SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California public health officials say the Southern California region has run out of ICU bed capacity.The region, which includes San Diego and 10 other counties, hit 0% capacity, as the state reported 52,200 more coronavirus cases on Thursday. California officials say regional ICU capacity is calculated based on the total number of adult ICU beds minus neonatal and pediatric ICU beds. Adult ICU capacity includes staffed ICU beds and ICU surge beds.San Diego County said Thursday that it was currently at 16% ICU capacity after adding 2,604 new virus cases. There are 295 ICU cases in the county out of 1,186 hospitalizations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight.You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville.The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park.One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. "We should have done it when we had the technology and the poeple and experience and facilities in place."Saturday night, on the 50th anniversary of the landing, the Air and Space Museum will host a party to celebrate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the election nears, millions of people will be glued to smartphones and computer screens, scrolling through social media for instant information.But platforms like Twitter and Facebook may not be the best sources for information."The way the algorithms work, they promote stuff that gets a lot of reaction or a lot of engagement," says University of San Diego Assistant Professor Colin Campbell. "The systems are designed to try to show you stuff that they think is going to actually make you excited or make you react in some way. And as a result, that tends to be the more polarizing stuff."But both sites have taken steps in 2020 to safeguard against misinformation.In a lengthy blog post about their election protocols, Twitter called their role in the election "critical," saying that people should "use Twitter respectfully and to recognize our collective responsibility to the electorate to guarantee a safe, fair, and legitimate democratic process."They adjusted their "Civic Integrity Policy" so that only verified and official accounts can tweet about election results. They're also imposing stricter punishments for Tweets calling for election interference or violence.Twitter also made changes to the way people interact with links posted on their platform.They've added warnings to misleading tweets and direct people to more credible information if they engage with a misleading post.They also now ask people to click on a link before Retweeting it and encourage "Quote Tweeting," where people can comment on what they're sharing instead of just reposting the original Tweet.Twitter also changed the format of its Trending section, adding context to topics and hashtags.Facebook, meanwhile, put a lot of effort into helping people vote. Their Voter Information Center helped 4.4 million people register to vote in 2020.They also banned all ads related to the election, politics, or other social issues during the entire month leading up to the election.To help keep misinformation from spreading, Facebook says they removed 120,000 posts from March through September for violating their Voter Interference Policies. They also issued 150 million warnings for content that was flagged as misleading by independent fact-checkers.Campbell says both platforms are a lot more reliable now than they were in 2016, but could still have done more. He believes it's because they didn't want to face criticism over censorship."From a pragmatic perspective, they probably don't want to get involved in the challenges of trying to go through and censor or decide what kind of stuff they want to have on the site," says Campbell.Even with all the changes, he says users still need to scroll with skepticism and filter the content they chose to engage with."I think it's very important that we're all vigilant," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least one person is dead after a collision in Sorrento Valley early Saturday.A field of debris marked the site of the collision on northbound Interstate 5 at the I-805 connector. California Highway Patrol officers the crash included a white Toyota Tacoma and a red Honda.The driver of the Honda died at the scene. CHP officials said they believe that person was driving the wrong way and may have been under the influence of alcohol - multiple beer cans were found in the vehicle.The driver of the Toyota was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Officials said  He was in his truck with his dog at the time of the crash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla, who last week announced he contracted coronavirus, has been hospitalized at UCSD Medical Center after experiencing difficulty breathing, his family announced Thursday.Ashleigh Padilla, Padilla's daughter, said her father "was admitted to UCSD Thornton Hospital ICU where he is receiving additional treatment, including a respirator to aid with difficulty breathing associated with COVID-19."“I know his amazing doctors and nurses are doing everything they can to send him home healthy when this is all over," said Ashleigh Padilla.No further details about his condition were given at this time, but Padilla did issue a warning to the public through his daughter.“My father asked me to pass on a message: Everyone needs to take COVID-19 seriously. Please follow the advice of our public health professionals to reduce spread of the virus and take precautions to keep your families and our community safe," said Ashleigh Padilla.Padilla, who represents Chula Vista's District 3, made the announcement in video last Saturday that was published on his Facebook page."After recently experiencing symptoms, I was diagnosed as being positive for the COVID-19 virus, also known as the coronavirus," he said last Saturday.Padilla appeared in the video to be in good spirits as he told viewers that he was doing "very well" and "feeling well."In a follow up statement later that night, he described having a fever, body aches, headaches, chills, that "came on very rapidly."
