SAN CLEMENTE (CNS) - A woman was arrested today for allegedly collecting funds and items she claimed would benefit firefighters battling the Holy Fire and then keeping them for herself.Ashley Bemis, 28, of San Juan Capistrano allegedly "presented herself on social media as the wife of a firefighter working on the fire line of the August 2018 Holy Fire in Riverside and Orange counties," according to Orange County Sheriff's Department Public Information Manager Carrie Braun."On multiple social media pages, Bemis posted pictures of herself and her fictitious firefighter husband asking for donations," Braun said. "She solicited for items she claimed would benefit the firefighters working alongside her husband battling the blaze that ultimately burned more than 23,000 acres in the Cleveland National Forest and destroyed 18 structures."The posts led people and businesses in San Clemente to make donations and Bemis is suspected of taking more than ,000 in cash and items such as socks, sports drinks, water and camping equipment, Braun said."A captain with a local fire agency became suspicious of Bemis' requests, and contacted the Orange County Sheriff's Department to investigate," Braun said. "Investigators interviewed victims and obtained search warrants for Bemis' vehicle, residence and garages. They recovered donated items consistent with the items Bemis collected intended as donations for the Holy Fire."Investigators believe Bemis concocted a phony story, complete with a fictitious husband, "with the intention of soliciting donations to defraud victims," Braun said. "They also became aware, through additional social media posts from members of the community, of past (allegedly) fraudulent activity by Bemis, including multiple prior faked pregnancies in an attempt to illegally obtain money from unsuspecting victims."The investigation led to warrant being issued for Bemis' arrest. She was arrested and was booked on suspicion of felony grand theft, second-degree burglary, witness intimidation and making false financial statements, Braun said.Bemis was being held in lieu of ,000 bail, Braun said. 2138

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 20-year-old man was arrested today on suspicion of attempted murder following a SWAT standoff after a shooting in the City Heights area that sent two people to the hospital, police said. The shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Rowan Street at 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department. When officers arrived on scene, they found a 21-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound to his head, Brown said. The victim directed officers to his companion, who was seated in a nearby car and also appeared to have been shot. The officers provided aid to the victims, who were later taken to a hospital, Brown said. The man who called for help is expected to survive his injuries, but the other victim was not expected to survive.Homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate. ``While the investigation has just begun, detectives have learned that the two men arrived in San Diego from Central California to meet with a male at 1700 Rowan Street,'' Brown said. ``It is believed the men were meeting to conduct a marijuana transaction. The suspect shot both victims and fled to a nearby residence.''A SWAT team and emergency negotiators arrived and attempted to talk the suspect into surrendering peacefully, the lieutenant said. After 1:30 a.m. Saturday, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. Matatoa Samoata, 20, was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of two felony counts of attempted murder and one count of grand theft, according to jail records. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 4.The victims have been identified, but their names were not released, Brown said. Both victims reside in Bakersfield. 1710

SAN DIEGO – Delegates at the California Democratic Party State Convention failed to endorse any candidates for U.S. Senate, governor and attorney general, denying Dianne Feinstein endorsement in her bid to stay seated in the U.S. Senate. The indecision sent shock through the party with 54 percent of the vote going to state Senate leader Kevin de Leon and 37 percent for Feinstein."The outcome of today's endorsement vote is an astounding rejection of politics as usual, and it boosts our campaign's momentum as we all stand shoulder to shoulder against a complacent status quo," de Leon said late Saturday in a prepared statement.Still, Feinstein holds a sizable lead over de Leon in statewide polls.Meanwhile, the gubernatorial vote was split between Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom. State Treasurer John Chiang, former state Superintendent Delaine Eastin and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The convention wraps up Sunday at the San Diego Convention Center with delegates expected to adopt the 2018 party platform. 1039
