YICHANG, Hubei, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam on the swollen Yangtze River is experiencing another test as flood flows peaking at 56, 000 cubic meters per second, the greatest peak flood of the year, arrived at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, engineers said.The dam buffered the flood by discharging water at a rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, holding up 16,000 cubic meters in a second, they said.The water level of the reservoir behind the dam rose to 158 meters at 8 a.m. Wednesday, about 17 meters under its maximum capacity of 175 meters. Flood waters are sluiced with the water outflux monitored at 40,000 cubic meters per second at Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, central China's Hubei Province, July 20, 2010. BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday concluded his two-day official visit to Bangladesh and started his trip to Laos, the second leg of his four-nation tour.In Dhaka on Tuesday, Xi met separately with the country's opposition leader, parliament speaker and president.In talks with Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh's main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Xi lauded what Zia has done to promote the Sino-Bangladeshi relationship.He said China appreciates very much Bangladesh's precious support on issues concerning China's core interests like the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.He said China supports Bangladesh's economic development and will continue to do its best to help the south Asian country.Zia said China is a close and friendly neighbor of Bangladesh. CHENGDU, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) - A panda cub born Friday afternoon at a breeding center in southwest China is just another panda bear born at the center. What makes her unique is her mother.Jini, the panda mother, gave birth to the female cuba at the age of 17. She is compared to a human in her sixties, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Sichuan Province said in a statement.The female cub weighed 125 grams. She was born at 14:41 p.m., four hours after Jini went into labour. Both the mother and cub are in good health, said the statement.Jini, a resident of Beijing Zoo, was sent to the Wolong center this March for the cub-birth purpose because the research center has developed expertise in breeding techniques.With a 20-year breeding history, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center is home to the world's largest captive panda population. It has helped Beijing Zoo and Chongqing Zoo and many zoos in other countries in breeding and feeding pandas.The new cub is Jini's second. It is the eleventh cub born at the Wolong center this year."Pandas come into heat in the spring and give birth in autumn. This is the main reason for the panda 'baby boom'," said Dang Chunxiang, an expert with the Wolong Center.More than 10 other pandas are expected to give birth over the next one or two months at the Wolong center.Jini delivered her first cub "Qingqing" in 2007 when she was thirteen and a half years old, which was itself rare amongst pandas. She also entered record books with her pregnancy that lasted 324 days. Generally, pandas deliver in 120 -150 days.The length of a panda's pregnancy depends on its health and nutrition level, according to experts.About 1,600 giant pandas are living in the wilds in China. Sichuan Province and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu are the home to most of them. Another 290 pandas are in captive-bred programs worldwide, mostly in mainland China.

CHANGCHUN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Floods have left 63 people dead and 59 missing in northeast China's Jilin Province over the past two months, local authorities said Monday.More than 4 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 700,000 people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, about 62,000 houses have collapsed and 193,000 others have been damaged, along with 1.16 million hectares of cropland having been inundated, the statement said.Direct economic losses were estimated at almost 19 billion yuan (2.8 billion U.S. dollars), it added.In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.In the industrial city of Tonghua, torrential rains have damaged water pipelines, leaving 300,000 people without tap water for two days.Residents have largely relied on bottled water over the past 48 hours as authorities ordered 25 fire trucks to deliver water for domestic purposes aside from drinking to residential communities from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday.About 1,700 tons of water had been delivered by truck, officials said.
