WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has vetoed the annual defense policy bill.Trump followed through on threats to veto the measure that has broad bipartisan support in Congress and it potentially sets up the first override vote of his presidency. The bill would affirm 3% pay raises for U.S. troops and authorize more than 0 billion in military programs and construction.Trump has offered a series of rationales for vetoing the bill, including his calls for lawmakers to include limits on social media companies he claimed are biased against him.The bill, which was approved earlier this month by overwhelming majorities in both legislative chambers, had enough votes to override Trump’s veto. The House approved the bill by a 335-78 margin, while the Senate approved it 84-13.Part of Trump’s grievance with the act was due to Section 230 not being repealed, which is a code that protects websites and social media companies from litigation for materials published by users. Trump has called on the repeal of Section 230.Trump has aired his frustration at major social media organizations such as Twitter for tagging tweets that contain misinformation.“The Act fails even to make any meaningful changes to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, despite bipartisan calls for repealing that provision,” Trump alleges in a letter returning the bill to the House. “Section 230 facilitates the spread of foreign disinformation online, which is a serious threat to our national security and election integrity. It must be repealed.”House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she is in favor of amending the code, but not repealing it entirely. Pelosi said there is bipartisan support for revising the code.“I don’t like 230, I think it needs to be revised,” Pelosi said. “You cannot repeal it or you will destroy protections for small businesses and entrepreneurs.”Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, a close ally of the president's, said that Trump would approve defense spending and the stimulus package if Congress agreed to repeal Section 230. On Tuesday, Trump said he was not supportive of the stimulus bill passed by overwhelming majorities in the House and Senate earlier this week. The bills would have provided 0 direct payments to most Americans. Trump, however, did not outright say he would veto the pandemic stimulus package. "I hope Speaker Pelosi will agree with President Trump that Big Tech needs to be reined in by winding down Section 230 liability protections," Graham tweeted. "I have reason to believe this combination will lead to President Trump supporting the NDAA and COVID19 omnibus bills." 2620

We're highlighting people taking action on behalf of racial equality in their everyday life. That includes a woman who started a parody Twitter account centered around the neighborhood network Nextdoor.“I just found that Nextdoor brought so much levity to my day, at least in my neighborhood, because Glenn Park is a really quiet residential neighborhood in San Fran, so I had this one neighbor that would complain about someone rearranging her lawn gnomes every single day at 4 p.m. like on the dot,” said Jenn Takahashi, the creator of the @BestofNextdoor Twitter account.Takahashi says she basically started the twitter account to make other people laugh. She posted passive aggressive arguments between neighbors, people helping each other and other funny posts. However, she says she also got a lot of submissions that weighed heavy on her and highlighted what she described as racism running rampant.“I always struggled with that because I didn’t want to put that negative energy back out there, but at the same time, I feel like those stories need to be told also,” she said.Recently, Takahashi tweeted Nextdoor’s tweet saying “black lives matter” with another person's post that got taken down for the same thing. Since then, people have shared even more stories of unexplained censored or deleted similar posts.A petition was even started to get racial bias training for Nextdoor neighborhood leads or moderators, among other demands.“I did not realize how completely what a mess their lead program was,” said Takahashi. “These people don’t have any training at all.”Since all this, Nextdoor has said it will "better educate our neighbors on what is and is not allowed on the platform, drawing a firm line against racist behavior and removing comments and members who violate the rules.”Nextdoor also ended a feature that allowed users to forward their posts directly to a local police department. 1913

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The constellation of polling places across the country forms the backbone of voting in America. Yet, with about 117,000 of them, it doesn’t always run smoothly.“Some of them are commonplace situations, folks who may not know what ID they need to vote,” said Izzy Bronstein, campaign manager with the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization Common Cause.Common Cause is one of several organizations banding together for the nonpartisan effort Protect the Vote to ensure every vote gets counted in the 2020 election.“There are a number of problems we expect this year,” Bronstein said.Among the potential issues: confusion over mail-in ballots, early voting dates, whether ballot witnesses are needed and what polling sites are open, as well as the potential for voter intimidation. Fear of that is rising on the heels of President Donald Trump saying at the first presidential debate, "Go to the polls and watch very carefully."With all of that in mind, Protect the Vote is recruiting thousands of volunteers across the country – 20,000 signed up so far – to be on hand at polling sites to answer voter questions. They will also help get them in touch with attorneys – from the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law -- through a nationwide hotline, so they can assist a voter if they run into trouble casting a ballot.“We know that this is a big election with a lot of at stake,” said Suzanne Almeida of Common Cause PA, which is heading up the effort in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.Almeida is quick to point out that their volunteers are not poll watchers, which are people usually affiliated with a particular candidate.Instead, volunteers with Protect the Vote are called poll monitors and are non-partisan.“It is even more incumbent on us, particularly wearing our nonpartisan hat, to make sure that the election runs smoothly, because we know that folks are going to be looking carefully at the results in Pennsylvania,” Almeida said.Other battleground states, like Florida and Wisconsin, can also expect an election spotlight since there have been election-related issues there in the past.“It's about making sure that every voter gets their ballot counted and their voice heard in our democracy,” Bronstein said. “And that's really something we can all come together on.”If you run into any issues while voting, Protect the Vote has set up a nationwide hotline, staffed by attorneys from the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. That number is (866) OUR-VOTE or 866-687-8683For election help in Spanish: 888-VE-Y-VOTA or 888-839-8682.To volunteer as a poll monitor, click here. 2633

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Adult-film actress Stormy Daniels was honored in West Hollywood with her own day and a key to the city Wednesday. While at the ceremony, Daniels said jokingly, “I’m not really sure what the key opens. I’m hoping it’s a wine cellar."West Hollywood Mayor John Duran proclaimed Wednesday “Stormy Daniels Day” after praising the adult-film actress. RELATED: Stormy Daniels files defamation lawsuit against Trump"Out of all the chaos of the Trump administration, our own Lady Godiva appeared on horseback," Duran said during a raucous presentation at Chi Chi LaRue's erotic apparel shop. "And as you know, Lady Godiva rode naked through the streets of England to protest injustice and taxes, and we have our own Lady Godiva here in the city of West Hollywood."Daniels is suing President Trump and his attorney in federal court in hopes of invalidating a non-disclosure agreement she signed.Daniels claims, despite signing the document herself, that it’s invalid because Trump never signed it.RELATED: Judge denies motion by Stormy Daniels' attorney to depose Trump, CohenTrump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, admitted to paying Daniels 0,000 as part of the non-disclosure agreement. 1232
