The Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) is facing a huge undertaking as COVID-19 vaccines roll out to the general public.More than 418,000 healthcare workers and 10 million patients will eventually get the COVID-19 vaccine through the VA.The department received 73,000 doses of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine this week, and residents and staff at long term communities run by the department are first in line to be inoculated. There are about 17,500 veterans living in VA long-term care facilities across the country, and several thousand more work in those centers. The vaccine could not have arrived sooner for those staff members and patients."I know a lot of VA medical centers are going through COVID surges right now, alongside with their communities," said Dr. Jane Kim, the Chief Consultant for Preventive Medicine at the VA.Most vaccines are mandatory for military members. For now, the COVID-19 vaccine is still voluntary. That's likely due to the limited supply of the vaccine and because it's only under Emergency Use Authorization right now.Still, veteran doctors want to reassure their patients."I got the vaccine yesterday," Kim said. "I had a sore arm yesterday, but my arm feels good today. I feel fine today. I would recommend this vaccine to my family and also my patients when it's available for them and it's their turn."More than 5,500 veteran patients and 87 VA staff members have died of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. That doesn't include state-run veteran's homes. The VA is not responsible for providing COVID-19 vaccines to those state-run veteran's homes. 1596

The coronavirus continues to play havoc on college football teams throughout the United States as 15 Division 1 FBS games have been postponed or canceled for this weekend.Of the 15 contests, six involved AP Top 25 teams, including No. 1-ranked Alabama, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 5 Texas A&M. No conference has been impacted more than the SEC, which postponed four of its seven games scheduled for Saturday. The most anticipated matchup of the weekend, top-ranked Alabama versus defending national champion LSU, was postponed on Tuesday after LSU reported multiple COVID-19 cases.Maryland, who was scheduled to take on Ohio State, reported eight COVID-19 cases among its players. For schools with multiple coronavirus cases, a key issue is contact tracing and quarantining close contacts of those positive with the virus. The CDC recommends that anyone who has been within six feet for 15 minutes of someone infected with the virus to quarantine for up to two weeks.Texas A&M athletics direct Ross Bjork said contact tracing was a significant factor in postponing its game against Tennessee this weekend.“The nature of away game travel (flights, meals, lodging, locker room, etc.) naturally leads to an increase in the number of student-athletes, coaches and staff who meet the criteria for mandatory quarantine based on contact tracing guidelines,” Bjork said in a statement. “We are asking everyone around our university community to stay vigilant and follow all of the safety protocols and best practices as we approach the end of the fall sports seasons.”Here are the games postponed or canceled this weekend:No. 1 Alabama vs LSUNo. 3 Ohio State vs MarylandNo. 5 Texas A&M vs TennesseeNo. 12 Georgia vs MissouriNo. 15 Coastal Carolina vs TroyNo. 24 Auburn vs Mississippi StateMemphis vs NavyAir Force vs WyomingUL-Monroe vs Arkansas StateGardner Webb vs CharlotteNorth Texas vs UABRice vs Louisiana TechPittsburgh vs Georgia TechCalifornia vs Arizona StateUtah vs UCLA 1988

The Danish government said they plan to kill 15 million minks after the animals spread a coronavirus mutation to humans. In a press release, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that a mutation of the virus has already spread from the infected minks to 12 people in North Jutland.Frederiksen added that the virus could spread to other countries and "carry the risk that the upcoming vaccine will not work as it should.""Denmark has a responsibility to our population," Frederiksen said in the news release. "With the mutation that has now been established, we now also have a greater responsibility for the rest of the world. A mutated virus risks being spread from Denmark to other countries. Therefore, we must take the situation on the Danish mink farms extremely seriously." 786

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued recommendations for those looking to receive vaccinations during the pandemic. The CDC said that anyone who needs a vaccine, they recommend getting them at a medical home to "ensure that patients receive other preventive services that may have been deferred during the COVID-19 pandemic.""However, vaccination at locations outside the medical home may help increase access to vaccines in some populations or situations, particularly when the patient does not have a primary care provider or when care in the medical home is not available or feasible," the CDC said. "Regardless of vaccination location, best practices for storage and handling of vaccines and vaccine administration should be followed. In addition, information on administered vaccines should be documented (e.g., through the state-based immunization information system [IIS], patient’s electronic medical record, client-held paper immunization records) so that providers have accurate and timely information on their patients’ vaccination status and to ensure continuity of care in the setting of COVID-19-related disruptions to routine medical services."The CDC said that if your vaccines are due or overdue, they should be "administered according to the recommended CDC immunization schedules during that visit."If you are a child or an adolescent, the CDC recommends that healthcare providers should contact parents of those who have missed well-child visits and schedule an in-person appointment. If you are pregnant, the CDC says if an appointment for your vaccinations is delayed, they should be received on the next in-person appointment. For adults, the CDC said healthcare providers should ensure that steps are taken that their patients receive vaccines according to the Standards for Adult Immunization Practice."Older adults and adults with underlying medical conditions are particularly at increased risk for preventable disease and complications if vaccination is deferred," the CDC said.If you believe you have COVID-19, the CDC says vaccinations should be postponed until you are feeling better. 2141

The first round of the NFL Draft got underway Thursday evening and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield was selected as the first overall draft pick by the Cleveland Browns. Mayfield will likely take over as Cleveland's starting quarterback in the fall after the Browns finished the 2017 season with a winless 0-16 record. Mayfield was a three-year starter at Oklahoma after starting one season for Texas Tech. He threw for 131 touchdowns over his four collegiate years, which is fourth all time in NCAA Division I history. According to most NFL Draft experts, five college quarterbacks will likely be selected in the first round on Thursday. The group includes USC's Sam Darnold, Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, Wyoming's Josh Allen, UCLA's Josh Rosen and Louisville's Lamar Jackson.  807
