NEW DELHI, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of India's ruling Congress-led United Progress Alliance (UPA), Friday expressed her wish that relations between India and China can be enhanced with common efforts by the two countries.     During a meeting with visiting Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Gandhi said that there exists a very solid basis for developing friendly and cooperative relations between India and China. Dai conveyed cordial greeting and good wishes from General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chinese President Hu Jintao, who also expressed his congratulations to the Congress party and the UPA for successfully winning a second term of government in the general elections this year. He said that President Gandhi has personally made great efforts for the development of Sino-Indian relations as leader of the UPA and the Congress party.     Dai also said China is willing to make common efforts with India to upgrade the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership to a new level.     Gandhi also memorized the 1988 historic visit to China by her late husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, as well as her attendance of the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.     She expressed her wish that as the 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China is nearing, the peoples of India and China, especially the youth of the two countries, increase human exchanges to build a good social foundation for furthering friendship between the two countries.     Dai and Gandhi also exchanged views on strengthening friendly ties between the Communist Party of China and the Congress party of India.

GENEVA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday formally requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set up an expert panel to investigate and rule whether a U.S. ban on Chinese poultry imports violates WTO regulations.     The request was made at a meeting of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body, but it was rejected by the United States according to relevant procedures.     During the meeting, the Chinese delegation reiterated that the U.S. measure is "discriminatory" and "has damaged the lawful rights and interests of China's poultry industry."     "While violating various WTO rules, the measure has severely undermined the stable development of Sino-U.S. trade in poultry products," the Chinese delegation said.     At the heart of the dispute is the U.S. Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, which contains a section prohibiting any funds being used to facilitate imports of poultry products from China. The act was signed into U.S. law in March, and China filed complaints to the WTO in on April 17.     While Monday's request for the WTO panel was rejected by the United States, China could make a second request at the end of this month. After the second request, the WTO panel will be established automatically.     It usually takes more than half a year for a WTO panel to give its final ruling on a trade dispute.     China and the United States banned imports of each other's poultry products in 2004 following outbreaks of bird flu. They agreed to lift the bans at the Sino-U.S. Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade in 2004.     China did lift the ban but has complained that the United States was not following suit.     China imported 580,000 tons of chicken products from the United States last year, accounting for about 75 percent of total chicken imports. 

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to strengthen international judicial cooperation with other countries, including the United States, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Justice said.     The unnamed spokesperson made the statement while commenting on the case of two former Bank of China (BOC) managers in southern Guangdong Province, who were convicted in a U.S. court last year of embezzlement and money laundering, the Legal Daily reported Friday.     "China welcomed the verdict by the U.S. court," which sentenced Xu Chaofan and Xu Guojun, two former managers of the BOC Guangdong Kaiping Branch, and their wives, to prison terms of eight to 25 years, the spokesperson said.     Xu Chaofan was sentenced to 25 years in jail and Xu Guojun to 22 years. Their wives were each sentenced to eight years in prison. All four were further sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay 482 million U.S. dollars in restitution.     The four were found guilty of a racketeering conspiracy that began in 1991 and continued until October 2004.     Prosecutors said the defendants laundered stolen money through Hong Kong, Canada and the U.S., including 3 million U.S. dollars deposited at several Las Vegas casinos.     The case was one of the biggest of its kind since the founding of New China in 1949.     It has, however, reinforced the positive development of Sino-U.S. judicial cooperation and provided experience in dealing with organized economic crime.     "Fleeing suspects are doomed to be punished by law," said the spokesperson.     International judicial cooperation, an effective way of fighting crime, would contribute to the crackdown on trans-national crimes, he said.     Professor Huang Feng of the Beijing Normal University's Criminal Law Research Institute said Xu's sentencing in the U.S. provided "an alternative to extradition" as the two countries had not signed an extradition treaty.     Fleeing suspects could still be convicted abroad, though they currently could not be repatriated, Huang said.     Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in May the two guilty couples should be repatriated or extradited to China as soon as possible.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China is to hold a National Day military and mass parade as well as an evening gala on Tian'anmen Square Thursday to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).     Following will be highlights of the once-in-a-decade grand celebrations:     -- Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao, will be on Tian'anmen Rostrum to observe the parade.     -- President Hu is to review line-ups of the tri-service People's Liberation Army (PLA), standing in an open-top home-made Red Flag limousine.     -- National flag raising ceremony will be held on Tian'anmen Square.     -- Military parade is expected to involve more than 8,000 people, and a total of 52 types of new weapon systems, including the PLA's missiles, airborne early warning and control aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and other sophisticated military hardware, will be shown.     -- Military paraders will march goose-step through the square in new-style uniforms initiated in 2007.     -- Women militia soldiers in purple skirts will march goose-step through Tian'anmen Square, holding submachine guns. The formation will be led by two models who used to be good at cat walking.     -- Snow Leopard armed police unit, which took charge of security of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will be shown at the National Day parade.     -- Sixteen female fighter pilots, the country's first batch, are expected to make a debut in a fly-past at the parade.     -- Civilian formations will march through Tian'anmen Square, showcasing panoramic achievements China has made over the past sixdecades. The mass parade will feature dozens of floats themed with, for instance, the Beijing Olympics and the devastating Wenchuan earthquake in southwestern Sichuan last year.     -- Improved relations between the mainland and Taiwan will be showcased at the parade.     -- China's agriculture scientist, Yuan Longping, will wave his iconic invention of "super hybrid rice" atop of an agriculture-themed float, escorted by farmers.     -- China's first astronaut Yang Liwei and first space walker Zhai Zhigang will show up on a float along with four other colleagues that have entered the space aboard Shenzhou series of spaceships since 2003.     -- Hurdler Liu Xiang and diving diva Guo Jingjing will stand ona float to show the achievements in sports. Chinese athletes reaped 51 gold medals in the Beijing Olympics, ranking the first in the gold medal list.     -- About 60,000 people will dance to the song "I Love China" at the grandiose National Day evening gala, showcasing the country's ethnic harmony and development.     -- Fireworks, designed by renowned Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang who masterminded the firework display at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, will dazzle the night of the National Day.     -- About 4,000 performers will form a "light cubic" formation in the center of Tian'anmen Square at the gala. PHUKET, Thailand, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States need to maintain high-level contact and deepen cooperation in various areas of common concern, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Wednesday in his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.     Yang said the two countries should also keep close communication and collaboration on global issues and properly handle disputes and sensitive issues in order to push forward bilateral ties.
