According to a monthly jobs report, the U.S. added 1.4 million jobs in August as the unemployment rate fell from about 10% to 8.4%.The unemployment rate is the lowest it has been since government-mandated shutdowns due to he coronavirus took place in March. Prior to the pandemic, unemployment sat at about 3.5%While Thursday's reports continue several months of positive economic news, some analysts believe the gains could be short-lived without another round of stimulus from Congress. Several provisions from the CARES Act, including increased unemployment benefits and bailouts for the airline industry, are already expired or are scheduled to expire in the coming weeks. This story is breaking and will be updated. 727

About 15% of U.S. households with school-aged children don’t have a high-speed internet connection, according to a study done by Pew Research. In Detroit, that number is much higher. As school and work continue online, the digital divide is becoming more obvious in neighborhoods without high-speed internet.“Even before the pandemic, digital access was a huge challenge in the city of Detroit,” Raquel Castaneda-Lopez, a City Councilwoman in Detroit, said.“In Southwest Detroit, some people might not have internet,” said Anderson Walworth, the Chief Network Engineer for the Equitable Internet Initiative. Walworth led a team on to the roof of a building in Southwest Detroit to install internet infrastructure. It will help provide public internet access for everyone in the surrounding community.“A hotspot install at the Michigan Welcome Center in Southwest Detroit,” Walworth explained. Why is this necessary, especially on a 95 degree day in the middle of summer?“It's about 28% of folks that don't have internet access at all in the city of Detroit,” Castaneda-Lipez said. “We can't just assume people have access to the internet, or they have the resources to pay the monthly subscription to buy it from Comcast or wherever.”Because of COVID-19, many school-aged children have been forced to work and learn online, and that could continue for part of the next school year.“The coronavirus, most everybody’s working from home. School is from home,” said Norma Heath, a resident of Detroit. Before October 2019, she did not have a reliable internet connection. Now, a futuristic-looking teepee sits beside her house.“People pass by and they’re like, what’s that? It’s good to see something different,” she explained. The solar internet teepee was installed by the Equitable Internet Initiative and it’s partner organizations.“We pay for it,” Heath explained. “It's a nominal fee, you can afford it.”It serves nearby neighbors as well. “Around 50 or more,” Heath said. “Kids over there come over here and sit down and do their homework.”Whether it’s too expensive or just not available, the Equitable Internet Initiative, or EII, has been working on filling the gaps in internet access for years.“We prioritize homes that have no access to the internet at all, homes that have a low quality connection,” said Janice Gates, the Director of the Equitable Internet Initiative. “When the pandemic first happened and there was no access to the internet, all of the school children, their access to online learning didn't exist.”The EII is a partnership with three community organizations in Detroit, and the Detroit Community Technology Project.“We believe communication is a fundamental human right,” said Katie Hearn, the Director of the Detroit Community Technology Project. They all work together to get Detroit online. They’ve been doing so for years, all with funding from foundations and individuals.“It's been an issue, a known issue for a long time, whether you're looking at the schools or at access to gainful employment,” Hearn said. ”The COVID pandemic has shown a really bright light back on the digital divide.”While more players have come in to address the problem recently, including several fundraising efforts, EII continues doing its work in Detroit’s most under-served neighborhoods.“The digital divide is much more than a technology issue, it's much more than a policy issue, it really is people at the core,” Hearn explained.“I think there's a lot more work to do,” Castaneda-Lopez said. “In a way it's pushing us to be more creative about how we address this problem.” 3598

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- As firefighters work towards 100% containment in the Valley Fire, business owners are cleaning up the damage left behind by the flames. Alpine Dog Ranch is a vacation ranch for dogs to say while their owners are away. When the Valley Fire started, the ranch's owner, Thomas MacKinnon, was taking care of nine dogs, including his own. He quickly rushed to get them all into a van and tried to get out, but MacKinnon says they were trapped by flames. He and several neighbors took refuge in an open field until the flames passed. Firefighters and a 747 Supertanker saved all of the structures. No one was hurt. The fire did burn a lot of the greenery on the ranch and now MacKinnon is cleaning up; repairing fencing, the sprinkler system and covering burned patches with woodchips. MacKinnon says the fire was an added challenge on top of a difficult year. Like many businesses, the Alpine Dog Ranch has been struggling. With people not going on vacation and needing a place to leave their dogs, business has been slow. MacKinnon's friends set up a Go Fund Me page to help with the ranch's repairs. Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker revised his financial disclosure forms five times after being appointed to the top Justice Department role earlier this month, according to the forms, which were released Tuesday.Revisions to disclosure filings are not uncommon, but the release of Whitaker's forms comes amid pressure from government watchdog groups who raised concerns in recent days about why their requests for the documents had gone unfulfilled. The forms show that in the months before then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions hired him as chief of staff in 2017, Whitaker was paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in salary from a conservative oversight group he founded in 2014.Financial records show that The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, or FACT, received nearly all of its funding from a group called DonorsTrust, whose contributors are mostly anonymous but are known to include major Republican donor Charles Koch.Whitaker was paid a total of 4,000 over 2016 and most of 2017, according to his first disclosure form.CNN has previously reported that Whitaker made a total of 7,000 while working for FACT from 2014 to 2016. This figure covers some of the same period reflected in Whitaker's newly released financial disclosure form.Whitaker's financial disclosure documents were provided to CNN by the Justice Department and American Oversight, an outside ethics watchdog group. After the forms were released Tuesday, the non-profit watchdog group Citizens for Ethics in Washington noted that Whitaker's submission was edited five times since his appointment on November 7 and said it had filed a Freedom of Information Act request for all versions of the filing.Whitaker also earned nearly ,000 from World Patent Marketing, a Florida company that was shut down by the FTC and referred to as a "scam" in court documents, in 2016, according to one of the forms.Whitaker was named as an advisory board member of the company in 2014 and was paid at least ,375 from October 2014 to February 2016, according to a payment record previously reported by CNN.Whitaker also made ,000 as a legal commentator for CNN in 2017.In a letter sent to the US Office of Government Ethics last Friday, American Oversight said the Department of Justice had not produced a copy of Whitaker's public financial disclosure reports, despite regulations requiring it to do so, and asked the ethics agency to investigate.American Oversight on Monday also released work-related emails sent by first daughter and presidential adviser Ivanka Trump from a personal email account.Three Senate Democrats filed a new lawsuit Monday challenging Trump's installation of Whitaker, who has never served in a Senate-confirmed position, as acting attorney general following the President's firing of Sessions days after the midterm elections.Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee took turns bashing him at a hearing last week, calling into question the legality of his appointment and demanding he recuse himself from the Russia investigation, which he had questioned in media appearances before joining the government.Sen. Chuck Grassley, the top Republican on the committee, has declined Democrats' request to bring Whitaker in to testify.The-CNN-Wire 3265
