SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Heavy rain over the last few years has brought an unexpected splash of color to portions of San Diego.For the last month or so, Rainbow Eucalyptus trees have been shedding their bark, revealing a multi-colored trunk."It's outstanding," says Peter Fritsch, who walks by a handful of the trees along Sports Arena Boulevard. "I love the contrast between the gold and the red and the gray and sometimes blue."RELATED: Interactive map: Exploring San Diego's history, culture through street artHorticulture experts say the colors are more pronounced in tropical climates, but here in San Diego, you can still see a rainbow on the trees."As it ages, the stuff that doesn't look as colorful, has been oxidized somewhat, it peels off," says Bradley Brown, a Master Arborist with Tree Life Consulting. "Over time, the new bark will have those varying shades of color."According to the city, there are Rainbow Eucalyptus trees in Balboa Park, Sports Arena, the San Diego Zoo and parts of Mission Bay. They grow fast and have a tendency to fall over in high wind and rain events.But Brown says they can be safe if they're well maintained. He'd like to see more planted throughout the city."It's something we should embrace. It's kind of San Diego's tree," he says. "You see pictures of LA and they have palm trees. Ours is the Eycalyptus. It's those Dr. Seuss forms along the freeway that's something we should embrace." 1829
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hoteliers across San Diego are seeing a significant loss of business from mass cancellations as efforts continue to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. The San Diego Convention Center Corp. reports five conferences have either been canceled or postponed, meaning upwards of 43,000 people would not be coming to San Diego and spending money locally. "The hotel industry has seen a significant drop in business, a significant impact on the workforce," said Namara Mercer, who chairs the San Diego Hotel Motel Association. "Anecdotally the shifts are being cut, people aren’t going to work if occupancy is not high."LIST: San Diego events, schools that have changed plans due to the coronavirusAs conferences cancel, large convention hotels downtown are finding themselves with hundreds, if not thousands, of unexpected empty rooms. That can be costly also to other hotels. "What do they do? They reduce their rates - the big convention hotels - and then they start taking away business from all of us who are in outlying areas," said Bob Rauch, CEO of RAR Hospitality, which owns three San Diego County hotels and manages nine others.Rauch said cancellations were up 15 percent last week, and he expects that to increase to 25 percent this week. He says he expects it to peak next week at 35 percent before he expects things to calm down. As of now, he has not cut staff hours, but he said things could change if the loss of business continues to persist. "If this worsens over the next couple of weeks, we will create some kind of shared pain program," said Rauch, adding that it would likely involve cutting hours across the board so no employees are laid off. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eighty-five people linked to the Sinaloa Cartel were charged Thursday for their roles in a massive East County drug trafficking network.Eight indictments were unsealed in a San Diego federal court charging the alleged members with federal drug trafficking, money laundering, and firearms offenses, according to the Office of the United States Attorney Southern District of California.Investigators executed more than a dozen search warrants Thursday in a coordinated takedown of locations around the East County. Investigators discovered at least four pounds of methamphetamine and two firearms.The networks reportedly supplied a variety of controlled substances — like meth, heroin, and fentanyl — to distributors around Southern California, and then laundered tens of thousands of dollars in narcotics proceeds back to Sinaloa Cartel traffickers in Mexico.As of 1 p.m., 47 of the 85 charged were in federal or state custody. Some of the charges carry potential 20-year sentences and millions in fines.“Today we sent a message to drug traffickers in our community. If you sell drugs in San Diego, we will find you and prosecute you to the full extent of the law,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer.Authorities used surveillance, wire taps on phones, and undercover agents to obtain evidence and track encrypted communication by members through services like WhatsApp and Signal.Through wiretaps, investigators seized about 175 pounds of methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl; about ,000 in cash, multiple firearms; and a 2020 Cadillac Escalade valued at 5,000.Defendants will start to be arraigned Friday. 1638

This time of year also can signal a slowdown in the real estate market - and an opportunity for buyers.Germaine LaValade took advantage, and is about to own his first home. He’s in escrow for a four-bedroom home in North Pacific Beach, listed for .17 million. LaValade, a software engineer, said a big reason the seller chose him was because the sale would close before the end of the year for tax purposes.“Because we are renters right now we didn’t have any house to sell to buy this one,” LaValade said.A motivated seller is just one of the advantages a homebuyer may have in these winter months - far removed from peak summer season. Another help - interest rates, which have been on the rise, tend to soften as activity slows nationwide.“We’re seeing a lot of prices are coming down from the all-time highs that they were,” said San Diego realtor Gary Kent. “We’re probably off as much as 5 percent from the peak, peak, peak of the market.”But prices are still high in San Diego County.
