"It’s supposed to be a place of education and I can’t really get back into that sense of academia and creativity with all that’s going.”On their first day back from spring break, Broward County School District enacted new security measures at the high school in an effort to keep students safer.Jack and his classmates weaved through rows of barricades to get into school. Jack tweeted a video of the experience.“It’s seriously like the TSA," he said in the video.Jack's peers also took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the security measures.“Posting stuff like that gives the whole audience of Twitter a big insight into what it’s like now in the day of Marjory Stoneman Douglas," Jack said.Jack said there are no metal detectors at the entrances yet, but he's expecting that to come soon.Some students tweeted asking if pre-check will be available like at the airport and if they need to start taking off their shoes when they get to school.However, the new clear backpacks got most of the heat on social media. “I don’t think that it does anything," Jack said. "I don’t think the issues that have come out of this movement that people are debating and disputing about are backpack related.”Students call the backpacks a violation of privacy. “We earned that right to privacy and we kind of got it confiscated when two knives were taken to school," said Annabel Claprood, a sophomore.Camern Lo put a piece of paper in her new clear backpack saying, ‘This backpack is probably worth more than my life.'Some students say while they understand the intentions are good, these measures are band-aids to cover up the real problems."I don’t think that it does anything," Jack said. "I don’t think the issues that have come out of this movement that people are debating and disputing about are backpack related."Students also have to wear their I.D. badges at all times. They received lanyards Monday to wear them on."They did not check my I.D.," Annabel said. "They did not check anything. I walked in. No questions asked. It was just like it was before nothing’s really changed except now you can see our personal items.”Annabel took her ideas on how to make her school safer straight to the superintendent during a meeting right before spring break."Bring your voice to the people who will listen who are going to do something with your voice," she said.She said she wants to see more modern technology used to secure the school. She says that’s what would make her and her peers feel safer, something she knows adults are trying to do.“Until we see all of us on the same page working together, nothing’s going to happen," she said.“I don’t know what exactly America needs right now, but I do know that we’re all talking about it," Jack said.Florida Highway Patrol troopers are guarding entrances to the school as Governor Rick Scott promised nearly two weeks ago. Several Hilltown, Pennsylvania, police officers helped save a distressed horse from a burning barn last week, which was captured by an officer’s body-worn camera.Officer Matthew Reiss told KYW-TV that he did not have much time to get Phoebe the horse out of the barn."Quickly improvise, and come up with a solution to get that animal out,” Reiss said.Other horses were in the barn at the time of the fire and were rescued by friends and family, but Phoebe was reportedly too spooked to follow.That’s when the officers and horse trainer Lena Obernesser teamed to get Phoebe out. Obernesser used a shirt to cover her eyes and push the horse to safety as Reiss used a rope to pull Phoebe to safety. Phoebe then ran to safety."She was definitely terrified, the cops were fantastic though, they jumped right in,” Obernesser told KYW. “I saw the footage and I was just in awe. Like oh my God, thank God they were here."Obernesser credited the officers for rescuing Phoebe.“They really stepped up, we had so many people reaching out,” she said. “it was, I was so proud to be a part of this community."After a week, Phoebe is reportedly in good health. The condition of the barn is still being calculated, but members of the community have started a fundraiser to help the Red Wing Farm care for their horses. 1309

Seven years ago, a Pasco County, Florida family was torn apart when an out of control driver ran down a group of girls, killing a 5-year-old triplet.Now that family is being tormented all over again.In the years since Delaney Rossman was killed, her surviving sisters have still managed to thrive.“The girls are really good. They are 13 now; very active in the community, doing everything they can to be normal kids,” mother Danielle Malm said.Malm said right after the crash, many well meaning people reached out offering support.“It was wonderful. The condolences, and we appreciated everything that everybody had to say.But one of them has crossed the line.“She’s threatened the girls," Malm said. "She’s threatened us with death. She’s threatened my nieces.”Under different Facebook profiles the person has sent disturbing messages to Danielle and her family.One says “Delaney is DEAD. Hahahah.”Another says “I’m going to harm your family.”Other messages are just too vulgar to show.“The main thing is she’s been fixated on the fact that Delaney died and Gabrielle lived.”Danielle says the person even contacted the girl’s school trying to get more personal information. Blocking the harasser isn’t helping, because the person creates fake profiles posing as family.They send friend requests to everyone on Malm’s list.The family believes the person lives out of the country, but isn’t sure. “It gnaws at you. Where is this woman at? Why is she fixated on us today? Why won’t she just let it go?” she said.Facebook says to report anyone whose behavior is abusive and change privacy settings.Law enforcement can subpoena Facebook to try and track down someone making threats, but they admit, if the person is out of the country, there’s not much they can do. 1794

SHOREWOOD, Wisc. — Just hours before opening night, Shorewood High School canceled the play 'To Kill a Mockingbird.'"Due to concerns regarding potential protests related to the production, we've concluded that the safest option is to cancel the play," a statement from Shorewood School District superintendent Bryan Davis read.Patience Phillips said her three children spoke out against the play."They protested the use of the word in the play," Phillips said.It's the use of the N-word that is said by different actors in the play."The fact that word came out of their mouth multiple times," said a sophomore protestor who did not want to be named. "It sat with me differently. It felt weird." "When you have students of color telling you they are not comfortable with the word, that's a problem,"  Phillips said. The play is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee. The students in the cast say the word is important."Us doing the show without the word, we felt like we couldn't really tell the story," a cast member named ZeZe said."And when using that word we were really trying to be considerate and telling them this is not something to hurt you," another castmember, Nimya, said. "I'm in show, I'm black and I'm not getting offended but I guess that still wasn't clear."Both sides say they did not want to see it come to this."We never asked for the play to be canceled," Phillips said."It's an issue that needs to be talked about everywhere and the fact that it's being canceled, what message is that sending,"  Zeze said.Both the students and the protestors are wondering if the play was chosen back in June, why did it take until opening night for the school district to address it."The District should have done more outreach to engage in dialogue about the sensitivity of this performance with the Shorewood and greater Milwaukee community.  Moving forward, the District will continue to encourage staff and students to engage in meaningful performances surrounding contemporary issues with the appropriate amount of outreach and dialogue," a statement from the school district said.  2185
