Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie issued a statement Friday saying he has asked not to be considered for the White House chief of staff job after meeting with President Donald Trump to discuss the role.Christie met with Trump on Thursday, but two sources familiar with the discussion said no offer had been made."It's an honor to have the President consider me as he looks to choose a new White House chief of staff. However, I've told the President that now is not the right time for me or my family to undertake this serious assignment," Christie said in a statement obtained by CNN but first reported by The New York Times."As a result, I have asked him to no longer to keep me in any of his considerations for this post," Christie added.The former governor was just the latest in a long string of people to discuss the chief of staff position with Trump.Earlier this week, one source close to the White House said that Christie was under consideration for the role. Christie's experience as a prosecutor is seen as a plus given the Mueller investigation and Democrats itching to investigate on the Hill.CNN has previously reported Christie has said he only wanted the role of attorney general and told friends he was offered the Department of Homeland Security secretary position, but did not want it. While chief of staff is not a Cabinet-level position, but it is the top staff role at the White House.There continues to be tension between Christie and the President's son-in-law and key adviser, Jared Kushner. As US Attorney in 2004, Christie prosecuted Kushner's father, Charles Kushner, for tax evasion, witness tampering and illegal campaign contributions. Charles Kushner pleaded guilty and served two years in prison.If Christie is selected, Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, would both report directly to Christie under the existing staff structure.Though on the surface Christie and Kushner have a cordial working relationship, Trump understood that the notion of his son-in-law being OK with reporting to the man who put his father in jail is unlikely. Multiple sources say the Trump children will have the most influence on this decision.Earlier this year, Christie suggested that Trump's family working in the White House was an impediment to his presidency."The situation is made much worse by the fact that we have family members in the White House," Christie said on ABC's "This Week" in March. "In a normal situation, you might terminate a staff member for that reason. (It) becomes a lot more difficult if you're going to be sitting at Thanksgiving dinner with that person. For the first time in history, a beluga whale, which normally lives in arctic waters, was spotted off the coast of Southern California. Now there's an investigation under way to find out where it's going and why.Drone video taken by Gone Whale Watching owner and Captain Domenic Biagini, or "Captain Dom" in San Diego shows the Beluga happily swimming thousands of miles from home.Something like this has never been recorded before. Never has this animal been seen off the coast of San Diego, and never this far south in the Pacific Ocean.Biagini charters sight seers and also takes drone images. He's still in disbelief about the beluga footage he captured.“Imagine I’m outside at my house in Southern California and I walk out and there’s a polar bear walking down the street. It’s that unusual, it does not make any sense that this whale would be here,” Biagini said.He said it all started when a friend of his called about the rare sighting. “She called me on the radio and said, ‘Dom we just saw a 15 foot pearly white animal with no dorsal fin.’ I said, ‘Lisa, are you trying to tell me you have a beluga whale in San Diego waters?’”She wanted his drone expertise because she couldn't quite believe it either. So, he went and they all sat quietly. Watching and waiting for the whale to resurface. After some time it came back up and looked right at the drone.Captain Dom said the moment was emotional. “I started to get the shakes a little bit because I realized I was going to film this, it was going to happen, I was going to get there in time and I realized how historic this moment was - not just for San Diego but for whale watching as a whole, worldwide.”And then he got worried. What was it doing here and so far from home? The beluga whale looked healthy enough and while incredible, now what?Dr. Alissa Deming is the Director of Clinical Medicine at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach, California. “One of the questions as a veterinarian that we have, is why did he decide to leave his habitat? That could be an indication of something wrong, his ability to navigate his environment.”Normally, she said, belugas live in the Cook Inlet of Alaska. They're an endangered species and they're social. They usually travel together.From the looks of the images, Dr. Deming said the whale is older and it is abnormal that he's alone. His skin looks good and he's not thin, so hopefully he's still getting the food he needs.But, the whale is still too far away from home and researchers are concerned, and are now looking for it.“It's definitely searching for a needle in a haystack, a little white needle I guess. A lot of time public reporting and whale watching companies can call things in which is how this was opportunistically sighted. NOAA can put planes up or have the US Coast Guard help on a search but there’s so much water we don’t know which direction this animal went,” Dr. Deming said.The worry is that it's headed south towards Mexico. Waters are warmer there and the Beluga will be harder to track in international waters.“We would like them to stay up in the Alaska region. As much as I love beluga whales, I don’t want to see them off our coast because that means there’s something really wrong with their normal habitat up there in Alaska,” Dr. Deming added.For Captain Dom, who's had an incredible run of luck, spotting the beluga and recently five species of whale and four species of dolphin, it's a dream come true.“It's so beautiful, belugas as white as they are in waters as blue as ours. That’s not something we see here; we don’t have animals that color in water as bright and sunny as ours.”An incredible sight, one that's now recorded as historical, and one that everyone hopes to never see again. Florida is racing to refill its drained gas stations to allow millions of residents to return to their homes following mass evacuations caused by Hurricane Irma.Historic demand for gasoline sparked major gas shortages in the days before Hurricane Irma struck Florida over the weekend.At least 60% of the gas stations in Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Gainesville are without fuel, according to estimates on Monday morning from crowdsourcing platform GasBuddy. Roughly half of the gas stations in Jacksonville, Tampa, West Palm Beach and Fort Myers are also empty after Floridians took to their cars to flee the path of the storm.These widespread gasoline outages threaten to make life even more difficult for Florida residents as they try to return home to see if their property suffered damage from Irma's powerful winds and storm surge.The big key to fixing the gas shortages will be getting Florida's ports reopened to receive fuel shipments. Florida has few refineries of its own, making it reliant on tankers and barges to meet virtually all of its huge appetite for fuel.Hurricane Irma forced the closure of most major Florida ports as of Friday evening. The ports are unlikely to reopen until Tuesday at the earliest, according to Goldman Sachs. That suggests just a "gradual" restocking of Florida's gasoline supplies, the investment bank wrote in a research report on Monday."Without the ports, there's no fuel flowing. It's likely the number of gas outages will rise before they start falling," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.Related: The costliest natural disasters in U.S. historySignificant damage to major ports could further complicate matters. Hurricane Harvey forced the shutdown of the Port of Corpus Christi in Texas for a record six days -- and other ports faced restrictions that delayed shipments.However, Florida appears to have avoided the worst-case scenario that Irma threatened. That suggests Florida's ports may recover faster than Texas ports did."My hunch is those gasoline outage numbers are going to drop very, very fast. By next week, things should be very close to normal," said Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis at the Oil Price Information Service.Port Tampa Bay, the state's largest port, only suffered "very minimal" damage, port officials told CNNMoney. While Port Tampa Bay remains shut to vessels until the Coast Guard approves its reopening, on Monday morning petroleum trucks were approved to resume transporting fuel from the port."It's a small miracle," Paul Anderson, the port's president, said in an interview. "I can't tell you how relieved we are that we're not in a full-blown recovery. It could have been weeks of repairs."Port Everglades, located in Fort Lauderdale, said in a statement on Monday that it is assessing damage and plans to reopen to vessels following approval from the U.S. Coast Guard.
