SHANGHAI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) - Swiss President Doris Leuthard Thursday said the rise in bilateral trade between Switzerland and China is a delightful surprise, as she seeks to expand economic cooperation with China through a free trade agreement.The trade increase was a surprise as it came during the economic crisis last year, Leuthard said.In the first six months of 2010, Swiss exports to China increased more than 30 percent and Chinese exports to Switzerland increased more than 16 percent.Total trade volume between the two countries during the period hit 6.2 billion Swiss Francs (5.86 billion U.S. dollars), she added.Leuthard said she is optimistic about the future of Sino-Swiss bilateral trade, as the two countries are working on a free trade agreement."We are ending feasibility study (for the agreement) so both sides know the market, the opportunities and the risks very well. It is very promising," she said.After the joint feasibility study, the two sides will enter the final stage ahead of the signing of the deal, she added.Talks on the free trade agreement began in 2007 when Leuthard, as head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, signed an agreement with then-Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai. The agreement recognized the full market status of China.Switzerland hopes to be the first European country to have a free trade agreement with China, Leuthard told Xinhua in an interview last year.China is Switzerland's second largest trade partner in Asia after Japan.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 19 (Xinhua)-- More than 1,700 mudslide evacuees presently residing at schools in Zhouqu county of northwest China's Gansu Province are to be relocated as students will start the new semester soon, local authorities said Thursday.More than 400 households, altogether over 1,700 people, will be moved to Shachuan Village, in western of the mudslides-leveled county, said Yang Jianguo, head of the Civil Affairs Bureau of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.The people are now living in dormitories and classrooms of three local schools, namely No.1 High School, No.1 Junior High and No. 3 Junior High. With students coming back from their summer vacation, the schools could no longer be used as settlement areas.More than one thousand tents will be erected at the new settlement zone covering an area of 67 mu (4.5 hectares), with three tents for each family, said Yang."They probably will have to spend the winter there so winter tents will be used," said Yang.The devastating mudslides which hit on Aug. 8 have claimed 1,364 lives with 401 people still missing as of 4 p.m. Thursday.Work crews will level the ground, ensure water and electricity supply and build lavatories from Aug. 21 to 23. They will start setting up tents on Aug. 24, said Yang.The new semester for junior school students and pupils will begin on Aug. 25 and senior high students will be transferred to other cities in the province, and start the new semester in early September.

BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) has sent four working teams Monday to help flood control in provinces and regions pounded by heavy rains that triggered floods and mud slides.The flood control authority held a meeting Monday night with the Ministry of Water Resources agreeing to dispatch one more working team to central Hunan Province to help consolidate river banks along the upper reaches of the Xiangjiang River and ensure the safety of reservoirs.Three other teams were separately sent Monday afternoon to Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the eastern province of Fujian.From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, torrential rains pelted Guangxi, provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan and Jiangxi. Some regions even saw rainstorms, according to the SFDH.At least 24 people are missing after flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains engulfed two vehicles in Fujian Province Monday, according to a local official.The authority asked the Guangxi team to help with floods control and mud slides prevention work there. It ordered the team sent to Fujian to help with rescue work.The team for Xinjiang will help investigate the collapse of a reservoir dam in Xinjiang on Monday morning after heavy rains on the previous night.The local government had evacuated more than 200 families living downstream the reservoir. No casualties are reported so far.

NONG'AN, Jilin, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- With the approach of a new round of torrential rains, the country roads in flood-ravaged Nong'an County in northeast China were packed with villagers fleeing their homes Wednesday.Traveling aboard tractors, trucks, mini-buses, and motorcycles, and carrying belongings such as quilts and chicken, thousands of people set off on a journey of exodus.Up to 27,000 villagers living downstream from the Songhua River in Jilin Province need to be evacuated as downpours are expected to batter Nong'an from Wednesday evening until Friday, said Wang Wei, deputy Communist Party chief of the county."Fresh downpours may lead to the breach of riverbanks and two reservoirs upstream would have to open sluices to discharge water, which would threaten the lives of residents downstream," Wang said."The mass evacuation began in the early morning today. By now, 18,000 people have moved to safety. There are still 9,000 young villagers who were asked to stay and help fortify the riverbanks," he said in the late evening.Torrential rains pounded the county one week ago, swelling the Songhua River and inundating almost 50,000 hectares of cropland, or about half of the total farming area."I really don't want to leave my home. But the village officials told me: so long as you are still alive, you will have your home again," said Yu Shutao from Liansankeng Village."I will bring my family to go to my elder brother's home in the town. As soon as the floods recede, I will come home to attend my cropland," he said.Thirty-two-year-old villager Sun Lianhua sat in a mini-bus with her dog."The dog is like a member of my family.
