At least not as much as it has in recent years.Acreage burned through Sunday is down 90% compared to the average over the past five years and down 95% from last year, according to statistics from the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.The stats are good news for a state that has seen terrifyingly destructive and deadly blazes the past two years, but the worst of those fires occurred in the fall.The precipitous drop could be due to the amount of precipitation the state received during a winter of near-record snowfall and cooler-than-average temperatures — so far.Scott McLean, a spokesman for CalFire, said the state hasn't dried out as quickly this year and the temperatures haven't been as consistently hot. LORAIN, Ohio - A family has filed a lawsuit against the Lorain County School District in Lorain, Ohio after their daughter was wrongly accused of bringing drug-laced candy to lunch in September and suspended.Shannon Ciotti and her daughter have filed a suit naming the district, the Lorain City Board of Education, every board member, the district CEO and the Lorain Police Department.Ciotti said her daughter was suspended immediately from Southview Middle School after being accused of bringing tainted candy, before any test was ever conducted on the candy. The director of out of school suspension cited Ciotti’s daughter with a level three violation – possession of marijuana edibles.The lawsuit states a 10-day suspension turned into 21 because the police department took so long to test the candy. The box of Milk Duds was not properly tagged as evidence and sat on a shelf in the police department, “untested and abandoned,” the court filing states. It was only after the crime lab found out from Ciotti that the evidence was improperly tagged that they tested the candy.The family also contacted the Hershey Company, who tested the batch of Milk Duds for illegal substances, the suit states.Hershey came to the same conclusion that Lorain police eventually did: the candy contained no illegal substances.According to the lawsuit, the teen has been harassed and ridiculed since returning to Southview Middle School. Fellow students have called her names like “pothead,” and a teacher allegedly mocked the girl, saying, “I hope you’re not planning on exchanging candy. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The two Southern California desert communities rocked by last week's powerful earthquakes may have sustained as little damage as they did because they have no tall buildings and many of the homes in one are fairly new and were built to stricter earthquake standards.California's Seismic Safety Commission Chairman Michael Gardner said during the agency's Thursday meeting that the tallest building he knows of in the Mojave Desert towns of Ridgecrest and Trona is the three-story Ridgecrest hospital.The region was struck by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake on July 4, followed by a 7.1 temblor the next day.Ridgecrest, whose 28,000 residents include many who work at the nearby China Lake Naval Weapons Center, is about 150 miles (241.4 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.The nearby mining town of Trona, with a population of about 2,000, was harder hit. Commissioners noted many of its buildings are older.Authorities estimated the damage to both towns at about 0 million, although that could go up as buildings continue to be evaluated.Commissioner Kit Miyamoto said that as inspectors entered some buildings they discovered serious damage to ceilings and other areas that they couldn't see from the outside."Three buildings from the exterior appeared to be fine and probably safe for entry, but upon further investigation the roofs had actually collapsed," he said, adding inspectors may find others in that condition.Gardner said commissioners are also waiting for more information from the Naval base, where security is tight.Miyamoto noted that many of Ridgecrest's homes were built in the 1980s and '90s of more earthquake-resistant materials."As we know, newer California houses hold up really well," he said.That was not so much the case in Trona, where many fireplace chimneys collapsed and other damage was recorded.Buildings flooded when water heaters toppled over and ruptured gas lines sparked fires, and roads, highways and sidewalks also buckled.Trona also lost all of its water for several days when a pipeline carrying it from Ridgecrest ruptured. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lawyers for the family of a black man killed by police in a busy Southern California parking lot said Monday that an autopsy found he was shot 10 times and died from choking on his own blood.The autopsy concluded that 26-year-old Diante Yarber died of asphyxiation and that had he been given medical treatment, he would have had a chance at surviving his wounds, attorney S. Lee Merritt said at a news conference.The autopsy was conducted by a private medical examiner at Merritt's request. An autopsy by San Bernardino County authorities has not been released and it's unclear whether it's been finished.Merritt, who is planning on filing a civil rights lawsuit in the case this week, said the private autopsy found that Yarber had wounds to his chest, back and arms and that he wasn't given medical treatment for "a great deal of time.""The injuries are consistent with defensive wounds ... as he was shielding himself and trying to escape the onslaught of bullets," Merritt said.Merritt did not respond to a message seeking a copy of the autopsy report. Barstow police officers fatally shot Yarber on April 5 in a Walmart parking lot in the Mojave Desert city, about halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.At the time police said Yarber reversed into a police car, then accelerated toward officers and hit a second police car, prompting officers to fire.The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the shooting, has said Barstow officers responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle believed Yarber was wanted for a crime involving a stolen car.Merritt disputes the account of the shooting by police, saying Yarber's car was barely moving.
