BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Food, clothing and shelter supplies for the mudslide-affected people in Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province are to be properly handled, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Tuesday.The affected people will be helped by the government to reconstruct their homes, the ministry said in a statement.China's Ministry of Finance has allocated 500 million yuan (73 million U.S. dollars) for emergency aid to fund the relief efforts.The statement said the resettlement program will be carried out in three stages.The first stage of emergency aid is resettling the affected people in temporary shelters.The second stage is the stopgap resettlement of people in houses of relatives, friends, neighbors as well as rented houses and houses offered by the government.The third stage is reconstruction and the moving of people into their new homes.Efforts should be made to finish reconstruction of toppled houses before winter sets in, or no later than June 2011, the statement said, noting the repair of damaged houses shall be finished by November this year.The ministry will soon flesh out the resettlement program after learning further details of the disaster, an official at the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.The death toll from the massive rain-triggered mudslide in Zhouqu County has risen to 702, with 1,042 others still missing.Also on Tuesday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said 7,000 tents, 21,400 cotton quilts, 5,000 folding beds and 5,000 sleeping bags had arrived in Zhouqu.Along with the shelter supplies, instant noodles, drinking water, generators, candles and flashlights have also arrived in the county, with more supplies en route.In addition, the State Administration of Radio Film and Television has transported 10,000 radios and 5,000 televisions and satellite dishes to the affected area to ensure local people know the latest information concerning the rescue and relief efforts.As of 6 p.m. Monday, the Red Cross Society of China and its local branches had offered relief funds and materials worth more than 6 million yuan (about 886,000 U.S. dollars).The organization has called for more donations, asking the public to log on to redcross.org.cn to donate, apart from donating through banks and post offices.The State Council, China's Cabinet, released a circular Tuesday calling for better coordination between local rescue and relief teams.The circular encouraged financial donations from the public for the organized procurement of supplies.It also urged people other than rescue and relief workers to not go to the disaster-hit county.

GUANLING, Guizhou, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers Sunday gave up searching for more survivors, six days after a rain-triggered landslide buried 99 people in a southwest China village, citing mounting concerns to head off the outbreak of disease as well as the slim chance anyone could have survived after nearly one week.Only 42 bodies have been recovered at the landslide-hit Dazhai Village in Guanling County, Guizhou Province. But rescuers said it was unlikely to find any more survivors six days after the disaster amid the humid and hot weather.Police said they have begun to cremate the bodies after extracting DNA samples.Also, rescuers said life-detecting equipment found no traces of life while 20 excavators failed to uncover any body after turning some 400,000 cubic meters of mud at the site.On Sunday, police cordoned off the site and treated the area with disinfectants to prevent the outbreak of epidemics.Excavators that had been combing the ruins for six days were replaced by trucks carrying bleaching powders, disinfecting materials, and vaccines.Zhu Zhengming, deputy chief of the provincial health bureau, said the medical team faced increasing pressure as viruses and bacteria reproduced faster in the ongoing lingering heat.For the sake of the health and safety of rescue workers, they must leave the site, Zhu said, ordering quarantine personnel to disinfect the ruins every six hours for four times before it is completely sealed off for three months.Meanwhile, the government of Guanling announced on Sunday that families of each victim are entitled to cash compensation of 5,000 yuan and 500 kilograms of rice.8 Wang Mengzhou, the Party chief of Guanling, said a memorial service would be held near Dazhai Village on July 5 -- exactly one week after the landslide engulfed Dazhai and buried 99 local residents.Downpours drenched much of south China in late June, leaving 266 people dead and another 199 missing in eleven provinces, the National Commission for Disaster Reduction said last Friday. BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities said Tuesday that rains are expected to fall on parts of east China starting Thursday, offering some respite to a wide-ranging heat wave that had wreaked havoc across the country over the past few days.From Beijing in the north to Guangzhou in the south, a number of the elderly and children were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses. Some zoo animals died or struggled to survive by laying on ice.Also, a passenger bus caught fire in downtown Beijing and swarms of locusts blanketed a couple of dry prairies and grasslands in the north.The National Meteorological Center (NMC) raised the heat alert to orange on Tuesday, one step before the highest level, and said at least 16 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities were enduring the extreme heat.In Beijing, the temperature shot up to 40.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the city's early July heat record in more than 50 years. Further, the extreme high temperatures would continue in north, east and west China for the next 24 hours before rains begin to fall, the authorities said."Every day we have about 300 patients, 100 more than the average," Qin Jian, head of the emergency unit of Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing, said. "The wards and emergency rooms have been full right from the morning."

ULAN BATOR, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- A group of children from China's earthquake-stricken Qinghai province arrived in Mongolia on Tuesday for an eight-day visit.A ceremony was held at the Nairamdal international children's center, 27 km from the capital city of Ulan Bator, to welcome the 59 children and youngsters from Qinghai in western China, which was hit by a major earthquake in April.Prime Minister Batbold Sukhbaatar invited the children from the quake-hit region for a visit in early June when Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Mongolia.Last year, 60 children from China's southwestern Sichuan province, which was also hit by a deadly earthquake in 2008, visited Mongolia at the invitation of then Prime Minister Bayar Sanjaa.
