Why are some Democrats opposed to the move?A long-standing stereotype of sanctuary city measures is that Democrats only, and always, support the designation. But that's not always the case.Tucson's mayor and city council members, all of whom are Democrats, oppose Prop 205 because they fear losing state and federal funding. They and others in Arizona say Tucson is already a welcoming place for immigrants, and writing it into law would only jeopardize the city. A 2010 immigration law in the state, known as SB1070, prohibits sanctuary cities in Arizona and requires police to verify the immigration status of anyone suspected of being in the country illegally when enforcing other laws. A lot of the law wasn't upheld by the courts, but the requirement asking officers to check immigration papers is still in effect.Approving Proposition 205 could put the state in jeopardy with regards to funding because of this law, according to some city officials."They say trying to enact tougher limits would run afoul of SB1070 and other state laws, endangering the state funds that make up a massive chunk of Tucson’s city budget," 1127

While the city has worked on finding housing opportunities for the homeless, the decision also comes in the wake of a deadly hepatitis A outbreak, which has largely impacted the homeless. Each facility will have more than 100 beds, with restrooms and showers. Service providers will also be on site at all three locations, offering alcohol and substance abuse counseling and job search training. 395
WRTV shared our findings with Mothers Against Drunk Driving spokeswoman Annie Baker, who said arrest numbers were not concerning.“We know checkpoints are not for high arrest rates,” Baker said. “We aren’t looking for huge numbers. We are looking for the publicity of the checkpoint and to inform the community and send a message that it’s not going to be tolerated.”Baker said sobriety checkpoints work to stop drunk driving.“I think that’s why we see them so often,” said Baker. “We know if they’re consistent and publicized well, then they are effective.”Baker said publicizing OWI checkpoints deters people from drinking and driving in the first place.“It reminds people to continue to think ahead and make those arrangements prior because they know that law enforcement is out,” said Baker. “I think that’s a big misconception about the purpose of the checkpoints, and it’s kind of hush hush like it’s a secret or something. We want people to know so they don’t make a bad decision that night.”Baker said arrests are just one part of a bigger picture in changing behavior. The biggest cost of sobriety checkpoints is staffing — typically agencies have at least a dozen officers working four hours for a total cost of about ,000 to ,000 each checkpoint.Mothers Against Drunk Driving says they are a good use of taxpayer money.“I think so if it saves lives it is worth it,” Baker said. 1405
While the wedding itself will be a public affair, the choice of honeymoon destination is a closely-guarded secret. There's already a long list of locations being suggested as possible destinations, including Botswana (where the pair vacationed early in their relationship) and the Seychelles (where William and Catherine spent their first days as a newly-married couple). 376
