The government of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) logged 3.962 billion patacas (around 495 million U.S. dollars) in total revenue in January 2008, up 37 percent year-on-year, the government said.     The latest statistics released by the SAR government showed that a major share of the total revenue for January 2008 came from direct gaming taxes, which saw an increase of 30.9 percent year-on-year to 3.09 billion patacas (386 million U.S. dollars).     Thanks to the booming gaming industry in the island city, which has seen the opening of its 28th casino by the end of 2007, Macao's gaming taxes grew by 48 percent over the previous year to 29.3 billion patacas (3.7 billion U.S. dollars) in 2007, leading to an overall surplus of 21.8 billion patacas (2.7 billion U.S. dollars) in public finance, according to official statistics.     In its latest research report released Friday, the Bank of China Macao Branch forecast that due to the dynamic development of gaming and tourism industries and ballooning fixed-asset investment in the city, Macao's GDP will keep a growth rate of 13 percent in 2008, which is lower than the 27 percent rate of the previous year.

China's Premier Wen Jiabao said on Wednesday macro control measures should be further strengthened to prevent the fast-growing national economy from overheating. The monetary policies should be stable in general but "moderately tightened" to secure a stable and fast-growing economy, said Premier Wen at a meeting of the State Council. Wen said the country will continue to implement its current prudent fiscal and monetary policies. He called for fiscal policies to be more supportive of industrial restructuring. He said industrial production is growing at a rate that is faster than desired and the trade surplus is too big. China's trade surplus in May soared to US.45 billion, up 73 percent from the same month last year. Wen said the country would continue to adjust export rebates and tariffs on certain items while further improving policies to boost imports in a bid to address the climbing trade surplus. Sustained fast growth of investment, excessive liquidity in the capital market and rising inflation pressure also deserve more attention, said Wen. Wen said the government would control the supply of land and bank loans to high energy-consuming projects. He also said financial, fiscal and taxation measures should be employed to guide the flow of capital. He said there should be more channels for capital outflow and for the use of foreign exchange. Rising food prices have caused the consumer price index (CPI) to rise 3.4 percent in May, higher than the government's target of three percent. Wen pledged to stabilize food prices by ensuring the food supply and enhanced supervision over food quality.

President Hu Jintao will "elaborate on China's position and propositions on climate change" at the upcoming summit of industrialized nations which features a session on global warming. Assistant Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai told a news briefing yesterday: "China's population is one-fifth of the global population, which means one out of five of the world's people affected by climate change will be in China. "That is why the Chinese government takes this issue very seriously... We need to base our development on energy that is secure and sustainable." The meeting at the Baltic Sea resort of Heiligendamm will bring together leaders of the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, and Japan. Coinciding with Hu's visit, the Chinese government yesterday released its position paper for the G8 meetings, outlining Beijing's policy on climate change, energy, IPR protection, investment liberalization and African development. Cui reiterated China's long-time and traditional friendship with African countries. "China and African countries have had a very friendly, brotherly partnership since the establishment of New China, since the 1950s, and that has continued up to now," he said. "It can be said that this has been widely praised around the globe," he added. "In this world, there will always be people willing to criticise others. If they want to say something, then that's their business. Whether or not it's true, is another matter." He said China also wants the United Nations to be more involved in preventing conflict. "China maintains that the United Nations has a bigger role to play in conflict prevention and settlement and post-conflict reconstruction in Africa," the paper said. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday praised China's "helpful" role in Sudan. "The Chinese government has been exerting its utmost efforts (on Darfur), as I understand, and appreciate," he said.
