say limits would force them to operate at an untenable loss, leaving them to choose between operating indoors in violation of public health orders or going out of business. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday, and as part of "America Reads," the United Way of San Diego is holding a week-long book drive across San Diego County."Reading to children is the utmost important thing a parent can do," says United Way CEO Nancy Sasaki.The United Way will accept book donations at their office, and also at any SDCCU branch location across the county. They're also teaming up with Warwick's Book Store in La Jolla for donations.The need is most significant among low-income families. The United Way says 61% of low-income families in San Diego don't have any books in their homes for kids. That puts them at a significant disadvantage."If a kid is not at a 3rd-grade reading level by the end of third grade, we know they're four times more likely not to graduate high school on time," says Sasaki. "And if they come from low-income communities, they're six times more likely to fall behind."Studies show that reading to children as few as three times each week helps promote vocabulary and reading proficiency."In many family settings where the parents are working 2 or 3 jobs, and they're crossing paths in the night, and they're barely able to get the food on the table, reading is not so easy to do," Sasaki says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Millennials are leaving San Diego in the thousands, according to a new report by Brookings. The new Census Bureau migration data reveal a post-recession shift in the migration of young adults and seniors. From 2007 to 2012, San Diego lost more than 7,400 people between the ages of 25 to 34 annually. From 2012 to 2017, the number dropped slightly to a little more than 7,000.
