HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Los Angeles Police Thursday released body-camera videos that show what happened leading up to the moment police shot and killed a machete-wielding man, KABC reports. The incident happened on November 26, 2019 on a street in Hollywood. The event began to unfold when the suspect, Nathaniel Pinnock, reportedly robbed a store near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue. Pinnock allegedly used a knife in the robbery. The body-cam video shows the 22-year-old stealing a vehicle at a fast-food restaurant before crashing it into several police cruisers. Several shots were fired by an officer before he begins to back away. After the officer falls to the ground, video shows the suspect continue to run toward the officer before another officer shoots the suspect. Hotels are still struggling to fill rooms like they were before an avalanche of cancellations starting in March.Now, travelers are slowly returning to train stations, airports, and hotels.“This is something that none of us were expecting or were prepared for,” said Daniel del Olmo, the President and COO of Sage Hotel Management, a Sage Hospitality Group company. Sage Hospitality Group manages 52 hotels across the U.S.“We went from basically a level of revenue of million on a daily basis to effectively ,000 per day in early May,” del Olmo said.“The economic impact has been something that no one could have ever prepared for, you could not have prepared for it financially, you could not have even prepared for it psychologically or emotionally,” said Chip Rogers, President of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. “2020 will go down on record of having the lowest occupancy in the history of the hotel industry and that includes during the Great Depression.”The association represented the entire industry from large brands to small hotels.For smaller companies, the impact of COVID-19 is especially difficult on their bottom line. “Well over 60% of all hotels are actually classified as small businesses by the Small Business Association,” Rogers said.“In the third week of March, we found ourselves having to furlough over 90% of our staff,” del Olmo said.“With no further assistance, about two thirds of hotels say they cannot make it another six months,” Rogers said. Del Olmo said they haven’t reached that point.“We have not had to permanently close, thankfully, any of our properties,” he said. But others have. Fewer visitors means less money and less work.“We’re right at almost 2 million jobs lost in the hotel industry,” Rogers said.Del Olmo said Sage Hospitality had to furlough 5,000 employees, then eventually lay off 4,000. “What keeps us up at night,” Del Olmo said, “is how we bring our associates back to work.”In the meantime, the group is providing help for former employees. “We initially established a Sage Associate Relief Fund, which allowed us to basically provide pantry items to our associates in need,” he said.While employees still on the job were given more tasks to help fill the gap. “Everybody basically on the teams is doing multiple jobs that, in the past, they might have never done before. We have general managers that on a daily basis strip beds and run the parking,” Del Olmo explained.As hotels continue to balance health, safety and running a business, they are getting creative with ways to bring in revenue, such as hosting micro weddings and hallways concerts with musicians.“Basically roaming the halls. You basically could be listening from the comfort and safety of the entry from your room,” Del Olmo said.Even with the creative new solutions, Rogers said without aid or an uptick in travel, some hotels may suffer.“We may be a much smaller industry in the next couple of years but we will adapt,” Rogers said. 2988
GASLAMP QUARTER (KGTV) - A benefit was held Sunday night for a local woman injured in a parasailing accident in Mexico. On June 9th, Katie Malone was in Puerto Vallarta to celebrate her 29th birthday when tragedy struck. According to a local newspaper, Malone was parasailing when the rope tethered to a boat somehow broke and left her flying through the air.Malone crash-landed at an airport and suffered a fractured skull, fractured pelvis, broken ribs, a collapsed lung and other injuries. Donations helped pay for her treatment and life flight from Mexico back to San Diego. She spent about a month in the hospital. For the past few months, Malone has been in physical therapy and working to get stronger everyday. She says she is a year ahead of schedule."When it first happened, I just wanted to move forward and not dwell on things," Malone said. "I would do physical therapy and in between physical therapy I would do homework they gave me to do." Malone is extremely thankful to family and friends who have been there for her and helped her move forward.Sunday night's benefit was held at "Tin Roof" in the Gaslamp Quarter. The benefit was to raise money for Malone's medical bills.Malone said she might go parasailing again, but not anytime soon. 1315
Having a full kitchen of healthy foods is becoming a luxury. Food pantries across the country are still seeing a dramatic increase in need.“I hope that we eventually get this thing under control, so we can wean everyone off the need for food pantries and shelters like ours, because this is not sustainable,” said Kim Guadagno, CEO of Fulfill, a New Jersey food bank.Guadagno says her organization has seen an increase in demand of almost 2.5 million meals compared to this time last year.Feeding America says at the peak in April, there was a 70% increase in demand, and it’s sustained around 60% higher.Many food banks say they're seeing many families for the first time.“You can always tell someone who has never been to a food pantry before. They come literally right up to this building in tears, because they’ve never had to ask for help before and it’s crushing to all of us,” said Guadagno.Feeding America expects that increased need will continue during the holidays, which is an important time for food banks.“We see increased awareness around hunger and food insecurity around the holidays. It’s a great time for food banks to fundraise. A lot of that fundraising helps sustain them throughout the year,” said Zuani Villarreal, Director of Communications at Feeding America.Food banks are having to purchase more product because of supply chain disruptions.They say right now, cash donations are critical for that and to purchase new supplies like PPE. 1471
