(KGTV) -- Since 2013, Kitchens for Good has helped fight hunger across San Diego by working with local food backs, created programs to help those with troubled pasts, and now they're adding a baking option to their apprenticeship program.After Kitchens for Good launched their culinary apprenticeship program five years ago, it has led to both success and opportunity. "It's an amazing program here, we are so lucky to be here doing this," said an instructor for their baking program. They added in a baking option to their existing culinary program that launched this month.Their apprenticeships aren't your normal "bake and set" classes. They hope students like Kenneth Donato, take what they learn inside to lead better lives. "Just 3 months ago I was living under a bridge, now my wife and I we're living inside. I'm going to school, I work here, and help them out," said Donato.Directors for the nonprofit said out of their 300 apprentices, 85% landed jobs upon completion. Baking instructor Helen Coyne added, "I see so many opportunities in baking and pastry, and I'm so excited for them to have that." (KGTV) --There is another effort to tackle our housing problems in California in the form of Proposition 21.Prop. 21, also known as the Rental Affordability Act, would allow local governments to have more authority over rent control on residential properties over 15 years old.It would exempt individuals who own two homes or less from new rent-control policies.Kimberly Ellis has been renting her current Santee apartment for three years. With rent—plus bills and food—she said everything “is just so expensive.”With her husband facing medical issues and her rent increasing every year, she said rent control is needed. “I live on a budget. It’s hard when the rent goes up,” Ellis said.A television ad for Yes on 21 is sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. The organization has committed major funding to the cause.Pt. Loma Nazarene University’s Chief Economist Lynn Reaser said the advertisement “doesn’t even tell us what Proposition 21 even does.”She clarified it for voters.“It allows local governments to set their own rent control measures that would be different from what the state now has, which basically caps rent increases at 5 percent plus rate of inflation,” Reaser said. Thousands of visitors are expected in the Hillcrest and Balboa Park neighborhoods for a weekend of celebration and political purpose. The theme for 2019 is Stonewall 50: A Legacy of Liberation, marking the 1969 Stonewall Riots when members of the LGBTQ community fought back against “legal oppression.” “This Pride we will highlight the Stonewall generation, their activism, and all that our community has gained through their efforts, as we challenge ourselves to reflect on our own role in that legacy, and how, if we approach our own individual legacies with intention, we can build on their successes to leave a better world for those who come next,” said San Diego Pride Executive Director Fernando Z. (KGTV) - The city of Oceanside is moving forward with new medical marijuana regulations.Oceanside City Council approved regulating the manufacturing of medical marijuana and cultivation, but continued barring new dispensaries.The proposal allows the testing, cultivation and sale of medical marijuana within city limits.Oceanside currently allows the delivery and consumption of medical marijuana in private residences.City leaders had been eying the measure since the end of last year when they formed an ad-hoc committee for the cannabis regulations.The proposal will go back for a second reading, and would go into effect after 30 days from then.   669
