(KGTV) – The Bing Crosby Season at the Del Mar Racetrack kicks off Saturday with new rules to keep everyone involved healthy and safe.Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Media Director Mac McBride told ABC 10News, "We normally have one large jockey's room. What we've done now is made three jockey’s rooms to thin out the ranks so they're not sitting on top of each other like they do normally.”Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this racing season will be noticeably different than years past. We had no further incidents with our riders,” McBride said.McBride added that even though the club took a big hit with empty stands this summer, folks were still tuning in and bets were still flying high."We thought we might do well, but we had no idea how we were going do that well, and we did. If the county were to fall from the red tier into the yellow tier, outdoor sporting events like theirs could allow them to fill seats."Obviously, we wouldn't look for 40,000 people, but if we had 4,000 or something like that sure, we could bring them in, and space them out. We'd love to bring them back,” said McBride.Another big event in the future is the world-famous Breeder's Cup. (AP) — The owner of a North Carolina speedway advertised "Bubba Rope" for sale on a social media marketplace page days after NASCAR found a noose in the garage stall of Black driver Bubba Wallace. Mike Fulp, the owner of the half-mile 311 Speedway in Stokes County, advertised the rope in a pitch on Facebook Marketplace that read: "Buy your Bubba Rope today for only .99 each, they come with a lifetime warranty and work great.'' DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Del Mar's 2020 racing season kicked off Friday in a way never seen before - without fans. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is hosting the season without people in the stands to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The decision's impact will go beyond the Thoroughbred Club, which stands to lose million this year in ticket sales and concessions. "It's more than just a money making venture for us, because probably this year, we won't make any money," club CEO Joe Harper said. The club reports that it makes a 0 million economic impact to the region in a typical year. That includes 5,150 jobs and a boost to the area hotel occupancy rate from 70 percent to 87 percent. Additionally, area business, including restaurants in Del Mar and neighboring Solana Beach, are losing out on fans pre and post race. Last year, the track averaged 11,264 fans per day. "You kind of don't have a choice, you kind of just got to be proactive and be creative and make it work," said Charles Koll, owner of Viewpoint Brewing Company, across from the fairgrounds. Koll said he would rely on community support, and reach out to jockeys at the fairgrounds, to increase his customer base during this time. Deputies arrested a Palm Beach County bookkeeper Saturday on accusations of stealing money from her employer to pay for a new vehicle.Erma Rios, 26, of suburban West Palm Beach, wrote and signed company checks to purchase a Land Rover from a dealership, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office report.Rios’ boss reported more than ,000 missing from the bank account of his Palm Beach Gardens business in January 2017.Bank records show Rios, a bookkeeper at the business, allegedly wrote out two checks to a used car dealership in December 2016.The first check written out by Rios was a ,000 down payment addressed to the used car dealership for a 2011 Land Rover, an arrest report states. The second check was written out a few weeks later as a final payment to the car dealership for ,000.Deputies interviewing a car salesman report him saying he sold the vehicle to Rios. He said she wrote and signed the checks, and then presented them to his as payment, he said in the report.Court records show a warrant for Rios arrest was signed in April 2017.One year later, she was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail. DEL MAR, CA (KGTV) -- From the starting line to the finish line, opening day to the final race of the season, the Del Mar racetrack prides itself on injury-free races. And with the Summer 2020 season having just wrapped up, the track was ranked as the safest racetrack in the country for the third straight year."It didn't come easily," says Del Mar Thoroughbred Club President Joe Harper. "A few years ago we just woke up to the fact that these horse injuries were climbing, and we had to figure out what was going on."So four years ago, they decided to make some changes. All in the hopes of making the sport safer for the horses, and the jockeys. And it all started with dissecting the track."We found the best guy in the world, the best dirt guy there is, and it was Dennis Moore. He took the track completely apart and told us there were a few problems. We knew it would cost a lot of money, but I said spend all you want."Joe says they also stepped up the evaluations on every racehorse. And for a summer racing season, that means close to 2,000."We go back through our databases, and find what this horses have been doing, where they have been, and how they have been training."The track has also increased the number of veterinarians at the track."In the morning during workouts we've hired more vets to come in and watch the horses. We also have veterinarians go in and look at the horses in the stalls, and the receiving barns. There are vets everywhere."This past season, they had to euthanize one horse injured in a race, as well as two other horses injured while training. "What we're really looking for is zero but compared to where we were, and compared to other tracks, for the last three years we've been the safest track in North America." 1767
