ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 9 (Xinhua)-- Premier Wen Jiabao has urged rescuers to race against time to search survivors after catastrophic mudslides hit a northwest China county and left nearly 1,300 people missing Sunday.At least 127 people have been confirmed dead and 1,294 others were reported missing in rain-triggered mudslides in Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, early Sunday morning."For those who were buried under the debris, now it's the most crucial time to save their lives," Wen stressed during a meeting held at the county government late Sunday night.He said the search and rescue work must not be halted as long as the possibility for finding survivors still exists.He instructed the rescuers to locate places where most people were buried or trapped and to clean the sludge as soon as possible.Wen also demanded that traffic, power supply and telecommunication in the county should be resumed as soon as possible."And people who have been evacuated should be taken good care of," Wen stressed.
BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) - The Chinese education ministry Tuesday ordered education authorities and schools in flood-hit regions to ensure the safety of students against floods and flood triggered disasters.The ministry ordered all necessary measures be taken to guarantee the safety of students, including suspending classes, rescheduling exams, relocating classrooms to safer areas, and other actions.Also, according to the ministry, school buildings in flood-hit regions could only be put back into use after examination and approval by authorities, so that no student is endangered by the possible collapse of flood-soaked school buildings.Rainstorms and the floods that followed left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River, as of Tuesday afternoon.The education ministry also cautioned against accidents involving students during their summer vacations, such as drowning while swimming and contracting food poisoning.

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The State Administration of Civil Service Thursday announced a plan to select personnel for central government organizations from the grass-roots level.In all, 30 civil servants will be selected and assigned to 11 ministry-level organizations such as the ministries of foreign affairs, education, agriculture and culture.Civil servants working in government organizations in the province, city, county and village levels can apply for these posts.However, those at the provincial level will have to have two-years of grassroots work experience while village-level civil servants must have at least three-years of work experience.The written test and interview for the selection will be held in September.According to a statement released by the administration, the plan aims to create a system of cultivating civil servants from the frontline and grass-root levels for optimizing the structure of civil servants in central government departments.
