A bride from New Orleans went all out for her beach wedding -- enlisting 34 of her closest friends and family to join her as bridesmaids on her big day.Casme Carter tied the knot June 2 in Destin, Florida, with her six sisters and 28 friends by her side. She says that she planned on having 50 ladies but some couldn't make it because of family reasons and an Army deployment. But why -- and how -- so many? Carter says she has a lot of friends from mentoring and participating in women's empowerment groups."I wanted them all to experience the love that they've seen that I've been praying for and wanting. I wanted them to witness it first hand," Carter says. When she told her now-husband, Gary Carter, of her plans, he didn't think she was serious at first, she says."He thought I was joking but then he was like, 'If anybody can do it.' He knows how I am and how many women are around me," Carter said.Carter says her husband's next concern was whether he could match that many women with men. "You don't expect me to have that many groomsmen," she recalls him saying. The bridesmaids were even more surprised than her husband because Carter didn't tell them that there would be 34 women in her wedding. She says she broke them up into a few different group chats to discuss details and told them just to get neutral beach dresses, and bring some bathing suits and khakis. The bride says the surprise went off without a hitch. "When they saw everybody they were like, 'Oh my God, Casme. This is so awesome!'"She was just happy that everyone was able to make it to her wedding. "Their time and their presence was a gift to me, just being there."In addition to holding a massive wedding, Carter says the couple decided to get married only three months after getting engaged. She says she always dreamed of a beach wedding and after being a wedding singer in Destin for at least 50 weddings she knew it was the place she wanted to get married.Carter also had a Pinterest board for her wedding that she had worked on for several years before even meeting her husband so she finalized it printed it out, and went to work to pull the massive event together in a short time.Overall, Carter says the day was perfect and she wouldn't have changed a thing."Everything about this wedding was different," Carter says. "It was so amazing to have them all right beside me."The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. All rights reserved. 2465
There are tens of thousands of sexual assault cases that not only go untold, but unsolved. Joyful Heart Foundation is a non-profit fighting to get backlogged rape kits sitting on evidence shelves tested in order to clear more cases. "No matter where they live and no matter what their zip code is, they have rights to have their kit tested,” says Ilse Knecht, director of policy and advocacy at the foundation. But why aren't they being tested in the first place? “One of the biggest factors is rape is not prioritized as the violent crime that it is, Knecht says. “So, unless somebody asks for that kit to be sent forward, such as a detective or prosecutor, it could sit there forever.” Knecht says factors such as money and resources also play a role. Reports show many of the cases are being suspended instead of closed, but that’s changing, slowly. “Just had a big win in New York state,” says Knecht. “Gov. Cuomo just signed a bill, the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, that allows survivors, among many other things, to know the status of their rape kit.” During the 2017 legislative session, the Joyful Heart Foundation helped pass 17 bills in 15 states to push rape kit backlog testing. It was a major step toward justice, and Knecht says they’re not done fighting.“It's really important that every rape kit that has been sitting on the shelf for years is taken off the shelf and know that every single kit that is collected is tested in a timely manner,” she says. 1500
A Disney movie set in the kingdom of "Corona" has suddenly become a hit on social media, making some question whether the movie foresaw the current reaction to the spread of the coronavirus. The movie "Tangled" was released in 2010, and at the time was a major hit at the box office. It is now part of the Disney+ lineup. Here is the plot, according to Disney:"When the (Corona) kingdom's most wanted bandit is taken hostage by Rapunzel —a teen with 70 feet of golden hair who's looking to escape the tower where she's been locked away for years — the unlikely duo sets off on a hair-raising escapade."Locked away for years? Corona? It might be a stretch given many of us have been hold up in our homes for one week, but some are making the comparison. Here has been some of the recent reaction on social media:I'm watching Tangled and I can't believe Rapunzel practiced social distancing in a tower away from the village of Corona. I just— 953
A Fordham University student who fell about 30 feet from inside a clock tower early Sunday has died, school officials said.Sydney Monfries was climbing the school's iconic clock tower in Keating Hall about 3 a.m. when the fall occurred on the Bronx, New York, campus of the Jesuit university. The senior, who was critically injured, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital."There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise — and mere weeks from graduation," university President Joseph M. McShane, said in a statement. "Fordham will confer a bachelor's degree upon Sydney posthumously, which we will present to her parents at the appropriate time."A mass was scheduled to be held for Monfries on Sunday evening at Fordham University Church. Monfries was 22 years old, according to 829
