SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A "Day of Service" around Mission Bay will honor Maruta Gardner, the woman killed by a drunken driver while she was painting over graffiti in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.Half a dozen service projects will take place around the bay all day Friday, Nov. 3."She was just a firecracker," said Dawn Reilly, one of the organizers with Beautiful MB. "She would liven everybody up and boost your morale and make you feel like you could accomplish anything if you just got together and did it."RELATED: Mission Bay activist killed in road rage crashFrom 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., volunteers will clean up the bike path from Rose Creek to Crown Point. The PB Street Guardians will help people do clean up and graffiti patrol around the Pacific Beach Business District from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m.- 6 p.m.From 2 p.m.-4 p.m., the Mission Beach Town Council will lead volunteers on a clean up and graffiti patrol around MB.Volunteers can also spend time at a senior center near the bay all day if they want a non-physical option.Volunteers can also help paint utility boxes along Mission Boulevard.Full details on the activities, as well as links to register, can be found here.Organizers will also unveil a large mural on a wall at Mission Bay High School to memorialize Gardner. It was painted by local artist Israel Cervantes."It not only honors Maruta's spirit, but it also has the potential to inspire future leaders to make a difference in their community," said John Vallas, the Executive Director of Beautiful MB.Gardner was a principal at Mission Bay High for several years. Having the mural there not only memorializes her, but it can also help teach the next generation about what Gardner did and how to make a difference where you live."That's just as important what we're teaching every single day," said MBHS Principal Ernest Remillard.Several student groups will take part in the volunteer activities as well.Organizers chose November 3rd because that's the day the City Council declared as "Maruta Gardner Day" in 2015.Gardner was killed in February of 2016 by a drunk driver. She was removing graffiti at the South end of Mission Boulevard at North Jetty Road when she was hit.Jonathan Garcia pleaded guilty to a charge of gross vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.Rather than focus on the crime, volunteers hope this day of service helps people remember how inspiring Gardner was to everyone who met her."She was amazing," said Remillard. "She was so proud and honored of her time here at Mission Bay.""I'm wowed by how many people were inspired by her," Reilly added. "I feel like she's looking down on me and I can't wait to see the mural when it's finished."There's also a GoFundMe?page to help support the project. 2815

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A coalition of some of San Diego's biggest business and labor groups wants the city to enact Measure C, the hotel-tax increase that did not generate the necessary support during the March primary. The measure would have raised the city's hotel tax by as much as 3.25% to pay for expanding the convention center, adding services for the homeless, and funding road repair. The measure failed to get the two-thirds vote California law requires for many tax increases. "Sixty-five percent of the people voted for it, that's an overwhelming majority of the voters," said Betsy Brennan, CEO of the Downtown San Diego Partnership, a member of the coalition. "To me that speaks to the need and the desire for people to want to support this measure."The measure may, however, have new life. Two recent court cases involving Upland and San Francisco are giving supporters hope that Measure C can be enacted with a 50-percent plus one majority. It's because Measure C was a citizens' initiative, and there is now a legal precedent that tax increases that got to the ballot through signature drives can pass with a simple majority. “Measure C was overwhelmingly supported by San Diego voters in March, and we believe the will of the people — both the voters and the citizens who placed Measure C on the ballot — should be enacted," said a statement from the coalition, attributed to executives from the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Authority and San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council. "Reducing homelessness, repairing roads and investing in our local economy are just as important as it was in March, if not more so. We believe in this cause and will continue to pursue Measure C’s implementation.”The coalition says it will continue to pursue Measure C's implementation. That could involve suing the city over the measure. The City Council itself could take action but discussed it behind closed doors last week without taking any action. Others, however, say enacting Measure C would send the wrong message to voters, who entered the polls March 3 understanding the proposition needs a two-thirds vote. "There are people out there who say my vote doesn't matter. Changing the goalposts after the election would prove that to be true," said Christopher Rice Wilson, associate director at Alliance San Diego, a community empowerment organization that did not take a position on Measure C. The final vote on Measure C was 239,024 in favor, versus 127,349 opposed. 2487

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- UC San Diego denounced an Instagram account claiming an affiliation with the university that posted "hateful, racist content" on its page, while a similar investigation was underway at the University of San Diego. On Sunday night, UCSD officials were made aware of the page, which featured several racist posts and represented a connection with the university."We firmly denounce what was shared on this account," the school wrote in a Monday afternoon Twitter statement, "and condemn all forms of racism and hate."UCSD said similar posts were seen on another account, which apparently claimed affiliations with a different university.RELATED: USD investigating white supremacist Instagram accounts that claim ties to schoolThough the other university was not identified in UCSD's statement, the University of San Diego posted a statement last weekend indicating the school was aware "that abhorrent and hateful Instagram accounts, claiming ties to USD, have been used to post white supremacy propaganda."In a statement, USD said the content of the accounts "tears at the very fabric of who we are as a Catholic university and the values we hold dear."The school says it has initiated an investigation into the posts and asked Instagram to take the pages down, along with any other affiliated accounts.USD officials said anyone with information regarding the accounts' creator should contact Dr. Donald Goodwin at deanofstudents@sandiego.edu."Hate speech and actions directed at intimidating or harassing any members of our campus community have no place at USD and cannot be tolerated," the school said.UCSD says its Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination -- which provides assistance to students, faculty and staff regarding reports of bias, harassment and discrimination -- is working with the school's chief information security officer to investigate the account.Anyone with information regarding the account's creator was asked to contact the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination at OPHD@ucsd.edu."If found that UC San Diego community members are involved, they will be held accountable," the statement said. "UC San Diego stands with our Black community members and firmly against all forms of racism and hate. We encourage our community to actively counter racist speech and to be an ally and advocate to any group that is harmed, by upholding UC San Diego's Principles of Community and our commitment to each other as Tritons." 2504
