As more and more public spaces open back up, many people are finding themselves a little jumpy when they hear someone cough nearby. Are they sick, is it allergies, is it coronavirus?Chances are, we are jumping to conclusions about those “sick” sounds we find disgusting, according to a recently published study from the University of Michigan and University of California, Irvine.“We find no evidence that perceivers can reliably detect pathogen threats from cough and sneeze sounds, even though they are reasonably certain they can,” said Nicholas Michalak, the study’s lead author and a University of Michigan psychology graduate student.In other words, we humans are not very good at distinguishing the seriousness of a cough or sniffle by the sound of it. In fact, the study found that the more disgusting a person perceived the sound to be, the more likely they were to believe the sound came from an infected person, regardless of whether it did.Previous research has indicated people can accurately diagnose infection in others using other senses, like sight and smell.The research is based on four studies that had participants judge whether a cough or sneeze sound came from people infected with a communicable (easily spread) disease or not. On average, participants guessed four out of ten sounds correctly.“Moreover, there was no evidence that accuracy improved when participants knew the true number of infectious sounds in advance or when participants focused on how clear or disgusting they perceived the sounds,” Michalak said. “Despite this poor overall accuracy, perceivers consistently reported reasonable certainty in their judgments.”The study’s authors theorized that people have a belief that a sound that disgusts them is likely to represent a disease threat - this could lead them to exhibit biases to avoid interactions with others who make disgusting but noninfectious noises, according to Mickalak.The study’s co-authors are Oliver Sng, assistant professor of psychological science at UC-Irvine, and U-M graduate student Iris Wang and U-M associate professor of psychology Joshua Ackerman.Read the full study here. 2150

AURORA, Colo. — An Aurora police officer has been suspended for one week following a well-publicized incident in which the white officer pulled a gun on an Indian American doctor who was trying to park at a refugee center the doctor operates.The Sentinel reports that Officer Justin Henderson with the Aurora Police Department was suspended for 40 hours without pay and ordered to attend de-escalation training for his March 1 confrontation with Dr. P.J. Parmar.Parmar, who is Indian American, says he's disappointed with the punishment and that he believes his race affected how Henderson treated him.His attorney has said he plans to file a federal lawsuit against the city.In a June interview, Parmar told Scripps station KMGH in Denver that he wants to see reforms made in the Aurora Police Department.He said on March 1 that he was moving Boy Scout gear from the Mango House — a shared space for refugees and asylees — to another property, when he noticed a police car parked in his ground-level garage, partially blocking the exit. Pamar said he honked his car.Pamar then claims the officer jumped out of the vehicle, swore at him and pulled out a gun as he ran toward the car.Pamar then started recording the interaction on his phone. As wildfires rage in California, emotions are heating up.“People are not getting along,” said Boulder Creek, California, local Alex.In the Santa Cruz mountains, people are stocking up on gas but running out of patience.“The whole valley was closed,” Alex said. “Closed man!”At the local grocery store, workers are counting every single cent after being shut down for two weeks due to fire concerns.“We definitely have stocked up on our gallon waters,” said Vanessa Russo, owner of Wild Roots Market in Boulder Creek.Russo says wildfires during the pandemic have drastically cut into profits and are now weighing on people’s wallets and their well-being.“A lot of our customers are having to deal with refrigeration issues and slowly having evacuations be lifted,” she said.With thousands of homes destroyed during these fires and many businesses already suffering due to COVID-19 concerns, rebuilding could come at a cost never seen before.“The 2020 fire could be even more catastrophic than say the 2018, which was I think was billion,” said Janet Ruiz with the Insurance Information Institute.Ruiz says the California fires could impact areas across the country.“Agriculture, you talk about the wine industry,” she said. “Beef, the pork, all those could be affected by catastrophe.”The economic impacts of these fires stretch from the mountains, all the way to the ocean“So, the time when our businesses need funding from us, we don’t have it to give,” said Bonnie Lipsco-mb, director of economic development for the City of Santa Cruz.Fire displaced Lipscomb’s family and they’re now living in a trailer.”Despite the new digs, Lipscomb is still focused on helping her community during these unprecedented times.“The impact is really catastrophic,” she said. “I don’t think we’ve seen this since the earthquake and maybe not even then.”With much of the city’s budget funded through sales and property taxes, areas of income that were already suffering before the fires, city leaders are now seeking support from state and federal government agencies.“We’re working on long-term recovery, but at the same time, it's day by day,” Lipscomb said.That road to economic recovery, however, will be long and costly. 2221
