SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An 86-year-old woman, with underlying health conditions and who had been vaccinated, is the latest flu death in San Diego.The San Diego woman died on Dec. 1 from influenza A and had been vaccinated this season, the County Health and Human Agency said. Officials did not specify what underlying conditions the woman had suffered.This flu season, seven San Diegans have died from the flu. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After receiving criticism from the Chicano Federation, UCSD Health officials met with the group Friday to review plans to recruit volunteers for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial.The Chicano Federations sent the following statement Thursday after hearing about UCSD’s plans to enroll approximately 1,600 volunteers to participate in the AstraZeneca COVIS-19 Phase 3 clinical trial:“Once again, the burden of COVID-19 is falling on communities of color. It is unfair that underserved communities who have the least access to information are now being targeted to participate in an experimental vaccine. This tactic, unfortunately, does not come as a surprise given that this country has a history of using people of color for experimental medical treatments. We did meet with UC San Diego, and we are going to be working with them in making sure that our community receives the education around these clinical trials.”Maldonado said community outreach would ensure that volunteers have all of the information necessary to make informed decisions.“When outreach is done in a way that is respectful to the community that different then some of the other approaches that other clinical trials are taking,” she said.UCSD made it clear that this trial is entirely voluntary, and consent forms will be available in English and Spanish.“I would just encourage anyone who has any questions or who might also be confused about the different trials and what’s going on, to contact the community-based organization that they know and trust to get some more information,” said Maldonado.The trial is expected to begin on Sept. 8. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego public figure is speaking out after being hit three times by distracted drivers over 8 years.Monica Zech is the Public Information Officer for the City of El Cajon. Her passion is public safety, specifically behind the wheel. She started as a Traffic Reporter in 1984 and had a 30-year career in broadcasting. She immediately found out, through reporting on first responders, how many crashes were preventable. "When my father was hit about eight years after that, when I started lecturing, then the DUI issue became prevalent," Zech said her father was walking across the street in a marked cross-walk when a drunk driver hit him in 1992.August 29th, 2011 a distracted driver ran a red light slamming into her. The crash was so violent surgeons told her she should've been paralyzed, "it was shocking to hear that. They said is this your MRI? Are you sure? I said I'm sure that's my MRI. They said well we're surprised you're sitting here, you should be paralyzed. We have patients with the same MRI and they're in a wheelchair."She now has a titanium plate that straightens her spine and protects her in case she is in a future crash.The next crash was in traffic on I-5, February of 2017. "I kept noticed his head bobbing down, looking down, I realized he was on his cell phone and wham! He hits me from behind," she said.Tuesday she was hit from behind again. This time she says she stopped at a red light about to turn onto I-8 Eastbound from La Mesa Boulevard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman bought a puppy for her kids. Four hours later, it was dead. Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to local veterinarians who say that a new state law is, in part, to blame. “It was beautiful. It was sweet,” says Enjoli Spaulding of her former Golden Retriever puppy. The San Diego mother of three had been looking for a family Golden Retriever for some time. She checked with formal breeders but the prices were high. “Those dogs are about ,500, minimum,” she tells us. Then she found an adorable Golden Retriever puppy for 0 on a buy-sell website called Recycler.Spaulding, along with her mother, Kathy Pardini, met the seller in a parking lot.“[The puppy] seemed like it had been very loved,” says Pardini. Spaulding adds, “She gave me a vaccination record. She also gave me a bill from the vet when the dog had a physical exam.” The deal appeared to be legitimate, so Spaulding handed over the cash, and they went to surprise her son at school. “He said, ‘Mom, you got me a dog! My very own dog!’ He was just over the moon,” she tells us.The family took the puppy home and played with it in the backyard. “My daughter got her tea set ready,” says Spaulding. Then the playtime took a terrifying turn. Parvovirus suddenly wreaked havoc on the puppy’s bowels and it was bleeding. The puppy was rushed to the hospital, where he was put down. The family was devastated. “The vet told me the dog had been sick for a long time. This was not a new situation,” she tells 10News.“It was surreal,” adds Pardini.Spaulding says the seller would not return her calls. She also discovered that the puppy’s paperwork from the seller was apparently forged. “It was a completely fake document,” she says. She has since filed a police report.Dr. Scott DiLorenzo is a veterinarian and owner of Escondido's Animal Urgent Care. “We have seen an uptick in these cases,” he tells 10News. He says a new California law is part of the problem. It bans pet stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits, unless they come from shelters or rescues. The law was intended to stop harmful breeding operations like puppy mills. Yet now, consumers aren't always sure where to turn to for specific breeds that they want. “There's just limited sources for people to go out and get the breeds that they want so they're turning to unvetted websites,” adds Dr. DiLorenzo.The American Kennel Club writes, in part, to 10News, "The uptick in this trend corresponds precisely with the implementation of California's new ban on the sale of purpose bred pets at regulated pet shops…”San Diegan Lisa Hexom says she got scammed with a sick dog, too. “I don't want to lose him,” she cries from the veterinary hospital. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An autopsy report released on Trevor Heitmann, the teenager known as "McSkillet" on YouTube, is revealing details about what happened before he crashed his vehicle on Interstate 805.The report says Heitmann’s parents called the police to request a psychiatric evaluation stating, “On August 23, the decedent's parents contacted the local police department to request a psychiatric evaluation but were informed that the evaluation could not be performed as the decedent had not broken any laws."The statement means hours before Trevor Heitmann drove his car down the freeway killing two people, police were at his house.RELATED: Autopsy details mental state of McSkillet before deadly I-805 crash"Even though police are trained to identify mental health issues and mental illness issues they just can't take someone off the streets unless there is such conduct to warrant it,” said attorney Kenneth Rosenfeld.Rosenfeld, who has no connection to this case, explained law enforcement does have the ability to detain someone using the 51-50 law. It would allow someone to be involuntarily detained for a psychiatric hold for up to 72 hours.Conduct in many cases needs to be observed. Just saying someone is acting out of nature isn't always good enough.RELATED: YouTuber's family releases statement, offers condolences to crash victims“Police officers are not psychologists or psychiatrists,” he said. “They do their best, but usually when someone’s conduct or behavior is so erratic, that’s when they can factor into the idea that this is probably someone worth taking it.”Police dispatch logs show units arriving at the Heitmann home just after 8:00 a.m., Aug. 23, the morning of the crash.At 9:14 a.m., notes say, “based on statements from parents, there was no credible threat and Subject did not meet 5150 criteria. Parents advised if we went in house to ask subject if he would voluntarily go to hospital, subject may become violent. We did not encounter subject.
