SALT LAKE CITY — A pair of best friends who met while studying at Utah Valley University are taking a long, unique journey to deliver a message of peace.James Alan Thompson of Sandy and his friend Paul T. Chavez are walking across the United States.Their journey began on June 24 in San Francisco. They hope to complete the 3,000-mile journey in Washington, D.C., by December.They were inspired to make the trek after seeing civil unrest and protests erupt across the country.“What is it we can do to make an impact, instead of just complaining about what’s going on,” Thompson said. “Talk to people in person and talk to them about how they have received kindness in their lives."The friends hope that by connecting with individuals from all walks of life and from all over the country, they can show there is much more that unites people than divides.“It’s touching one life at a time, one day at a time,” Chavez said. “We are opening up a space for this conversation about peace.”“There are good people in this country. This country is not as divided as some think it is,” Thompson said.Thompson and Chavez are walking about 20 miles per day. They expect to pass through Utah sometime in August.“Once we reach Salt Lake City we will do a day of kindness where we bring people together. (KGTV) -- In a document detailing devastation that could swarm California by 2100, the State of California Monday released its fourth climate change assessment.Some of the details divulged in the report include two-thirds of Southern California beaches the state says could completely disappear. And if that’s not enough, wildfires could nearly double in size by 2100, according to the California Natural Resources Agency.In a quote on the report, Governor Jerry Brown took a swipe at President Trump saying, “In California, facts and science still matter,” seemingly referring to the Trump administration’s stance on environmental issues. Brown went on to label the finding an “apocalyptic threat” in a dramatic response to the assessment.The report isn’t all doom and gloom, however, and offers a glimmer of hope as to how the state hopes to respond to the threat.Since the release of the third climate change assessment in 2012, the Golden State has experienced several history-making natural events, which include a five-year drought, flooding and increasingly-destructive wildfires.The report suggests that the extreme events will only continue to worsen in the future. 1201

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Trump administration said Thursday that it ended special considerations to generally release pregnant women charged with being in the United States illegally while their cases wind through immigration court.U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it scrapped a policy that took effect in August 2016 that pregnant women should be released unless they met limited criteria that required them to be held by law, such as serious criminal histories, or if there were "extraordinary circumstances."The new policy, which took effect in December but wasn't announced until Thursday, gives no blanket special consideration to pregnancy, though the agency says each case will be reviewed individually and women in their third trimester will generally be released.The move is the latest effort to scrap immigration policies created in the final two years of Barack Obama's administration. Shortly after Trump took office, rules that generally limited deportations to convicted criminals, public safety threats and recent border crossers were lifted, making anyone in the country illegally vulnerable. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A blaze broke out Tuesday morning at an unoccupied Mira Mesa house being used as a preschool and caused an estimated 0,000 in damage, authorities said.The fire was reported shortly after 2:15 a.m. at a single-story on Gold Coast Drive near Westonhill Drive, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Crews responded to the scene and found flames fueled by a gas line on the outside of the home, the agency reported.The flames spread to the garage, attic and portions of the house before firefighters knocked down the flames within 45 minutes, fire officials said. No injuries were reported and the flames did not spread to any nearby homes.Video from the scene showed firefighters cutting their way into a garage to access the house. SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three Camp Pendleton Marines were stabbed during a fight Saturday in San Clemente, a sheriff’s official confirms.The fight happened around 1 a.m. Saturday in a parking lot on the 200 block of El Camino Real.The three Marines, two aged 21 and the other a 23-year-old were involved in a fight with two men and a woman.RELATED: Woman finds Marine Corps ring on Florida's Siesta Key, hopes to find ownerDuring the fight, one of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed all three Marines.
