SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- For the first time, we are hearing from the USPS mailman who survived a terrifying brush with death. Univision shared his hospital bed message on his road to recovery. He was on his normal route, making his normal deliveries. But in an instant, Romulo Ruiz's life changed forever. "Those brackets are holding my bones together," Ruiz said in Spanish. He went from totally healthy to bedridden after a horrific workplace accident. On September 12, 2019, the mail carrier was in National City, standing behind his truck. A man suffering a seizure behind the wheel struck Ruiz and pinned him against his vehicle. The wheels behind Ruiz continued to turn until witnesses stopped the car. "We got into the other car, and put it into reverse so we can release the USPS man, and he just fell to the ground," witness Mohammed Farha said. Then they cared for Ruiz until emergency crews took him to the hospital. Two weeks later, Ruiz is at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, recovering from his severe injuries. "The plan is, the doctors will place brackets inside my legs rather than have them outside," Ruiz said, pointing at his legs.Doctors said the road to recovery would be a long and tough one. But they also had good news. They were able to save his legs. "Then I will have normal use of my legs," Ruiz said. The Ruiz family has set up a Gofundme account for his medical expenses. 1409

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Twelve members of San Diego's California Conservation Corps returned home today, after a one-month deployment. On October 10th, 2018, Category 4 Hurricane Michael approached the Florida Panhandle. 155 mile-per-hour winds wiped out Mexico Beach City, Florida. For the last month, Corps members were assisting residents recover from the disaster."We did a lot of damage assessment analysis, temporary roofing, we did debris removal, tree removal," Corpsman Antonio Sanchez said. The CCC is a state agency that offers young adults environment-related jobs. Most of the work is in California, but they can be deployed elsewhere. This was crew leader Rebecca Voorhees' first time out of state."It was very eye-opening because we've seen fires. But not things like this," Voorhees said. "It makes you a little more humble because it's not just you here we're helping. We can help all over the world."But their hearts are always at home, especially on Thanksgiving. "I'm really glad to be home. 30 days is a really long time away from family, and so I'm going to go home and spend some time with them," Sanchez said. Their Thanksgiving vacation lasts only a few days. When they go back into the office on Monday, they will be put back on the "available for deployment" list. Their next stop could be to Northern California's fire-affected areas, where they go back to doing what they do best."We help people," Voorhees said. "To go out there and give everybody our all, to at least give them some sort of feeling that there are people out there are watching them and that care about them."San Diego County's branch of the California Conservation Corps is located in National City. Special counsel Robert Mueller's team on Friday slammed a suggestion by Michael Flynn's lawyers last week that President Donald Trump's former national security adviser lied to the FBI not even a month into his tenure because he was caught off guard when two agents approached him. However, Mueller's office said it would not change its recommendation that Flynn receive no jail time, given he has accepted responsibility for his actions and cooperated with the special counsel.Mueller on Friday also released memos written by the FBI agents, and emphasized that when Flynn lied to them on January 24, 2017, about the substance of his policy conversations with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, he had already lied to several members of Trump's team and was "committed to his false story" that he and Kislyak did not discuss sanctions.Flynn later said he had lied, and will be sentenced next week. 916
