BEIJING, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, on Saturday voiced strong protest against Washington's plan to sell a package of arms worth about 6.4 billion U.S. dollars to Taiwan, urging the U.S. side to immediately withdraw the wrong decision.The U.S. government announced the plan "in disregard of the strong opposition and repeated representations from the Chinese side," said a leading official of the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee."We are firmly opposed to that (the plan), and has lodged severe representations to the U.S. side," the official said.Such a move is gravely against the three joint communiques between China and the United States, especially the "Aug. 17" communique, in which the United States promised not to seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan, and intended to gradually reduce arms sales to the island.The plan endangers China's national security and efforts for peaceful reunification. It also harms Sino-U.S. relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. "The Chinese people are strongly indignant about it," the official said.The arms package would include 114 Patriot (PAC-3) anti-missile systems, 60 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, 12 Harpoon Block II Telemetry missiles, 2 Osprey Class mine hunting ships and a command and control enhancement system, according to a Pentagon website.

XI'AN, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A high-speed railway linking central China city Zhengzhou and northwestern city Xi'an, went into operation Saturday.The 505-km Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed railway, the first of its kind in central and western China, cut the travel time between the two cities from former more than six hours to less than two hours, said local railway authorities Saturday.The first train left Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, at 10:50 a.m. and arrived at Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, at 1:15 p.m., said Long Jing, head of the Xi'an Railway Bureau. With a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the high-speed Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train coded G2004 is about to leave Xi'an for Zhengzhou in Xi'an Railway Station, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, on Feb. 6, 2010.The train traveled at 350 kilometers per hour, said Long. HONG KONG, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong signed an agreement with Brunei for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to income taxes, the HK Special Administrative Region government said on Saturday.According to an official news release, Financial Secretary John Tsang signed the deal with Brunei Second Minister of Finance Abdul Rahman Ibrahim on Saturday during his visit to the southeast Asian country.This was the sixth comprehensive agreement for the avoidance of double taxation concluded by Hong Kong.It will eliminate double taxation instances encountered by Hong Kong and Bruneian investors, and bring about tax savings and certainty in tax liabilities in connection with cross-border economic activities.It is also believed to help foster closer economic and trade links between the two places, and provide added incentives for Brunei's enterprises to do business or invest in Hong Kong.Profits of Hong Kong trading companies doing business through a permanent establishment in Brunei may be taxed in both places if the income is Hong Kong sourced. Under the agreement, double taxation is avoided in that any Brunei tax paid by the companies can be deducted from the tax payable in Hong Kong.
