An educational platform that was created to help the nation's teacher shortage is now helping schools backfill during the pandemic."Elevate K-12" offers live instruction, and some districts say it's filling in the gaps for students.Eighth-grade science looks a lot different these days, at least in Louisiana's Caddo Parish Public Schools."We really are almost the districts in one," Caddo Parish Public Schools Chief Academic Officer Keith Burton said.Of the district's 61 schools, 65% are Title 1 schools, meaning they receive federal funds for having large concentrations of low-income students.While the district also has magnet and gate programs, there were some instructional gaps."We really struggled in the area, as most districts do around the nation with needing enough mathematics teachers — especially around the middle and high school area — as well as science and foreign language teachers," Burton said.The district discovered Elevate K-12 two years ago and now use their live teachers for 67 periods."Anywhere from seventh-grade math to Spanish II, Algebra II, in about every corner of our district," Burton said."If you look at the entire U.S. K-12 population, there are 58 million students, of which 50.8 million are in the public school system," said Elevate K-12 CEO and founder Shaily Baranwal. "In that, about 22 million are low-income. The teacher shortage problem specifically plagues the low-income neighborhoods. We work with some states in some zip codes where they can't even find a grade four math teacher."Baranwal grew up in Mumbai, and Elevate K-12 was born out of a business school project."I'm that one Indian that rebelled and said I do not want to do engineering," Baranwal said. "I've always followed my heart, followed my passion. I'm an extreme non-conformist, so I did not follow that path and got an early childhood teaching certification. I then worked as a preschool teacher in India, came to the U.S. to Michigan to get my MBA."She says she created the platform to solve one problem: the nation's teacher shortage."One of the school districts we work with in Georgia — when I was talking to the head of talent there, they did not have an Algebra I teacher for the last four years," Baranwal said. "So, what they had to do was they took the local priest and made the local priest get an Algebra I secondary certification so the local priest could then teach the class."Elevate K-12 now helps large and small school districts around the country, and it just so happens to be in a unique position to help those who have gaps because of the COVID-19 pandemic."This solution was not created to solve a COVID problem," Baranwal said. "The teacher shortage problem has been plaguing the U.S. K112 schools and districts and specifically the low-income neighborhoods for years. What COVID has done for us is accelerated the entire acceptance of live streaming instruction as a solution."They have a network of more than 2,000 teachers, and more than 300 are actively teaching now. All are certified and based in the U.S."We are shaking up the K-12 antiquated system in making people realize that you should not offer a class like German or cybersecurity or science or math, just because you don't have a teacher," Baranwal said. "Take those barriers away and use live-streaming instruction so the teacher can be anywhere in the country. Your kids can be where they are and still learning in a highly engaging format."Burton says Caddo Public Schools hasn't had to use it for reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic as of yet, but they're in a position to, should they need it.He added that the students adjusted quickly, and some even prefer personal and private teacher-student interaction."Now I'm able to leave those classrooms and see students engaged see students learning," Burton said. "Many times, students are saying I'm having conversations with a teacher in Colorado or North Carolina, and those students are loving it. They really are." 3992
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The U.S. Naval Academy has named its first ever African American female brigade commander – Midshipman 1st Class Sydney Barber.The brigade commander is the highest leadership position within the student body and it’s held for a semester. Barber will hold the role this spring semester.Barber will be the 16th woman selected for brigade commander in the 44 years women have been attending the Naval Academy. The first female brigade commander was in the class of 1992.“Earning the title of brigade commander speaks volumes, but the title itself is not nearly as significant as the opportunity it brings to lead a team in doing something I believe will be truly special,” said Barber. “I am humbled to play a small role in this momentous season of American history.”Barber is from Lake Forest, Illinois, and is majoring in a mechanical engineering, with aspirations of commissioning as a Marine Corps ground officer.As a walk-on sprinter and hurdler of the Navy Women’s Varsity Track and Field team, Barber has lettered all three years of competing and is a USNA record holder for the outdoor 4x400m relay.Word of the announcement spread quickly after a social media post by the first Black female to graduate from USNA, Janie Mines. An elderly woman was found by a drone in a corn field in North Carolina after the local sheriff's office investigated a missing person's report.The Randolph County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded Sunday morning and launched a search for the woman using a drone and K9.The search was slowed due to difficult terrain and a corn field. However, the drone pilot was able to locate the missing woman by air within 25 minutes.The sheriff's office said the woman's family expressed their gratitude for the quick response. 556

Fierro runs a shop specializing in motorized vehicles, parts and maintenance northwest of Lake Tahoe. He also carries brightly colored toy replicas of the motorbikes that are a favorite of kids who come to the shop. So he started dropping them off as wrapped birthday presents for tots and teens in the community in mid-April. After he handed out what he had in his story, Fierro got a surprise when he went to re-order. When the distribution center learned what he was doing, they reportedly sent him double his order. As a massive caravan of migrants treks north, US officials have been negotiating with Mexico about how to handle the caravan should it reach the US border.Officials are weighing the legality of certain steps the Trump administration could take and looking at whether any processes could be changed to speed up the removal of migrants who have no legal basis to remain in the US, according to a senior Department of Homeland Security official.The official says the administration hasn't made any "firm decisions" about how to respond if the caravan reaches the border.Among the topics being discussed with Mexico is whether migrants from the caravan could be held there before entering an official port of entry, the DHS official said. The official said this is already being done to some extent, and described this as a more official process of what is known as "metering," when Customs and Border Protection officers keep immigrants in Mexico to limit the flow into the US. This process has been sharply criticized by advocates, who accuse officials of illegally trying to block immigrants from claiming asylum.A spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection referred all questions on the caravan to DHS.Additionally, the US is negotiating with Mexico about whether migrants from the caravan could be deported there, regardless of their country of origin. This process, known as "return to territory," which was included in President Donald Trump's January 2017 executive order on border security, isn't currently carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, because Mexico would need to agree to take foreign nationals back."A lot of these (options) depend on cooperation and discussions with Mexico," the official said.There were 401 claims for asylum from the caravan that made its way to the US last spring, with 374 of those receiving "credible fear referrals," which is the initial screening to ensure a claim could have merit, according to Citizenship and Immigration Services data.ICE has been talking with contractors to discuss the possible need for additional detention capacity, according to the DHS official.
