CARLSBAD (KGTV) — The new reality that major theme parks like Legoland won't be able to reopen for months is reverberating well beyond the gates. That's because local businesses are no longer able to draw much-needed customers from the park."When they're down, it gives all the leisure marketplace reason to pause and say, do we want to travel?" said Tim Stripe, co-president of Grand Pacific Resorts, which owns multiple hotels and timeshares within walking distance of Legoland. The governor's office announced this week that major theme parks such as Legoland could not open until counties enter the least restrictive tier of coronavirus restrictions. San Diego County is two tiers away, meaning the move could take months. Bret Schanzenbach, CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, said there are many reasons to visit the city, including golf, beaches, and the outlet mall, but nothing brings tourists like Legoland. "The explosion of hotels that we've had since Legoland opened is undeniable, and the skyrocketing of our tourism dollars in this area since Legoland has opened is undeniable," he said. "All those other amenities are great and they play off of each other, but Legoland is the biggest draw in North San Diego County."Stripe said his company has closed one of its hotel facilities, while the other two are at 40% capacity, with employment cut in about half. He said the hotels get 20% of their guests directly because of Legoland. It's not just hotels, but also restaurants. Carlsbad's Green Dragon Tavern and Museum is taking a double hit. Not only is the restaurant losing out on tourists — about 20% of its business — but also the corporate events Legoland used to host there."We're definitely looking forward to the day where these attractions can come back and we hope Legoland is going to stick through it," said john lek, its senior vice president. The governor's office says major theme parks are risky because they attract out of towners.Legoland currently has about 100 employees, down from 3,000 pre-pandemic. 2045

CHICAGO — Last week, Forbes named a first-generation Indian immigrant and Harvard student, Trisha Prabhu, as its youngest honoree on its 30 under 30 social impact list. Her impact comes in the form stopping cyberbulling dead in its tracks. The 20-year-old is on a quest to build a better world by combating hate through technology.“It's something that's impacting millions of young people globally and the consequences can quite literally be deadly,” said Prabhu.About 20% of students ages 12-18 experience bullying nationwide. Around 15% of them are bullied online or by text.A former victim of cyberbullying, Prabhu says reading about a 12-year-old in Florida who died by suicide after being cyberbullied forced her to act.“It just absolutely devastated me, and I knew as a young person who had grown up in a world with technology and phones, that I was uniquely positioned to do something about this, that I could make a change.”At just 13 years old, she created ReThink, a patented technology that can detect hurtful or offensive messages by a user and force them to pause and think.“What if we're able to quite literally intervene in the decision-making process? And before someone hits send go ‘whoa hold on. What you're about to say could be offensive. Are you sure you want to post that?’”The custom-built ReThink keyboard replaces the mobile device’s default keyboard and can spot and flag aggressive messages. She tested it as part of a science project with 1,500 young people.“Basically, seeing how young people behaved online, on a social media like environment, when they had a chance to rethink saying something offensive, 93% of the time, young people change their mind.”The prodigy has given multiple TEDx talks about cyber bullying over the years and has spoken at schools around the country and internationally.ReThink has now been used by more than 5.5 million young people and has partnered with groups like scholastic and the U.S. State Department.Last month, the Elevate Prize Foundation awarded Prabhu 0,000 in funding to help support her mission.“It really is just a matter of being conscious being conscious of what we're saying,” she said. “Just a little bit of consciousness can take us all a very long way.” 2245

CASEY COUNTY, Kent. -- A man in Kentucky not only pulled over but got out of his vehicle to pay his respects while a funeral procession passed. The family was moved by the man's kindness and posted about it on social media and has since gone viral.Cecil Luster was a member of the U.S. Navy. His family celebrated his life yesterday in Casey County. Many drivers pulled over for the procession, led by the Patriot Guard of Kentucky. Cecil's grandson, Drew Richardson, says there was one driver, who was standing outside of his vehicle, who caught his family's attention."When my mom was talking about it afterward, there were tears welling up in her eyes, that someone actually showed respect for our family," Drew Richardson said.Standing with his hands crossed, it was a simple act of kindness that moved the entire family.Mark Meece says he didn't even think twice about getting out of his vehicle and he got the idea from a social media post."I've seen on Facebook where a soldier was standing outside in the rain, and I thought, you know, I need to start doing that to show respect. It was an inspiration to me," Meece said. The family shared the good deed on Facebook and it's been shared and commented on hundreds of times. Meece says the positivity of the social media post has encouraged him. "Every morning I always ask God, to put someone in my path that I can help or maybe even inspire or maybe they can inspire me and help me along the way," Meece said."We'd just like to thank him from the bottom of our hearts," Richardson said. This story was first reported by Jacqueline Nie at WLEX in Lexington, Kentucky. 1649

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The Orange County father who tied up his daughter and gagged her in an attempt to force her into drug rehab in Mexico could face charges. California Highway Patrol officers pulled over the car Monday night on Interstate 5 off of Cannon Road in Carlsbad after getting calls from drivers about a possible kidnapping. "Received a report of a woman bound and gagged in the back seat, kidnapped essentially," said CHP Sgt. Mike Morrin. The 17-year-old girl was with her 57-year-old father and 21-year old sister. According to the CHP, both the father and sister could face charges ranging from kidnapping to child endangerment. "You just can't gag someone and bind them and take them in the back of a car to a foreign country. That's just not acceptable. We're trying to sort out the details," said Sgt. Morrin. The teen admitted to officers she's been using methamphetamines for the last year. Her relatives told 10News she escaped twice from local rehabs. The family lives in San Juan Capistrano. Nancy Knott is a licensed psychotherapist. She spent years working as a treatment counselor for Scripps before going into private practice. Knott is not familiar with this case, but says parents often reach a breaking point. "When it reaches a certain point, desperation sets in, and anytime desperation sets in, people don't always make the correct choices. They're trying a lot of times to save the life of their child," said Knott.Knott said families in California can hire outside help when trying to force a minor into treatment. "A parent could arrange for a transport company to take their child into treatment and they do not use physical restraints unless absolutely necessary. Again, first choice is to have the parents to seek out some expert advice, try to work with their child themselves, if not, usually the one off approach works better especially with the child parent relationship to bring in a professional, to work with the child and the family. The family would be signing off permission, or the guardian, to the transport company to take that child to treatment," said Knott adding that the company should be licensed and bonded. Knott doesn't recommend seeking treatment in Mexico. "I've never taken a patient to Mexico. And frankly, never will. The laws are different there. The family is always at great risk of crossing that border because they are not going to be the same laws as in the US, so it's riskier; that's my opinion," said Knott.Knott said early intervention is critical, but recovery can still take years. "Treatment doesn't always work the first or second time with adolescents. We look at keep them alive until 25, meaning the brain is more developed at 25 to have a little more rational way of looking at their problem," said Knott. The teenager was taken into custody by child protective services. 10News reached her 21-year-old sister by phone Tuesday, and she declined to comment. 2966
