About 40 percent of babies born in the United States were born to mothers who were not married, in 2015 according to the United Nations. The statistic comes from the UN Population Fund's annual report, which notes that the rate has steadily increased since 1970, when only 10 percent of children were not born to married parents. The trend is consistent with many Western countries — 60 percent of children were born to unmarried parents in the European Union in 2015, an increase from just under 20 percent in1970.The UN notes that while mothers may not waiting for marriage to have children, it's likely that the children are still growing up with two parents. The study notes that in 2010, 1 in 10 European children lived with a single mother, while 1 in 4 in children lived with an unmarried couple. The study also notes that mothers in the United States are waiting longer to have children. According to the UN, the average age of a woman when she gives birth to her first child has risen from about 22 years old in 1970 to about 26 years old in 2014.The study suggests that educated women in developed countries are entering the workforce, but may choose to wait to start a family due to the lack of affordable health care, lack of parental leave or flexible schedules.Read the entire UN study in the window below.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Almost two dozen people became trapped when a storm knocked over a large tree onto a detached garage, which collapsed. The victims were attending a child's birthday party, and had gone inside the garage when the storm started, according to Anne Arundel County Fire Department."It literally sounded like a train coming down the tracks and I looked out the front door and I could see a funnel," said neighbor Dawn Redloff.Redloff describes the severe and sudden storm that hit her neighborhood in Pasadena Sunday afternoon, near Baltimore. Winds knocked down trees, power lines and blew out her front door and window. But nothing was as bad as her neighbor's home."It was heartbreaking," said Redloff. The Anne Arundel County Fire Department officials said a large tree fell on a detached garage during a child’s birthday party, injuring 19 and requiring major rescues."The guys were unreal, cutting the building apart, getting people out of there," said Redloff. When crews arrived, they found six people still trapped inside, all were removed within 45 minutes.According to the county, 19 adults and two children were injured and taken to four area hospitals. The ages of the victims range from 2 to 78 years old. 1219

A pharmaceutical that has already issued a recall for dozens of children's medications is expanding its recall to include more than a thousand additional medications for both humans and animals. The FDA reported earlier this month that King Bio had issued a voluntary recall for about 30 children's medications for a possible microbial contamination. Now, the company is expanding the recall to include more than 1,200 medications for adults, as well as medicine used by vets and pet owners.According to the FDA, King Bio still has not yet received any reports of illness from contaminated medicine. According to the FDA, the use of the drugs could potentially result in increased infections.Customers currently in possession of affected product should discontinue its use immediately and contact King Bio by email or call the company at 866-298-2740. The company also says it is notifying distributors and customers by letter.Below is a list of the contaminated medications. After Andy Cohen recovered from the coronavirus, he wanted to help others recover. He attempted to do what others who have had the coronavirus have been asked to do and give plasma. It turns out he was rejected.Cohen is prohibited from giving plasma because he is gay. He was told that gay men are unable to give blood due to concerns over HIV infection, despite him being HIV negative."They said, 'You can't do it,'" Cohen said on Tuesday’s ABC "The View." "I was hurt. I just thought well this is crazy, technology has come so far.“They're worried about HIV in blood," he added. "But I'm HIV negative. And you can find that out, and then you can test my blood a couple of times before putting it into a system."The FDA recently slightly relaxed its ban on gay men giving blood or plasma, stipulating that men who have had sex with other men are eligible to donate after three months of abstinence. The FDA says that it is possible that convalescent plasma contains antibodies to the coronavirus and might be effective against the infection. Plasma can be collected from recovered individuals only if they are eligible to donate blood. 1142

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. – One small county in California has become a safe haven from the coronavirus. There’s only been one reported case of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, but now, hundreds of visitors from across the country are going there to vacation.“I have never seen this many people here,” said Deanna Jang, the owner of the general store in the county.Business owners like Jang worry the visitors they rely on may bring more problems than profit. “It’s been very good for business, it’s scary though because you just don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Jang.Jang’s family has owned a local general store for decades. She’s nervously watching as cases rise in counties all around hers. She fears a summer shutdown in this tourist town could take her family business with it.“You need to make your year’s income here in two months because the rest of the months you just kind of get by,” she said. “It’s scary, it’s like, ‘What does this mean for next year, and the year after?’ Because we’d have to recover from that.”“It’s sort of a double-edged sword of wanting to get our economy started and worrying that the people who are supporting the economy are going to bring COVID into our community,” said Nichole Williamson of the Alpine County Health Department.Williamson said the worry has locals considering what would typically be unthinkable there. “We have had people who work in the short-term rental business tell us they would not be upset if we limited short-term rentals right now,” she said. One driving concern: the county has few medical resources.“We have no private physicians, no hospitals, and we have a two-day a week family clinic with a nurse practitioner, and she was called up into active duty in the Army,” said Williamson.First responders are also in short supply. “If we had a few law enforcement and a few firefighters exposed, we’d be in a very vulnerable situation,” said Williamson. But with this vulnerability comes a choice: to fear the virus or face it. “You just have to learn to live with it,” said Jang. For hotel owner John Flannigan, there is no choice. He said he is making safety his top priority to make sure his business can stay open. “The economy is in its worst case,” said Flannigan. “It’s worse than 2001 and 2008 combined, times ten, so I don’t think we should be hurting anyone’s ability to make a living. I think we should be figuring out solutions so they can make a living.” Flannigan runs Sorenson’s Resort and has moved all his dining to be outdoor, open air and is making sure guests have space to spread out and social distance. As worried as many community members are, they hope they can keep business going safely.“It’s not about me. It’s not about you. It’s about everyone,” said Jang. 2769
