HONG KONG, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese and Chinese officials said here Monday that they will make joint efforts to further cement ties between the two countries, and ties between Vietnam and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).The officials made the remarks at a reception, hosted by Vietnam's Consulate General in the HKSAR, to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the People's Republic of China."The establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries on Jan. 18, 1950 is a splendid milestone in the development of relations between the two countries," said Pham Cao Phong, consul-general of Vietnam in the HKSAR.He said that the Chinese government and Chinese people have provided great support and assistance to Vietnam in its struggle for independence and freedom as well as its reform and modernization drive.On behalf of the Vietnamese government, the consul-general extended sincere gratitude to the Chinese government and the Chinese people for their support to Vietnam.He said that in recent years, relations between the two countries have developed rapidly, with cooperation in political, economic, cultural and other sectors further deepened.The year of 2010 marks the first year of the founding of ASEAN-- China Free Trade Area, and the year has also been named the Year of Vietnam-China Friendship, which Pham said will "bring relations of the two countries into a new spring."Over the past six decades, the political relations between the two countries have become mature, with the deepening of bilateral cooperation in various sectors, said Lu Xinhua, commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR, at the reception.Lu said that he hoped the two countries will carry on what has been achieved in their bilateral relations, further promote mutual trust, deepen cooperation and consolidate good neighborly relations to open a new chapter for the relations between the two countries.

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police nationwide were urged Friday to tighten security and step up safety overhaul during the Chinese Lunar New Year and be "ready to handle emergencies to prevent serious accidents."A circular from the Ministry of Public Security told local police authorities to increase scrutiny of fireworks parties, trade fairs, lantern shows, and temple fairs during the Spring Festival holiday which starts Saturday.It said the police should assist in keeping public and traffic order around large events' venues and be ready to handle crime and emergencies.Efforts should be made to strengthen security measures around train stations. Police authorities must release "safety tips" to the public through radio, newspapers and cell phone messages, it said.More than 10,000 large events, including traditional temple fairs, will be held across the country during the seven-day holiday, with more than 320 events expected to attract more than 10,000 people each.The latest ministry statistics show police solved nearly 1,200 homicide cases and 915 human trafficking cases last month.Police also arrested nearly 470 suspects for using telephones to scam or defraud people in January, saving 3.45 million yuan (507,000 U.S. dollars) in economic losses.Last month, the police busted nearly 2,000 bases for illegal fireworks' manufacture, sale, or transportation.The Spring Festival, or the Lunar New Year, falls on Sunday. It is the most important annual Chinese festival, with family reunions, much fun and plenty of eating.

 BEIJING, March 22 -- Followings are regions set to be new driving force for China's economy.Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regionXinjiang literally means "New Frontier", and it is promising to be a new economic frontier in China's northwestern areas. Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has abundant oil reserves and it is the largest natural gas-producing region in China. An economic development plan for Xinjiang is expected to come out soon. It will emphasize use of Xinjiang's advantageous resources, including petrochemicals, coal, non-ferrous metals and agriculture. The investment is likely to rise steadily over the next three years, driven by increased financial support from central government and neighboring provinces, and large-scale investment for key projects from State-owned companies. The rising tourism industry will also be a contributor to Xinjiang's economic growth.Tibet autonomous regionThe Tibet autonomous region is becoming another hotspot in China's regional economic development. The plateau region was traditionally dependent on farming and herding. Recently Tibet laid out a plan to explore its mineral resources, while pledging to stick to rational exploitation and minimizing the damage to the natural environment. The government announced plans to achieve "leapfrog development" in Tibet in January, including building the region into a "strategic reserve of natural resources" with the aim of reducing poverty among the Tibetan people. Tibet has more than 3,000 proven mineral reserves and it has China's biggest proven chromium and copper deposits. According to the plan, mineral resources will contribute at least 30 percent to the regional GDP over the next 10 years. Tourism will continue to play a significant role in supporting the economy.
