The Sacramento Bee reported guests were evacuated from a Comfort Inn in Red Bluff early Saturday during a standoff between police and a domestic violence suspect. The Red Bluff Police Department said in a release that 21-year-old Christian Sandoval-Perez of Corning faces multiple charges including child abuse and domestic violence. Officers went to the hotel’s second floor and encountered Sandoval-Perez with a gun. He held off police for more than 75 minutes. 637

(KGTV) -- A federal lawsuit was filed Tuesday after a state audit found the California DMV's "motor voter" program that started in 2018 was riddled with technical problems that led to discrepancies in voter registrations.Attorney Harmeet Dhillon, a member of the National Republican party, filed the federal lawsuit Tuesday against the state of California that accuses Secretary of State Alex Padilla of violating the National Voter Registration Act.Padilla responded in a statement saying the lawsuit "is a fundamental misrepresentation" of the act. He called the lawsuit an "underhanded attempt" at voter suppression.Dhillon filed the lawsuit on behalf of three California residents who are Republican voters. The lawsuit also names the director of California's Department of Motor Vehicles, Steve Gordon.Dhillon said that a recent audit that found a variety of problems with California DMV's "motor voter" program, which automatically registers people to vote, helped bring the issues in her lawsuit to light. 1039

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a law giving tax breaks to more immigrants. In June, California expanded its earned income tax credit to apply to immigrants who have jobs and pay taxes but don't have a Social Security number. But the credit only applied to immigrants who had a child under 6. The law Newsom signed Friday eliminates that requirement, making the tax credit available to more people. It's one of several laws California has enacted in recent years to offer more government services to people living in the country illegally. Newsom said the law will help stimulate the economy. 634

Ronald Gasser will spend the next 30 years behind bars for shooting former NFL star Joe McKnight.Gasser faced up to 40 years in prison after his conviction of manslaughter in January of this year.He was arrested on a manslaughter charge Dec. 5, 2016, a few days after the shooting, and charged with killing McKnight at a busy intersection in Terrytown, Louisiana following a road rage incident.He was later indicted on a second-degree murder charge.During the trial, prosecutors painted Gasser as the aggressor in the deadly encounter.Today, Judge Ellen Kovach said the fatal road rage incident should serve as a cautionary tale.If Gasser and McKnight had disengaged, or if Gasser hadn’t decided to use his firearm, both could have walked away.“This tragedy did not need to happen,” Kovach said.The mother of Joe McKnight's son, Michelle Quick, yelled out that's "less than he deserves." And she cursed as she was escorted out of the courtroom. I have to forgive you to have some sort of peace to live my life."Quick also took the stand. She says McKnight and her 7-year-old son Jayden -- called his Dad's phone after learning of his death. He left a voicemail. He asked his mom if dad could hear it from heaven. He asked if he could watch his dad's highlights on YouTube. When he went to watch a video, a clip of his dad's body on the ground came up. She did ask the judge for the maximum sentence of 40 years.Gasser gave no response. (AP) — California is looking to tighten the rules about children under 13 using social media.The state Senate voted 31-4 on Thursday to require social media companies to first get the consent of a parent or guardian before creating an account for a child the company knows is under 13.Federal law already requires social media companies to get parental consent before collecting or selling data of children under 13. That's why most social media companies, including Facebook, already ban children under 13 from creating accounts.Democratic Sen. Henry Stern says the bill will protect children. But Democratic Sen. Scott Wiener says the bill would harm LGBT youth who live in abusive households by isolating them from others like them.The bill now heads to the state Assembly. 803
